Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ventilation in Mines The high importance of a uniform and sufficient supply of fresh air for the life and health of the workers in mines, and indeed for the performance of the various operations therein, would seem to justify special treatment of this branch of the art of mining. The Authors first idea was to undertake a translation of Theophil Guibal's work on Ventilation; but more than twenty years have elapsed since the death of that authority, during which period great progress has been made in the ventilation of mines; and, especially as opinions and knowledge have undergone considerable modification with regard to the dangerous gases occurring in mines, it proved necessary to amplify Guibal's work and bring it up to date. One point that required introduction was the matter of respiration and rescue apparatus. Another was the cooling of the workings, surrounding rock, and the air of the mine, this question having been brought to the front of late, in consequence of the ever-increasing depth of mining operations, and the accompanying rise in the rock temperature; to which must be added, in the case of coal mines, the increase in temperature due to the absorption of oxygen by coal at the ordinary temperature. As is well known, continued exposure to high temperature is injurious to health, and, since the working efficiency of the miners is reduced in proportion as the pit temperature is increased, it is necessary to take steps to combat this unfavourable influence. Now the only way to do this effectually is to replace the usual, simple air ways by driving three, four, and more intake and return air ways in setting out the mine, thus considerably increasing the surface of contact between the air current and the gallery walls, reducing the velocity of the current, and prolonging the period of contact. The individual ventilating and working sections must also be reduced in size, and the excessive length of the air ways avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Practice in Mining, Vol. 4: The Ventilation of Mines So far as the author is aware there is no work devoted entirely to a comprehensive consideration of the subject of mine ventilation, though there are several excellent books which treat of certain sides of the subject. It is hoped, therefore, that this little volume may be of some service to the young mining student in arriving at an elementary knowledge of the principles and practice of mine ventilation. For permission to use those of the figures which have not been specially drawn for illustrating the text, the author desires to tender his thanks to the various authors, manufacturers, and institutions from whom they have been borrowed. Hitherto splitting of air has not been much resorted to in Scotland, although in other mining dis tricts it has been found to be the chief improvement in oh taining increased quantity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mine Gases and Ventilation Any one who has been closely associated with the practical operation of coal mines will realize quickly the need of technical knowledge relating to the safe and economical production of coal. In no department of the work is this need more urgent than in the ventilation of the mine. A knowledge of the properties and behavior of the gases found or generated in the mine, and the means for effecting their safe removal or rendering them harmless are of chief importance, requiring careful study combined with practical experience in the operation of mines. Experience, without a knowledge of the theory of mining, is little better than is the possession of such knowledge by one who has had no experience in the practical work. Experience and knowledge must go hand in hand. The problems relating air, gases, ventilation, safety lamps, breathing apparatus, rescue work, gas and dust explosions in mines are treated in a thoroughly practical manner, while at the same time showing their correct solution. Formulas must always play an important part in mine ventilation and their treatment is made as simple as possible. No effort has been spared to make this volume a standard of ventilating practice. With this end in view, the various constants used have been carefully selected and are those most generally adopted. Particularly is this true of the tables of weight and measures and the conversion tables relating to the common and metric systems given in the Addenda. Their use is recommended. The present volume, which replaces the little booklet issued by Coal Age, some time previous, under the same title, will be recognized as a second edition of that handbook, though greatly enlarged by the addition of whole new sections on Safety Lamps, Oils, Breathing Apparatus, Rescue Work and numerous tables, making it a complete treatise on the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Underground Ventilation at Butte This bulletin on underground ventilation in the copper and zinc mines at Butte, Mont., was written in 1919 from data collected by Mr. Harrington during 1916, 1917, and 1918, when he and Dr. Lanza of the United States Public Health Service were engaged on a study of miners' consumption in mines of the Butte district. Largely on account of conditions arising from the World War, publication was deferred until this date, and its issuance now is because of the fact that it contains much up-to-date general information on ventilation in metal mines, though many of the specific underground conditions described have since been materially changed. The mines in the Butte district, with their hot rock, numerous veins, deep workings, and intensely concentrated activities, present to their operators many intricate problems requiring the utmost engineering skill. By no means the least of these problems is that of ventilation and this manuscript describes some of the numerous difficulties encountered in providing mine working places with safe, comfortable, and healthful air conditions. Although the difficulties encountered are great, the mining companies have grappled with them and have made and are making wonderful progress in ventilation betterments, and the specific underground conditions described as existing in 1916, 1917, and 1918 have, in very large measure, been changed for the better in these ways: 1. The dust situation has been largely eliminated by the adoption of wet drills for practically all drilling, by the introduction of water lines for sprinkling to practically all working faces in many mines, and by increasing the flow of air to working places to remove dust as it is formed. Butte mining companies are in the front rank of those metal-mining companies of the United States that are trying to reduce the dust hazard. 2. Practically every mine in Butte has at least one man who devotes a large part of his time to ventilation, overseeing methods and devices designed to force moving currents of fresh air to the workers. 3. During the past few years the volumes of air delivered to individual Butte mines have been vastly increased, the increase varying from 50 per cent to several hundred per cent. 4. Nearly all Butte mines have sunk special shafts for ventilation, or have installed fans, or have otherwise made heavy financial expenditures for equipment or facilities to better ventilation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining and Mine Ventilation: A Practical Handbook on the Physics All the general features contained in the first edition which students and others interested in the physics and chemistry of mining and mine ventilation, commended, have been retained in this revised edition. The chapters dealing with gases and mine ventilation have undergone revision, and new material added. The chapter treating of the sampling and analysis of mine gases is new, and has been written to supply a need which has arisen in teaching gas analysis and also to meet the growing demand for a more thorough knowledge of this branch of mining. In this chapter, mine gases are treated in a more practical way than is the custom in ordinary books on the subject. The properties of gases and the changes which affect their composition, together with the products of the combustion of gases, are clearly defined. The author appreciates the cordial reception given the first edition of his book and trusts the revised edition will meet with favor and speedily find a larger field of usefulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Gases Met With in Coal Mines and the General Principles of Ventilation The following remarks were written in the hope that some or other of them might prove of service in conveying to the merely practical miner a general knowledge of the laws and principles of ventilation, as applied to mines, and of the nature and properties, 'chemical and physical, of our atmosphere, as well as those of some of the gases most frequently encountered in coal mines. They were not intended to have been communicated to this or any similar institution, or thcy would, in all probability, not only have been put into somewhat different language, but would also have placed some of the matters to which they refer in a more purely scientific point of view. But, after all, such an alteration would, perhaps, have rendered them less useful than it is hoped they may prove to the particular class of persons for whom they were written, such as underviewers, overmen, deputy-overmen, and even workmen who may wish to fit themselves for assuming any of these offices; and, at the request of my colleague, your present President, I venture to submit them to your notice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mine-Ventilation Stoppings: With Especial Reference to Coal Mines in Illinois The foregoing discussion of renewals deals with the depreciation of stoppings through normal mining conditions. There are, however, extraordinary agencies that destroy stoppings, some of these agencies partly or wholly wrecking certain types of stoppings and yet in no Way injuring other types. Such agencies are: Fires, windy shots, blown-out shots, explosions, local roof falls, general mine squeezes, and water. In order to obtain the annual expense for emergency repairs on the different kinds of mine stoppings, information was obtained from coal operators regarding the number of stoppings and the cost of repairs each year because of these extraordinary agencies. The quotient obtained by dividing the total cost by the number of stop pings ih use at the particular mine was charged to each stopping as the a1mual cost of emergency repairs. For example, at one mine the records showed that 18 stoppings were destroyed by windy or blown out shots; the cost of each repair averaged the total cost was and, as stoppings were in use, the expense to be dis tributed over each stopping was 12 cents per annum. A compilation of the information obtained on the annual expense required for emergency repairs is given in Table 7 following.
