Book excerpt: This work deals with the vertical mode of vibration of a rigid circular footing resting on a plane soil surface and excited by a vertical time-dependent force in the axis of symmetry. It is assumed that the subsoil can be considered as a perfectly elastic, isotropic, and homogeneous half space. First an approximate theoretical solution is developed for the steadystate motion of the above half-space model. This solution differs from previously published solutions in that it includes all frequencies of excitation. It is then shown how the transient response due to a pulse-type loading can be calculated from the steady-state solution by a simple Fourier technique, and a computer program using this technique is presented. Parallel with the above development it is shown that the elastic half-space model behaves very similarly to a simple damped oscillator, and the author proposes the use of a simplified analog of the mass-spring-dashpot type for practical calculations. The above theoretical results are supported by the presentation of both steady-state and impact tests performed by other researchers. (Author).

Book excerpt: This text collects the papers 'Vertical Vibration of Rigid Bodies on Deep Elastic Strata' and 'A Stoneley-Gibson-Varga Elastic Stratum' that have been published in the journal Heron (2001)). The first chapter offers a survey of the vertical motion of rigid bodies resting on deep elastic strata. Four types of footings are considered: the strip, the circular disk and the embedded semi-cylinder and hemi-sphere. In particular attention has been given to the distinction between compressible and incompressible strata, and to the distinction between low and high frequency factors of the oscillatory motion. The second chapter provides a geometrically non-linear generalization of the Gibson soil. Some remarkable solutions concerning excavations and indented rigid punches are presented.

Book excerpt: Although realistic soil and rock foundations reveal noticeable deviations in their properties from homogeneity and isotropy, the model of the homogeneous isotropie elastic half-space is widely used when studying static and dynamie interactions between a defonnable foundation and structures. This is explained by significant mathematieal difficulties inherent in problems conceming mechanies of anisotropie and heterogeneous elastic bodies. Solving the basic static and dynamie problems for heterogeneous and anisotropic half-spaces, such as different contact problems and problems of constructing Green's functions, has become possible in the last few decades due to the development of computer engineering techniques and numerical methods. This book contains the results of investigations in the area of statics and dynamies of heterogeneous and anisotropic foundations, carried out by the author in the last five years while working in the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. The book is directed at engineers and scientists in the areas of soil mechanics, soil-structures interaction, seismology and geophysics. Some characteristic features of the book are: i) Constructing (Chap.l) solutions in a general fonn for the heterogeneous (in the depth direction) transversely isotropic elastic half-space subjected to different loadings, hannonic in time. Characteristics of the given half-space have an influence on functions (of depth z and parameter k of Hankel's transfonns), which are detennined from a system of ordinary differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamical Systems: Discontinuous, Stochasticity and Time-Delay provides an overview of the most recent developments in nonlinear dynamics, vibration and control. This book focuses on the most recent advances in all three areas, with particular emphasis on recent analytical, numerical and experimental research and its results. Real dynamical system problems, such as the behavior of suspension systems of railways, nonlinear vibration and applied control in coal manufacturing, along with the multifractal spectrum of LAN traffic, are discussed at length, giving the reader a sense of real-world instances where these theories are applied. Dynamical Systems: Discontinuous, Stochasticity and Time-Delay also contains material on time-delay systems as they relate to linear switching, dynamics of complex networks, and machine tools with multiple boundaries. It is the ideal book for engineers and academic researchers working in areas like mechanical and control engineering, as well as applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of June 1993 international symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia, called specifically to develop and standardized evaluation procedures for non-destructive methods of testing pavements. The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. Also includes a history of the quest for a standard and the status of that effort. Reproduced from typescripts. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this series dealt with the Basic Principles of Boundary Elements, while the second concentrated on time dependent problems and Volume three on the Computational Aspects of the method. This volume studies the applications of the method to a wide variety of geomechanics problems, most of which are ideally suited for boundary elements demonstrating the potentiality of the technique. Chapter 1 deals with the application of BEM to three dimensional elastody namics soil-structure interaction problems. It presents detailed formulations for rigid, massless foundations of arbitrary shape both in the frequency and time domains. The foundations are assumed to be resting on a linearly elastic, homogeneous, isotropic half-space and be subjected to externally applied loads on obliquely incident body. The chapter reviews the major advances in soil foundation interaction presents a series of numerical results and stresses the practical application of BEM, pointing out the high accuracy and efficiency of the technique, even when using coarse mesh discretizations.
