Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vergennes and the American Independence: Vergennes and Wilson A hundred and forty years have elapsed since, on the 6th of February 1778, Louis XVI of his own deliberate will and that of his great minister of Foreign Affairs, comte de Vergennes, laid the foundations of an alliance between France and the United States, which liberated the new world. And now that to-day the book reopens at the page turned down of yore, and that history repeats itself, the same hopes arise. Such a coincidence must necessarily strike all thinkers; hence the manifestations celebrating the exploits of La Fayette, the generous ardour of Rochambeau's soldiers, the sailors of Amiral de Grasse, and of all those who came from all parts of the French provinces to shed their blood for the great cause of the Independence of the United States. Certainly it is right to evoke such noble reminiscences and the tribute rendered to these heroes can only strengthen the fraternal feeling that unites all French and American hearts. Book Synopsis Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes by : Orville T. Murphy
Download or read book Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes written by Orville T. Murphy and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1983-06-30 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete study of Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes, one of the most distinguished diplomats and statesmen of eighteenth-century France. Vergennes represented France as a diplomat in Germany, Constantinople, and Stockholm, and was Louis XVI's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Orville Murphy traces Vergennes' career as he steadily rose from the provincial nobility of the robe to the ranks of the court aristocracy; from the post of an obscure diplomat to the lofty position of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Murphy, however, has written much more than an interesting biography. The book develops a link between diplomatic personalities, the foreign policies of the French kings Louis XV and Louis XVI, and the contemporary social, economic, and political problems during much of the eighteenth century. Indeed, Vergennes and his policies are central to any study of the American Revolution, the underlying causes of the French Revolution, and of the subsequent "Age of Revolutions" in Europe.

Book Synopsis Securing American Independence by : Frank W. Brecher
Download or read book Securing American Independence written by Frank W. Brecher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-04-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brecher explores the controversial diplomacy by which the United States separately brought to a de facto close its War of Independence against the British, leaving its one ally, France, in the lurch. He focuses on the two dominant, ostensibly allied peace negotiators, John Jay and Vergennes. Veteran diplomat and diplomatic history author Frank Brecher follows the chronology of the American War of Independence, alternating between accounts of the conflict as experienced diplomatically and, in less detail, militarily by the Americans and the French, respectively. In doing so, after summarizing in his preface a highly informed and articulate contemporary analysis of the origins of the Revolution from the perspective of the more conservative elements of the American leadership, of whom John Jay was very much a part, Brecher focuses on the particular experiences of Jay and Vergennes, both in their personal lives and in their politial careers. He describes and compares their respective—and quite different—preparations for their historical activities as peace negotiators, and describes the major developments of the conflict itself as they themselves participated in, and analyzed, them. While Vergennes, the French Foreign Minister, for the first time in his career, remained physically stationary in Versailles, Jay, for the first time in his life as well as career, left the New York region to live in Philadelphia, then Madrid, and finally Paris, before returning as Secretary for Foreign Affairs in 1784, after four and a half eventful and personally dramatic years abroad. The lessons each of these two diplomats learned as a result of the crucible through which they had to pass before their very personal—and historically important—encounter in France toward war's end very much affected the negotiating strategies they adopted and the ultimatley paradoxical mixture of both triumph and disappoinment with which they helped bring to a succesful conclusion the military phase of an alliance embarked upon by their two nations some five long years earlier. Brecher presents a provocative view of early American diplomacy that will be of interest to scholars and students alike.
Book Synopsis Vergennes: The Man Behind the Yorktown Victory by : Richard B. Rothwell
Download or read book Vergennes: The Man Behind the Yorktown Victory written by Richard B. Rothwell and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General George Washington was well aware of the pivotal role the French army and navy had played in the battle of Yorktown. He also know that French supplies had sustained his ragged army for almost five years. Without that support Continentals might have succumbed long age. Despite his debt, Washington may have given little thought that day to the man who, more than any other, was responsible for the decisive French contribution to the American Revolution, Comte Charles Gravier de Vergennes, Minister of Foreign Affairs to Louis XVI. Shrewd and single minded, Vergennes had made the victory possible by combining skillful diplomati maneuver and political opportunism to orchestrate French intervention while avoiding a premature confrontation with Great Britain. But paradoxically, from the perspective of France his accomplishments were for naught since they failed to achieve his goals.

Book Synopsis The Miracle of American Independence by : Jonathan R. Dull
Download or read book The Miracle of American Independence written by Jonathan R. Dull and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although American independence was no miracle, the timing of the country’s independence and its huge scope, both political and territorial, do seem miraculous. In The Miracle of American Independence Jonathan R. Dull reconstructs significant events before, during, and after the Revolutionary War that had dramatic consequences for the future as the colonies sought independence from Great Britain. Without these surprising and unexpected results, Dull maintains, the country would have turned out quite differently. The Miracle of American Independence reimagines how the British might have averted or overcome American independence, and how the fledgling country itself could have lost its independence. Drawing on his nearly fifty years of research and a lively imagination, Dull puts readers in a position to consider the American Revolution from the perspective of the European states and their monarchs. This alternative history provides a stimulating reintroduction to one of the most exciting periods in American and European history, proving that sometimes reality is even stranger and more miraculous than fiction.

Book Synopsis Passionate Sage: The Character and Legacy of John Adams by : Joseph J. Ellis

This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An absorbing, insightful profile of the revolutionary leader, president, husband, and father from one of our best historians, now in a beautiful new package. John Adams was unique among the nation’s founders in leaving a record of his most intimate thoughts and feelings. Instinctively candid and politically incisive, Adams offers the clearest view of the ambitions and principles that drove the revolutionary generation. Passionate Sage offers a brilliant introduction to the second president: his politics, his affinities for family and friendship even with political opponents like Jefferson, and his enduring significance. “Ellis’s palpable affection lends a pleasing glow to his profile of Adams, which is why Passionate Sage is his best book.”—Judith Shulevitz, New York Times Book Review “Impassioned and erudite. . . . A captivating portrait of this Massachusetts native as a wonderfully contrary genius possessed of an uncommon moral intelligence and farsighted political wisdom.”—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times “The best portrait of a Revolutionary-era statesman.”—Evan Thomas, Wall Street Journal
