Book Synopsis Physics of Binary Star Evolution by : Thomas M Tauris
Download or read book Physics of Binary Star Evolution written by Thomas M Tauris and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A graduate-level textbook on the astrophysics of binary star systems and their evolution Physics of Binary Star Evolution is an up-to-date textbook on the astrophysics and evolution of binary star systems. Theoretical astrophysicists Thomas Tauris and Edward van den Heuvel cover a wide range of phenomena and processes, including mass transfer and ejection, common envelopes, novae and supernovae, X-ray binaries, millisecond radio pulsars, and gravitational wave (GW) sources, and their links to stellar evolution. The authors walk through the observed properties and evolution of different types of binaries, with special emphasis on those containing compact objects (neutron stars, black holes, and white dwarfs). Attention is given to the formation mechanisms of GW sources—merging double neutron stars and black holes as well as ultra-compact GW binaries hosting white dwarfs—and to the progenitors of these sources and how they are observed with radio telescopes, X-ray satellites, and GW detectors (LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA, Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer, and LISA). Supported by illustrations, equations, and exercises, Physics of Binary Star Evolution combines theory and observations to guide readers through the wonders of a field that will play a central role in modern astrophysics for decades to come. 465 equations, 47 tables, and 350+ figures More than 80 exercises (analytical, numerical, and computational) Over 2,500 extensive, up-to-date references

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the gap between physics and astronomy textbooks, this book provides step-by-step physical and mathematical development of fundamental astrophysical processes underlying a wide range of phenomena in stellar, galactic, and extragalactic astronomy. The book has been written for upper-level undergraduates and beginning graduate students, and its strong pedagogy ensures solid mastery of each process and application. It contains over 150 tutorial figures, numerous examples of astronomical measurements, and 201 exercises. Topics covered include the Kepler–Newton problem, stellar structure, binary evolution, radiation processes, special relativity in astronomy, radio propagation in the interstellar medium, and gravitational lensing. Applications presented include Jeans length, Eddington luminosity, the cooling of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect, Doppler boosting in jets, and determinations of the Hubble constant. This text is a stepping stone to more specialized books and primary literature. Password-protected solutions to the exercises are available to instructors at www.cambridge.org/9780521846561.

Book Synopsis Circumstellar Matter 1994 by : Graeme D. Watt
Download or read book Circumstellar Matter 1994 written by Graeme D. Watt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference recorded in this volume was one of the events organised to celebrate the centenary of the (re)establishment of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, on Blackford Hill in 1884. Circumstellar Matter was selected as the topic because of important contributions toward research in the field by recent observations in the infrared and submillimetre, particularly with the two telescopes which the Observatory has both operated and built instru mentation for - the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The programme aimed to cover as many aspects of circumstellar matter as could fit into a one-week meeting, omitting only planetary nebulae, which had been well served by meetings in the previous two years. We thank the international scientific advisory com mittee (overleaf) for their help in selecting the Invited Reviewers around which the programme was built. The Invited Reviews and oral contributions are included in the order and sections in which they were presented, even where re-ordering might have been more logical. We did not attempt to categorise the poster contributions but have included them in alphabetical order. An evening session for viewing and discussing posters in an unhurried atmosphere was very successful. A competition for the best poster was held and the prize was awarded for that by Lindqvist, Lucas, Olofsson, Omont, Eriksson & Gustafsson.

Book Synopsis Fundamental Stellar Properties: The Interaction Between Observation and Theory by : Timothy R. Bedding
Download or read book Fundamental Stellar Properties: The Interaction Between Observation and Theory written by Timothy R. Bedding and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Symposium began with a proposal for a meeting to honour Emer itus Professor Robert Hanbury Brown on the occasion of his 80th birthday. He requested that any such meeting should be on a topic that would be of benefit to the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI) program. With SUSI and several other high angular resolution instruments either in operation or coming on line within the next decade, and with advances in astrometry, spectroscopy and in theoretical models of stellar atmospheres and interiors, it appeared to be both appropriate and timely to hold a symposium on "Fundamental Stellar Properties: the Interaction between Observation and Theory. " The emphasis of the meeting was on the critical assessment of the qual ity, accuracy, and prospects for improvement of the observational data and theoretical models, on the outstanding problems in stellar astrophysics, and on the feasibility of achieving the observational and theoretical advances required for their solution. Invited papers comprised the major part of the oral program and the speakers responded to the challenge issued by the Scientific Organising Committee to critically review the current status and prospects for their area of expertise. The Symposium was opened by the Chancellor of the University of Sydney, Emeritus Professor Dame Leonie Kramer, who welcomed the 126 participants from 22 countries on behalf of the University. The oral program included . 52 invited reviews and papers and 10 contributed papers.
