The reintegration period can be a challenging experience, and affects things such as mental health and overall adjustment to civilian life. In order to examine reintegration more closely, interviews conducted by the Wright State's Veterans Voices Project were used to complete this study. A checklist was used and consisted of nine themes identified in the relative literature related to reintegration: intimate relationships, familial relationships, children, education, employment, physical health, mental health, coping, and identity. Of the nine categories, employment was discussed most often (59.5%). Mental health was only discussed in 19% of the interviews, but very vivid details were shared in the interviews. The results support the idea that veteran reintegration can be difficult for some veterans and their families, and is a matter that needs support from multiple sectors. Communities should be made aware of the struggles that veterans may face in order to provide the appropriate resources and opportunities for veterans to make a successful transition.

There are a significant number of government and nonprofit organizations that help veterans reintegrate into society. Asking professionals at these veteran nonprofit organizations who specialize in serving this population will determine what factors attribute to successes and failures in making the change from soldier to civilian. Surveying organizations allows for research beyond the literature for critical variables that assist veteran reintegration into civilian life. This study does not attempt to be an extensive list of all programs offered through nonprofits, but instead it seeks to determine key strengths by interviewing professionals that serve thousands of veterans throughout the State of Texas and asking those professionals what services, personal characteristics or other assets they have found to be beneficial for their clients during reintegration. A content analysis of these interviews suggests a consensus among the respondents about what assets can be focused upon to increase the likelihood of successful reintegration for the future. Respondents believed that there are client and program factors that limit success. The most common program limitations are lack of funding, a veteran mindset warrior ethos, and lack of marketing while the most common veteran limitations are veterans' attitudes and veterans' support systems. The literature on this subject goes back about thirteen years and this study confirms that veterans are still facing the same issues.

Scars and Stripes Coffee (SSC) is a company on a unique mission to empower veterans to start their own e-commerce business. The author is driven by the belief that this company’s purpose is much bigger than selling a bag of coffee. The companies purpose stems from my belief that veterans have substantial reintegration needs which our society is not meeting. Our young veterans are returning with images and voices that never leave their heads. This is caused by a unique combat zone experiences where the enemy is at times unknown. Like veterans from other wars, they return from war, but the war never leaves them. They find themselves to be strangers in their own country even in a room full of familiar faces. Based on the authors literature review, the common theme surrounding the veteran reintegration dilemma is emotional or physical trauma. In addition, a lack of formal education, sense of purpose and understanding their new mission in life leads to anger and confusion. The veteran reports of having difficulty applying their military skills to a civilian job or business culture. Reported levels of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are increasing. I feel that is being caused by the lack of understanding from the veteran on how to navigate in an individualistic society versus a military community-based environment. As a veteran only business model, SSC is employing a novel approach to develop a successful company. The mission is to continue to build a for-profit company that will be sustainable through the sale of coffee. The military structure is what makes the company scalable because each member can continue to increase in rank. SSC will be built through a known military rank structure starting with the basic Team member to Squad Leader to Platoon Sergeant then on to 1ST Sergeant. With this structure, the company will be able to build communities of veterans with a common mission, purpose, team and accountability. Eventually, there will be an SSC team to join in every town in America. SSC will reignite the camaraderie that makes the U.S. Military so successful and adapt that type of culture into a civilian based company. In turn, veteran “transition coaches” will be developed throughout the members joining the company to training and advance other veterans through the rank structure. This will create a team environment so that the joining veteran has a group of other veterans to help them navigate the reintegration process. In addition, an empirically designed study will be discussed to test the efficacy of this model."--Abstract.

There is no established "one size fits all" reintegration procedure, and the Department of Veterans Affairs is not equipped to manage the needs of every military veteran. Drama therapy has been used with various populations, including trauma survivors, incorporating emotional expression and group interaction in a non-threatening environment. This study utilized a specific application of drama therapy techniques and implemented an anonymous self-report survey to demonstrate the potential benefits received through the application of drama therapy while comparing civilian and veteran groups. The results found no significant difference between civilians and veterans regarding identified benefits of a drama therapy intervention, and the participants identified both intrapersonal and interpersonal benefits from their participation in the drama program. This study emphasized the multi-dimensional challenge of reintegration and presented a multi-dimensional treatment modality in the form of drama therapy.

Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.
