Book excerpt: This project investigated the flow field characteristics over a flat, ribletted plate and the effects of an adverse pressure gradient on this flow field. Testing examined the development of the flow over the ribletted plate from laminar through fully turbulent flow fields. The flow field states (laminar, transitional, and turbulent) were determined using local turbulence intensity values and boundary layer profiles. Several parameters were examined to help better describe the flow characteristics, boundary layer profiles, and influence on skin friction drag. The skin friction drag coefficients were calculated using a numerical integration technique to determine an average value and scaled to the platform area of the plate to compare results with smooth plate values. Although the geometry and flow conditions produced a drag augmenting case, skin friction followed trends described by the other flow parameters; streamwise velocity, Reynolds stress, etc. At locations where the boundary layer developed in the riblet valley, the skin friction was higher. As the flow developed to transitional and fully turbulent, higher values were also experienced. For the zero pressure gradient and mild adverse pressure gradient, counter rotating vortices developed in the riblet valley. This more organized motion also had slightly reduced skin friction below the transitional flow field for the plate as well.

However, to define this value accurately, one should have a clear conception of the possibilities and efficiency of application of one or another technique for a special case of body flow around. Though any experimental work assumes application of a certain concrete technique, including one for skin friction finding, the available literature information is as a rule uncoordinated, i.e., this information reflects only the level of availability of the technique applied. For this reason the researches like devoted to the development of new techniques and investigation of the efficiency of the known ones under various experimental conditions, become very important. The simplified layout gives a pictorial view of the main techniques of skin friction measurement, existing at the present time. The detailed consideration of these techniques is given in The present paper presents a comparative analysis of a number of direct and indirect measuring techniques wen they are applied in a incompressible turbulent boundary layer of a flat plate under the conditions of formation of a unfavorable (positive) and favorable (negative) streamwise pressure gradients on the plate surface, and also in plate gradient-free flow around.

A feature unique to this rake is its curved body, which allows pitot tubes to be more densely clustered in the near-wall region than conventional rakes allow. This curved rake design has a complex three-dimensional shape that requires innovative solid-modeling and machining techniques. Finite-element stress analysis of the new design shows high factors of safety. The rake has passed a ground test in which random vibration measuring 12 g rms was applied for 20 min in each of the three normal directions. Aerodynamic evaluation of the rake has been conducted in the NASA Glenn Research Center 8x6 Supersonic Wind Tunnel at Mach 0-2. The pitiot pressures from the new rake agree with conventional rake data over the range of Mach numbers tested. The boundary-layer profiles computed from the rake data have been shown to have the standard logarithmic-law profile. Skin friction values computed from the rake data using the Clauser plot method agree with the Preston tube results and the van Driest II compressible skin friction correlation to approximately plus/minus 5 percent.

The incompressible law-of-the-wake equations are numerically integrated across the boundary layer depth to develop an engineering model that relates longitudinally averaged skin-friction coefficients to local boundary layer thickness. Solutions applicable to smooth surfaces with pressure gradients and rough surfaces with negligible pressure gradients are presented. Model accuracy is evaluated by comparing model predictions with previously measured flight data. This integral law procedure is beneficial in that skin-friction coefficients can be indirectly evaluated in real-time using a single boundary layer height measurement. In this concept a reference pitot probe is inserted into the flow, well above the anticipated maximum thickness of the local boundary layer. Another probe is servomechanism-driven and floats within the boundary layer. A controller regulates the position of the floating probe. The measured servomechanism of this second probe provides an indirect measurement of both local and longitudinally averaged skin friction. Simulation results showing the performance of the control law for a noisy boundary layer are then presented.
