Book excerpt: Six of the most remarkable contemporary Russian poets present their groundbreaking verse in a bilingual poetry collection published in partnership with PEN America's Writers in Dialogue project. In 2020, as international travel skidded to a halt, PEN America's Writers in Dialogue project--which opens the exhilarating world of contemporary Russian poetry to American readers by bridging the American and Russian literary communities--went remote, using online connection to foster collaborations between daring emerging or undertranslated poetic voices and dexterous translators. In this remarkable volume, the Russian poets and American translators who were paired for this initiative present their collaborative work in a bilingual format, along with conversations about the pleasures, challenges, and intimacies of translation. English-reading audiences will have an opportunity to experience the boldness and range, stylistic and thematic, of Russia's vital poetry scene. Featuring Ainsley Morse, Maria Galina, Catherine Ciepiela, Aleksandra Tsibulia, Anna Halberstadt, Oksana Vasyakina, Elina Alter, Ivan Sokolov, Kevin M.F. Platt, Ekaterina Simonova, Valeriya Yermishova, and Nikita Sungatov.
Download or read book The Triads written by J. M. S. Ward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. Claiming origins in the mysteries of the Shaolin monastery and its martial traditions, the Triads are Chinese secret societies that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, evolved into organised crime syndicates, spread through the Chinese diaspora and are more powerful now than ever before. The symbol of the Triads is a triangle enclosing the characters for heaven, earth and man, emblematic of the societies’ far-reaching influence, and membership involves challenging rites of initiation and the practice of complex rituals little changed over the centuries. On one level, these practices can be seen simply as the customs of a purely mystical order; on another, they may be seen as the organising principles by which secret societies continue to operate as powerful political organisations invisible in our midst. This classic work, the definitive study of the history, symbols and secret rituals of the Triads, reveals the Triad initiation ritual of the mystical journey; sacred Triad signs, words and slang; the rite of the magic mirror and the oath of blood brotherhood; the symbolic decoration of Triad temples, Triad magic, and the meaning of the sacred objects and ceremonies at the heart of Triad practice in minute detail. The authors show that the Triad ritual is a potent mystical allegory with an immense power that can be used for good or ill.
Book Synopsis Boleslaw Lesmian by : Rochelle Heller Stone
Download or read book Boleslaw Lesmian written by Rochelle Heller Stone and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boleslaw Lesmian (1877–1937), the outstanding Polish poet of the twentieth century, occupies a unique place in world literature. A bilingual poet, he was an inventor of myth-rooted poetic language, a creator of prose genres, a formidable theoretical and literary critic, and a forerunner of present-day Polish poetry and of the theater of the absurd. Rochelle Stone’s study acquaints the English-speaking reader with Lesmian’s life and the magic of his work. Her translations of the quoted poems—rendered into English for the first time—reveal his innovative attitude toward language, the concreteness of his imagery, and his fantasticism. Her critical analysis of his poetics in the literary, historical, and philosophical context of his time shows him to be the most consistent Symbolist in Poland, and one whose esthetics correspond much more closely to those of the second generation of Russian Symbolists than to those of his own contemporary Polish scene. The author’s examination of the three evolutionary stages of Lesmian’s mythogenic poetry against the background of his philosophical, critical, and theoretical works demonstrates the unique fact of the convergence between his theory and poetry. She shows that the irrational and haphazard elements in Lesmian’s poetry were in fact intentionally, rationally, and consistently orchestrated to reflect the poet’s philosophical, esthetic, and social concepts about humanity’s predicament in an illusory world. Rochelle Stone’s wide-ranging study offers a vivid illumination of a poet who has had an undeniable impact on the exuberantly developing poetry of the post-1956 years. Book Synopsis Postwar Polish Poetry by : Czeslaw Milosz
Download or read book Postwar Polish Poetry written by Czeslaw Milosz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1983-07-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This expanded edition of Postwar Polish Poetry (which was originally published in 1965) presents 125 poems by 25 poets, including Czeslaw Milosz and other Polish poets living outside Poland. The stress of the anthology is on poetry written after 1956, the year when the lifting of censorship and the berakdown of doctrines provoked and explosion of new schools and talents. The victory of Solidarity in August 1980 once again opened new vistas for a short time; the coup of December closed that chapter. It is too early yet to predict the impact these events will have on the future of Polish poetry." From Amazon.

Download or read book Fossil Poetry written by Chris Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil Poetry provides the first book-length overview of the place of Anglo-Saxon in nineteenth-century poetry in English. It addresses the use and role of Anglo-Saxon as a resource by Romantic and Victorian poets in their own compositions, as well as the construction and 'invention' of Anglo-Saxon in and by nineteenth-century poetry. Fossil Poetry takes its title from a famous passage on 'early' language in the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and uses the metaphor of the fossil to contextualize poetic Anglo-Saxonism within the developments that had been taking place in the fields of geology, palaeontology, and the evolutionary life sciences since James Hutton's apprehension of 'deep time' in his 1788 Theory of the Earth. Fossil Poetry argues that two, roughly consecutive phases of poetic Anglo-Saxonism took place over the course of the nineteenth century: firstly, a phase of 'constant roots' whereby Anglo-Saxon is constructed to resemble, and so to legitimize a tradition of English Romanticism conceived as essential and unchanging; secondly, a phase in which the strangeness of many of the 'extinct' philological forms of early English is acknowledged, and becomes concurrent with a desire to recover and recuperate the fossils of Anglo-Saxon within contemporary English poetry. The volume advances new readings of work by a variety of poets including Walter Scott, Henry Longfellow, William Wordsworth, William Barnes, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Morris, Alfred Tennyson, and Gerard Hopkins.

Book Synopsis Spanish Poetry of the Twentieth Century by : Andrew Debicki
Download or read book Spanish Poetry of the Twentieth Century written by Andrew Debicki and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twentieth-century Spanish poetry has received comparatively little attention from critics writing in English. Andrew Debicki now presents the first English-language history published in the United States to examine the sweep of modern Spanish verse. More important, he is the first to situate Spanish poetry in the context of European modernity, to trace its trajectory from the symbolists to the postmodernists. Avoiding the rigid generational schemes and catalogs of names found in traditional Hispanic literary histories, Debicki offers detailed discussions of salient books and texts to construct an original and compelling view of his subject. He demonstrates that contemporary Spanish verse is rooted in the modem tradition and poetics that see the text as a unique embodiment of complex experiences. He then traces the evolution of that tradition in the early decades of the century and its gradual disintegration from the 1950s to the present as Spanish poetry came to reflect features of the postmodern, especially the poetics of text as process rather than as product. By centering his study on major periods and examining within each the work of poets of different ages, Debicki develops novel perspectives. The late 1960s and early 1970s, for example, were not merely the setting for a new aestheticist generation but an era of exceptional creativity in which both established and new writers engendered a profound, intertextual, and often self-referential lyricism. This book will be essential reading for specialists in modern Spanish letters, for advanced students, and for readers inter-ested in comparative literature.
