It’s also a country full of problems, as evidenced by having the biggest inflation rates and, by some estimates the highest crime rates worldwide. Despite having an oil boom between 2004 through 2008 with income of around two billion dollars, in 2016 it suffered an immense economic contraction and probably the largest supply shortcut crisis in its history. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Venezuela contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Venezuela.

Book excerpt: This paper was the dissertation submitted in 1996 to complete her Master of Arts Degree in Latin American Studies at the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) of the University of London. It sought to provide a scholarly account on the circumstances under which the nineteenth century Anglo-Venezuelan territorial dispute on the Esequibo region was resolved, . However, its main purpose is to discuss to what extent the events leading to the arbitration of 1898, and the arbitration decision itself, can be considered at the same time a victory to the United States, the last triumph to the declining British presence in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the greatest failures in the history of the Venezuelan foreign policy

Book Synopsis The Failure of Political Reform in Venezuela by : Julia Buxton
Download or read book The Failure of Political Reform in Venezuela written by Julia Buxton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. The victory of former lieutenant colonel Hugo Chavez in the Venezuelan presidential elections of 1998 was criticized as a blow against the country's deep-seated democratic tradition. It is claimed that this simplistic argument fails to recognize the extent of democratic deterioration in the country and the limitations imposed by discredited political actors on a meaningful democratic reform process. The book aims to break new ground in providing unseen evidence of electoral fraud and offers a fresh perspective on the nature of democratic development.

Book Synopsis Venezuela Reframed by : Luis Fernando Angosto-Ferrández
Download or read book Venezuela Reframed written by Luis Fernando Angosto-Ferrández and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the indigenous population in the formation of the Bolivarian constitution is one of Latin America’s most important untold stories. Considered a beacon of twenty-first century socialism by many, Venezuela is witnessing the paradoxical emergence of ‘indigenous capitalisms’ as the government and various indigenous actors are driven by notions of development and enfranchisement grounded in the ideology of multiculturalism. Venezuela Reframed shows that a considerable part of indigenous activism, aligned with the Bolivarian governments, has paved the way for development in classical, social-democratic terms. It looks at how, in opposition to sectors of the indigenous population fighting for effective autonomy, many legitimate claims are being usurped to consolidate capitalist relations. Boldly arguing that romanticized notions of cultural indigeneity hide growing class struggle, this book is essential reading not just for those interested in Venezuela, but all those interested in the prospects of democracy, contemporary states and alternatives to capitalism worldwide.

Book excerpt: Beauty, Virtue, Power, and Success in Venezuela 1850–2015 examines the societal duty of Venezuelan women to display and perform their inner virtue and worth through careful management of their outer physical appearance in four historical moments: 1850–1890, 1910–1950, 1960–1990, and 2000–2015. Since the early 1800’s, Venezuelan women—and more specifically, their bodies—have served as physical symbols of homeland, honor, and morality. Nichols contextualizes her study socially and historically by examining the impact of cultural phenomena like nineteenth-century eugenics, scientific motherhood, popular and elite literature, film, beauty pageants, and plastic surgery. This book tells the story of how Venezuelan women have learned to exercise and perform to societal expectations of beauty. Recommended for scholars of Latin American studies, women’s studies, gender studies, sociology, and history.
Book Synopsis Gunboats, Corruption, and Claims by : Brian McBeth
Download or read book Gunboats, Corruption, and Claims written by Brian McBeth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cipriano Castro administration, which ruled Venezuela from 1899 to 1908, was characterized by a series of internal and external political crises which seemed capable of toppling it at any moment. In 1901, a number of foreign countries provided financial backing to Castro's former allies, united under the leadership of Manuel Antonio Matos, who almost brought the government down. In the midst of this civil war, Germany, the United Kingdom and later Italy instituted what came to be known as the peaceful blockade of Venezuela to force the government to honor its foreign debts. The claims and counter-claims stemming from the conflict would eventually force the three foreign countries to sever diplomatic relations in the ensuing years. Far from its portrayal as a nationalist champion, the Castro administration was, in McBeth's findings, more focused on the accumulation of personal wealth than on defense of Venezuelan interests. Castro would pay dearly for his misdeeds, losing power in a 1908 coup to Juan Vicente Gómez and remaining in exile until his death in 1924. The conflict would prove to be a watershed in relations with Latin America, as the United States modified its own foreign policy in response and the European powers became more aware of the limit of their political influence in the region.
