Book excerpt: From its first complete Italian printing in 1872 up to the present day, Domenico Comparetti's Vergil in the Middle Ages has been acknowledged as a masterpiece, regarded by some critics as "a true and proper history of European consciousness from antiquity to Dante." Treating Vergil's poetry as a foundation of Latin European identity, Comparetti seeks to give a complete history of the medieval conception of the preeminent poet. Scholars of the time had transformed Vergil into a sage and a seer, a type of universal philosopher--even a Christian poet and a guide of a Christian poet. In the mid-twelfth century, there surfaced legends that converted Vergil into a magician, endowing him with supernatural powers. Comparetti explores the ongoing interest in Vergil's poetry as it appeared in popular folklore and legends as well as in medieval classical scholarship. This great synthesizing work, which has been unavailable for over twenty years, is now back in print, based on E.F.M. Benecke's 1895 translation of the Italian second edition. Comparetti begins with the period in which Vergil lived and goes on to evaluate how the later images, particularly the legends, of Vergil coincide with the more scholarly accounts of his life. The result is a grand sweep of literary history from the first century B.C.E. through the end of the Middle Ages, with implications for the nineteenth century and the rise of Italian nationalism.

One need only look at the long notices under the word barbarug in the indices to the various volumes of the Seriptt. rer Germ. Vide also my note on p. 122. " The vast and complicated history of medieval Borne is an inspiring theme alike for the Christian and the freethinker. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vergil in the Middle Ages When, some years ago, Professor Comparetti was introduced to me at Oxford, his Vergil in the Middle Ages was already a world-famed book. I lost no time in asking his permission to have the work translated into our language. Put the various attempts I made to secure a competent translator were abortive, and the appearance meanwhile in America of Tnnison's corresponding (and highly interesting) volume The Author of the AEneid as he seemed in the Middle Ages made any immediate publication of the earlier and far greater work unnecessary. When at last, two years ago, Mr. Benecke volunteered to undertake the translation, I at once seized the opportunity thus presented, and urged him to lose no time in setting about the task. Mr. Benecke has accomplished it sooner than might have been expected; indeed, with an almost marvellous celerity. I venture to hope that English and American readers will both be grateful for this introduction to a work which immediately secured its author a permanent place in the ranks of European philologists, and which seems hardly likely to be superseded. Book excerpt: Brings together studies by scholars from a range of academic disciplines to assess the central position of Virgil in the intellectual, artistic, and political lives of the Renaissance. This collection of essays presents a variety of case studies of Virgils impact on different branches of Renaissance culture, covering the crucial areas of education and court culture, the visual arts, music history, philosophy, and Neo-Latin and vernacular literature. It brings together established scholars and younger researchers from a range of different academic disciplines. The studies included here will be of particular interest to students of Renaissance social, intellectual, and literary history, to art historians, and to those working on the reception of classical literature; some offer new perspectives on well-known material, while others investigate examples of Renaissance engagement with the Virgilian corpus which have received little or no previous attention. Building on recent scholarship on the Virgilian tradition, the collection opens up new avenues for research on the reception of both Virgil and other classical authors, and addresses questions of fundamental importance to historians of this period not least the perennial debate over the nature and definition of the Renaissance itself.
