Book Synopsis Almost Dead by : Michael Lawrence Dickinson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the late seventeenth century and concluding with the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade, Almost Dead reveals how the thousands of captives who lived, bled, and resisted in the Black Urban Atlantic survived to form dynamic communities. Michael Lawrence Dickinson uses cities with close commercial ties to shed light on similarities, variations, and linkages between urban Atlantic slave communities in mainland America and the Caribbean. The study adopts the perspectives of those enslaved to reveal that, in the eyes of the enslaved, the distinctions were often of degree rather than kind as cities throughout the Black Urban Atlantic remained spaces for Black oppression and resilience. The tenets of subjugation remained all too similar, as did captives’ need to stave off social death and hold on to their humanity. Almost Dead argues that urban environments provided unique barriers to and avenues for social rebirth: the process by which African-descended peoples reconstructed their lives individually and collectively after forced exportation from West Africa. This was an active process of cultural remembrance, continued resistance, and communal survival. It was in these urban slave communities—within the connections between neighbors and kinfolk—that the enslaved found the physical and psychological resources necessary to endure the seemingly unendurable. Whether sites of first arrival, commodification, sale, short-term captivity, or lifetime enslavement, the urban Atlantic shaped and was shaped by Black lives.

Book excerpt: In an atmospheric, chilling novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jackson, a string of murders points to a terrifying secret within a wealthy San Francisco family... Shock and grief play tricks on the mind. Cissy Cahill has been telling herself that a lot lately. Even if Cissy wasn’t particularly close to her grandmother, Eugenia Cahill’s sudden death was bound to take a toll. That would explain the footsteps Cissy hears when there’s no one around, the scent of another woman’s perfume, the unnerving shadows outside her son’s bedroom window. She doesn’t want to panic—or give her estranged husband, Jack, more reason to try and move back in. After all, why would anyone choose to target her? For generations, the Cahills have been one of San Francisco’s most affluent families, with a splendid manor perched high above the Bay. Money like theirs offers not just privilege, but protection. Yet something has changed. One by one, Cahills are dying in brutal ways. Uncertain who to trust, Cissy is desperate to keep her young son safe. And the only way is to delve into her family’s past and uncover the twisted truth...before a killer finds them.

Download or read book The Doll written by Boleslaw Prus and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bołeslaw Prus is often compared to Chekhov, and Prus’s masterpiece might be described as an intimate epic, a beautifully detailed, utterly absorbing exploration of life in late-nineteenth-century Warsaw, which is also a prophetic reckoning with some of the social forces—imperialism, nationalism, anti-Semitism among them—that would soon convulse Europe as never before. But The Doll is above all a brilliant novel of character, dramatizing conflicting ideas through the various convictions, ambitions, confusions, and frustrations of an extensive and varied cast. At the center of the book are three men from three different generations. Prus’s fatally flawed hero is Wokulski, a successful businessman who yearns for recognition from Poland’s decadent aristocracy and falls desperately in love with the highborn, glacially beautiful Izabela. Wokulski’s story is intertwined with those of the incorrigibly romantic old clerk Rzecki, nostalgic for the revolutions of 1848, and of the bright young scientist Ochocki, who dreams of a future full of flying machines and other marvels, making for a book of great scope and richness that is, as Stanisław Barańczak writes in his introduction, at once “an old-fashioned yet still fascinating love story . . . , a still topical diagnosis of society’s ills, and a forceful yet subtle portrayal of a tragically doomed man."

Download or read book Dance of the Years written by Margery Allingham and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published as The Galantrys in America, Dance of the Years is one of Margery Allingham's oft overlooked novels. Originally published in 1943, it is a fictionalised account of Allingham's family heritage, which she insisted as the closest records of the facts. First published in 1943, Dance of the Years centres on the birth and growth of James, the fictional representative of Margery's great-grandfather who was 'born in 1800 and left ten thousand pounds and the injunction that no gentleman ever works'. The offspring of a Georgian country gentleman and a gypsy, James becomes an early-Victorian success, devoting his riches to becoming a gentleman and establishing a family name. A fascinating exploration of family ties and values by a famous author of detective crime fiction, this title will appeal to a wide range of readers.
