It includes stories written by World War II, Cold War, Vietnam War, War on Terror, and women veterans. The stories range from tragic to frivolous, from exciting to everyday. They depict life and death in the military and provide insight into the experiences of our nation's service members and veterans. Many Americans don't know anyone om active duty, much less have first-hand knowledge of the sacrifices made on their behalf. This is your opportunity to obtain insight into the lives of armed forces personnel. You will be moved and enlightened by their stories. What's more, all the proceeds from sales of this book will be used to subsidize donation of copies of Stories That Must Be Told to military and Veterans Administration hospitals, the USO, veterans' homes, and other veterans-oriented organizations.

Book excerpt: Veterans: Stories From America's Best captures the voices of the men and women sent to war in far-off lands during America's wars of the last century. Many kept their experiences, whether brutal, humane, or comedic, under tight wraps. Pete Mecca has sought out these veterans and, in giving them an opportunity to tell their stories, shows their wartime experiences to be powerful and poignant. Their voices speak loud and clear as they tell their stories in this stark and moving book. -- Greg Grimes COL, USA (R) Grand Prize Winner, MOAA National Military Writing Contest

As the late author Susan Sontag said, "Everything rememberd is ... touching, precious." Precious, and in this case, holding a mirror up to the challenges of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, and the return to civilian life. Most of these vets have returned to Sun City-Hilton Head, South Carolina, where author Arnold Rosen, who served in Korea, also lives. He delves into these individual histories with perspective and a knowing personal touch."--back cover.

Book excerpt: The Salt Lake City Tribune has called Lee Barnes “one of the finest writers of short stories in the contemporary West.” Minimal Damage contains seven stories and a novella that depict veterans of several wars in search of dignity and purpose in a civilian life that has no need for men who were soldiers. With emotion, humor, and clarity, Barnes creates characters who show us what it is to live with the trauma of having experienced combat. The fractured souls and twisted lives of these men remind us that war’s ultimate damage extends far beyond the battlefield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the conclusion of World War II, Americans anxiously contemplated the return to peace. It was an uncertain time, filled with concerns about demobilization, inflation, strikes, and the return of a second Great Depression. Balanced against these challenges was the hope in a future of unparalleled opportunities for a generation raised in hard times and war. One of the remarkable untold stories of postwar America is the successful assimilation of sixteen million veterans back into civilian society after 1945. The G.I. generation returned home filled with the same sense of fear and hope as most citizens at the time. Their transition from conflict to normalcy is one of the greatest chapters in American history. "The Greatest Generation Comes Home" combines military and social history into a comprehensive narrative of the veteran's experience after World War II. It integrates early impressions of home in 1945 with later stories of medical recovery, education, work, politics, and entertainment, as well as moving accounts of the dislocation, alienation, and discomfort many faced. The book includes the experiences of not only the millions of veterans drawn from mainstream white America, but also the women, African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans who served the nation. Perhaps most important, the book also examines the legacy bequeathed by these veterans to later generations who served in uniform on new battlefields around the world.

Included are Military Heroes of Guadalupe County; Military Heroes of Guadalupe County, Book II; and Military Heroes of Puerto de Luna. Military Heroes of Guadalupe County, Book III is intended to be representative of the men and women who served their country in time of war. Most of the stories in Book III have been culled from old newspaper archives of the now defunct Santa Rosa News as well as several other New Mexico newspapers. The book is composed of four sections---an Honor Roll, 57 who served in World War II, 6 from the Korean War, and 21 from the Vietnam War. The final section is News about the War. Most of the men and women who are included in Book III were not included in any of the three earlier editions. However, there are several who were in earlier editions that are included with additional new information about their service. There are not any soldiers from World War I in Book III. The Honor Roll is a composite of soldiers from World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam who were killed in action, earned medals for their bravery, received the Purple Heart, or were listed as missing in action. The Honor Roll includes the names of 39 soldiers who made the Supreme Sacrifice. There are also 92 Purple Heart recipients.

Book excerpt: The Veteran Next Door is a compilation of stories from the Nationally broadcast radio show of the same name. The stories are from survivors of World War II. From a Jewish girl being given away at age 2 to save her from Auschwitz, fighting in Bougainville, and Guadalcanal, the experience of being black in our army and navy during this time period. From love stories to fighting across Europe and even being captured on the first day of the Battle of the Bulge, seeing the new German jets shoot down the B-17 flying in front of your own Flying Fortress, earning as many medals as Audie Murphy and not being awarded the Medal of Honor, and being surrounded by sharks for 5 days, being on board a ship that is breaking in half in a typhoon. And coming home to a small Tennessee county that has been taken over by a corrupt political machine. All true stories about our Veterans of World War II, their heartbreaks, and their accomplishments told by the Veterans themselves.

Book excerpt: For twenty four years I've brought American veterans from all over the United States to high schools in Oregon to share their military experiences during times of war with the students. Over the years, as I became friends with many of these veterans, they began to open up and share with me. Many veterans refused to talk for years but reached out to me as they become older as they wanted their stories remembered. Even their spouses and children had never heard many of these shared stories. This book is also unique as it includes chapters from American veterans of many races, all of whom have served their country with great pride. We must not forget all of these men's and women's stories, lest we forget the cost they gave for our freedom.

Book excerpt: Our American Heroes: The Stories behind the Fight for Freedom and DemocracyThis book is not about the author. This book is not about the battle. This book is about military members who are now veterans. Their memories are about some of the most legendary battles as well as their own private struggles. The recollections of these veterans cover an array of experiences around the world—one of the first female pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps; a survivor of the Bataan Death March; POWs from WWII and Korea; an Ohio National Guardsman at Kent State; survivors, fighters, and patriots from Pearl Harbor, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Their families share their heroic stories of service to the world's freedom, as well as their frustration and disappointment with the VA bureaucracy or lack of information-sharing practices about their entitled benefits. The efforts of caregivers in enabling their veterans to have the best quality of life possible—spouses, mothers, children, guardians/fiduciaries, healthcare professionals, and the grandmother who had both her son and granddaughter deployed—speak volumes of their commitment and unconditional sacrifices. This collection of their stories is the author's continued privilege of serving the veterans who have enabled this great nation to stand guard in the world and assure the right to be free. Read on with respect and compassion.
