Book excerpt: Mining private writings and humanist texts, Erin Maglaque explores the lives and careers of two Venetian noblemen, Giovanni Bembo and Pietro Coppo, who were appointed as colonial administrators and governors. In Venice’s Intimate Empire, she uses these two men and their families to showcase the relationship between humanism, empire, and family in the Venetian Mediterranean. Maglaque elaborates an intellectual history of Venice’s Mediterranean empire by examining how Venetian humanist education related to the task of governing. Taking that relationship as her cue, Maglaque unearths an intimate view of the emotions and subjectivities of imperial governors. In their writings, it was the affective relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, humanist teachers and their students that were the crucible for self-definition and political decision making. On June 11, 1940 when he was ready to board the Britannic and sail to New York from Liverpool, he was arrested as an enemy alien. A few days laer he was shipped behind barbed wire across the Atlantic, then infested with German U boats, interned in Canada for fourteen months as a prisoner of war. Eventually his status as a "refugee" was recognized by the British Government but legal technicalities prevented his immigration to the US from Canada and imposed a detour to Cuba. Finally after a long wait and with the sponsorship of Arturo Toscanini he was able to rejoin his mother and sister in New York just a few days before Pearl Harbor. Giulio L. Cantoni, an internationally known biochemist, has served for forty years as Laboratory Chief at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. He has published more than 150 papers and is a co-author of several scientific books. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Italian Academy of Science. In 1968 he founded and now directs the FAES Chamber of Music Concert Series at NIH, generally regarded as the best in the Washington area. He lives in Bethesda with his wife of 35 years.

Book excerpt: The premise of Anna Green's timely and original book, is that nineteenth-century representations of childhood and adolescence-in paintings, but also in other forms of visual culture and in diverse written discourses of the period-are critical for understanding modernity. Whilst such well-worn signifiers for modernity as the city, the dandy and the prostitute have been well mined, childhood and adolescence have not. Paintings of the young produced in France from 1848 to 1886, Green contends, inform not only our understanding of modern life but also our perception of modernist or avant-garde painting. Figuring largely are Manet and the Impressionists, as well as a gamut of more traditional painters of children who are crucial in providing context for the avant garde. Because modernity is an essentially urban phenomenon, Green's focus is primarily on the city, usually Parisian, child. The painted youth of her study are organized initially by class and gender. Then the chapters are structured according to themes (parent-child relations, modes of discipline, work, education, and play, the spectacle, sexuality) that straddle the congruences among the book's triple trajectory: the young, their modernist representations, and the experience of modernity. Examining ecclesiastical and civil lawsuits related to illicit sex, broken marriage promises and disrupted marriages of artisan and ordinary women and men, Daniela Hacke can convincingly show how central sexual morality was to the patriarchal society of sixteenth and seventeenth century Venice. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, the author skilfully reconstructs what gender difference meant in daily life, in courtship rituals, marital disputes, and in sexual relations. In the streets and in the courts, women and men fought not only over proper gender behaviour within and outside marriage, but also about the meaning of conjugality and of domestic patriarchy. Neighbours played an active role in mediating between distressed partners and between children and parents. Their interventions and perceptions reveal much about the moral values and the networks of support within a fascinatingly heterogeneous community such as early modern Venice.
