This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While quill and ink were the writing implements of choice in the Anglo-Saxon scriptorium, other colouring and non-colouring writing implements were in active use, too. The stylus, among them, was used on an everyday basis both for taking notes in wax tablets and for several vital steps in the creation of manuscripts. Occasionally, the stylus or perhaps even small knives were used for writing short notes that were scratched in the parchment surface without ink. One particular type of such notes encountered in manuscripts are dry-point glosses, i.e. short explanatory remarks that provide a translation or a clue for a lexical or syntactic difficulty of the Latin text. The present study provides a comprehensive overview of the known corpus of dry-point glosses in Old English by cataloguing the 34 manuscripts that are currently known to contain such glosses. A first general descriptive analysis of the corpus of Old English dry-point glosses is provided and their difficult visual appearance is discussed with respect to the theoretical and practical implications for their future study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of six articles, each treating an important topic in the theory ofthe Navier-Stokes equations, at the research level. Some of the articles are mainly expository, putting together, in a unified setting, the results of recent research papers and conference lectures. Several other articles are devoted mainly to new results, but present them within a wider context and with a fuller exposition than is usual for journals. The plan to publish these articles as a book began with the lecture notes for the short courses of G.P. Galdi and R. Rannacher, given at the beginning of the International Workshop on Theoretical and Numerical Fluid Dynamics, held in Vancouver, Canada, July 27 to August 2, 1996. A renewed energy for this project came with the founding of the Journal of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics, by G.P. Galdi, J. Heywood, and R. Rannacher, in 1998. At that time it was decided that this volume should be published in association with the journal, and expanded to include articles by J. Heywood and W. Nagata, J. Heywood and M. Padula, and P. Gervasio, A. Quarteroni and F. Saleri. The original lecture notes were also revised and updated.

Book excerpt: This book is the proceeding of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) held in July 2018 in Shanghai, China. It consists of original papers, surveys and expository articles in the broad areas of operator theory, operator algebras and noncommutative topology. Its goal is to give graduate students and researchers a relatively comprehensive overview of the current status of research in the relevant fields. The book is also a special volume dedicated to the memory of Ronald G. Douglas who passed away on February 27, 2018 at the age of 79. Many of the contributors are Douglas’ students and past collaborators. Their articles attest and commemorate his life-long contribution and influence to these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, the authors propose a method for the formal development of parallel programs - or multiprograms as they prefer to call them. They accomplish this with a minimum of formal gear, i.e. with the predicate calculus and the well- established theory of Owicki and Gries. They show that the Owicki/Gries theory can be effectively put to work for the formal development of multiprograms, regardless of whether these algorithms are distributed or not.

Book excerpt: This e-book package contains a copy of International Medical Guide for Ships Third edition and a copy of the Quantification Addendum which contains recommended quantities indications and dosing for 55 medicines listed in the International Medical Guide for Ships 3rd edition. The third edition of the International Medical Guide for Ships shows designated first-aid providers how to diagnose treat and prevent the health problems of seafarers on board ship. Since its first publication in 1967 the International Medical Guide for Ships has been a standard reference for medical care on board ships. The second edition written in 1988 was translated into more than 30 languages and has been used in tens of thousands of ships. This the third edition contains fully updated recommendations aimed to promote and protect the health of seafarers and is consistent with the latest revisions of both the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines and the International Health Regulations. The International Labour Organization's Maritime Labour Convention 2006 stipulates that all ships shall carry a medicine chest medical equipment and a medical guide. The International Medical Guide for Ships supports a main principal of that convention; to ensure that seafarers are given health protection and medical care as comparable as possible to that which is generally available to workers ashore. By carrying this guide on board ships and following its instructions countries can both fulfill their obligations under the terms of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 and ensure the best possible health outcomes for their seafaring population. The Quantification Addendum contains recommended quantities indications and dosing for 55 medicines listed in the International Medical Guide for Ships 3rd edition. The quantities are based on three types of ships: . ocean-going ships with crews of 25-40 and no doctor (Category A); . coastal ships with crews of up to 25 that travel no more than 24 hours from a port of call (Category B); and . small boats and private craft with crews of 15 or less and usually travelling no more than a few hours from a port of call (Category C). These quantities have been updated to reflect the decrease of crew numbers on most ships and calculated for voyages of one month. This companion volume to the International Medical Guide for Ships provides essential guidance to all those who involved in the procurement purchasing stock maintenance and use of medicines to promote and protect the health of seafarers worldwide.

This study developed in the course of preparing a collection of all the epigraphical evidence relating to the sanctuary of Demeter and Kore at Eleusis. The author soon realized that many problems connected with the priesthoods could be treated more conveniently in a separate study than in the commentaries on individual inscriptions. The proper scope of the separate study naturally appeared to be all Eleusinian priesthoods and sacred offices. The scheme he has adopted is a prosopographical account, in chronological order, of all the known incumbents of each priesthood, with an emphasis on certain aspects: qualifications for a priesthood, manner of selection, length of incumbency, official functions and duties, rank or importance relative to other priesthoods in the cult, social position, participation in civil life and in other festivals or cults, and religious dress. The evidence not connected with specific priests or priestesses has been interspersed chronologically among them; but there are occasional departures from this procedure where it was more useful to discuss in one place all the evidence on a given topic (e.g., religious dress). Book excerpt: Mycoplasma Diseases of Trees and Shrubs contains the edited papers presented at the Third Working Party meeting organized by Professor Karl Maramorosch at Rutgers University, New Jersey, in August 1979. This book also includes additional chapters by the invited contributors in the meeting. Organized into 15 chapters, this book begins with the isolation, characterization and identification of spiroplasmas and mycoplasma-like organisms. It then describes the various diseases of trees and shrubs, specifically yellows disease, stubborn disease, Paulownia witches' broom disease, mulberry dwarf, blueberry stunt, and sandal spike disease. It also elaborates the control of tree diseases by chemotherapy. This treatise will provide a standard reference work for all interested in plant mycoplasma diseases in forest pathology, entomology, and disease control.
