Book excerpt: This work deals with the vertical mode of vibration of a rigid circular footing resting on a plane soil surface and excited by a vertical time-dependent force in the axis of symmetry. It is assumed that the subsoil can be considered as a perfectly elastic, isotropic, and homogeneous half space. First an approximate theoretical solution is developed for the steadystate motion of the above half-space model. This solution differs from previously published solutions in that it includes all frequencies of excitation. It is then shown how the transient response due to a pulse-type loading can be calculated from the steady-state solution by a simple Fourier technique, and a computer program using this technique is presented. Parallel with the above development it is shown that the elastic half-space model behaves very similarly to a simple damped oscillator, and the author proposes the use of a simplified analog of the mass-spring-dashpot type for practical calculations. The above theoretical results are supported by the presentation of both steady-state and impact tests performed by other researchers. (Author).

The first chapter offers a survey of the vertical motion of rigid bodies resting on deep elastic strata. Four types of footings are considered: the strip, the circular disk and the embedded semi-cylinder and hemi-sphere. In particular attention has been given to the distinction between compressible and incompressible strata, and to the distinction between low and high frequency factors of the oscillatory motion. The second chapter provides a geometrically non-linear generalization of the Gibson soil. Some remarkable solutions concerning excavations and indented rigid punches are presented.

The book is directed at engineers and scientists in the areas of soil mechanics, soil-structures interaction, seismology and geophysics. Some characteristic features of the book are: i) Constructing (Chap.l) solutions in a general fonn for the heterogeneous (in the depth direction) transversely isotropic elastic half-space subjected to different loadings, hannonic in time. Characteristics of the given half-space have an influence on functions (of depth z and parameter k of Hankel's transfonns), which are detennined from a system of ordinary differential equations.

Chapter 1 deals with the application of BEM to three dimensional elastody namics soil-structure interaction problems. The foundations are assumed to be resting on a linearly elastic, homogeneous, isotropic half-space and be subjected to externally applied loads on obliquely incident body. The chapter reviews the major advances in soil foundation interaction presents a series of numerical results and stresses the practical application of BEM, pointing out the high accuracy and efficiency of the technique, even when using coarse mesh discretizations.
