Book excerpt: Although studies of specific time concepts, expressed in Renaissance philosophy and literature, have not been lacking, few art-historians have endeavored to meet the challenge in the visual arts. This book presents a multifaceted picture of the dynamic concepts of time and temporality in medieval and Renaissance art, adopted in speculative, ecclesiastical, socio-political, propagandist, moralistic, and poetic contexts. It has been assumed that time was conceived in a different way by those living in the Renaissance as compared to their medieval predecessors. Changing perceptions of time, an increasingly secular approach, the sense of self-determination rooted in the practical use and control of time, and the perception of time as a threat to human existence and achievements are demonstrated through artistic media. Chapters dealing with time in classical and medieval philosophy and art are followed by studies that focus on innovative aspects of Renaissance iconography.

This collection of poems and anonymous folktales in the Molisan dialect traces the unfolding of two stories which, although distinct, interweave and complete each other: the author's individual story and the story of a town in the South of Italy. The images of an apparently immobile and archaic world alternate with the events of a complex and tormented historical reality, in whose magma the new and the old clash and fuse.

Book excerpt: This book is an endeavour to trace in many fields the extent of the inheritance which the modern world owes to Ancient Rome. The chapters have been written independently, and it will be seen that they are not all on the same plan. Some writers have described the contribution of Rome to civilization, and have left it to the reader to infer the extent of the legacy; others have traced the steps by which the legacy has come to us, and to this subject Professor Foligno has devoted a valuable chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally assumed that whatever else has changed about the human condition since the dawn of civilization, basic human emotions - love, fear, anger, envy, shame - have remained constant. David Konstan, however, argues that the emotions of the ancient Greeks were in some significant respects different from our own, and that recognizing these differences is important to understanding ancient Greek literature and culture. With The Emotions of the Ancient Greeks, Konstan reexamines the traditional assumption that the Greek terms designating the emotions correspond more or less to those of today. Beneath the similarities, there are striking discrepancies. References to Greek 'anger' or 'love' or 'envy,' for example, commonly neglect the fact that the Greeks themselves did not use these terms, but rather words in their own language, such as orgê and philia and phthonos, which do not translate neatly into our modern emotional vocabulary. Konstan argues that classical representations and analyses of the emotions correspond to a world of intense competition for status, and focused on the attitudes, motives, and actions of others rather than on chance or natural events as the elicitors of emotion. Konstan makes use of Greek emotional concepts to interpret various works of classical literature, including epic, drama, history, and oratory. Moreover, he illustrates how the Greeks' conception of emotions has something to tell us about our own views, whether about the nature of particular emotions or of the category of emotion itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of sacred music published by Venetian printing houses in the first half of the seventeenth century. In contrast with many assessments of the period, which focus on the works of Claudio Monteverdi and Giovanni Gabrieli, the book highlights particularly the contributions of composers who are less familiar to modern audiences, such as Ignazio Donati, Alessandro Grandi and Giovanni Rovetta. Many of the pieces the author discusses were not available in modern editions at the time the book was published, meaning the inclusion of a larger quantity of illustrative examples than other similar works. The first section of the book provides a historical and social context for the later chapters. The author gives an overview of the church's attitude towards changes in musical styles around the turn of the seventeenth century, discusses the musical institutions connected with sacred music, and explores the use of liturgy in motets. The subsequent four chapters discuss specific works composed between 1605 and 1643, with each chapter focused on works for a different number of voices. Chapter V discusses pieces for one to three voices, Chapter VI those for four to six voices, and Chapter VII and VIII those for seven or more voices. The book concludes with a short survey of developments during the rest of the seventeenth century.

Book excerpt: Monteverdi was born at Cremona in 1567 and died in Venice in 1643. The innovative nature of much of his music has generated considerable artistic and literary comment from the year 1600 onward. In this critical study, the author provides a practically oriented and concise book for both the musician and the researcher. He has avoided the tyranny of a chronological ordering of the compositions by considering them in the broad categories of sacred, secular, and occasional music, and has included fifty musical examples by way of illustration. The first category, dealing with secular vocal music, begins with the pieces written for Guarini's Il pastor fido. There is a special discussion of dialogues, followed by a survey of madrigals with and without continuo. Then come the canzonette, trios, duets, and solos. The section on religious music discusses settings of the Mass and Vespers.
