Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) using the dual scatter or differential Doppler mode have been made in a subsonic, fully developed channel flow. The measurements were made using only those light scattering particles occurring naturally in air. Results include mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress distributions and a skewness measurement of the velocity distribution function across the channel. Statistical techniques were used to obtain the various turbulence parameters. Guidelines have been established for the amount of data needed to obtain results with a specified accuracy and confidence level. Measurements have also been made to determine the particle-size distribution. An aerodynamic means was used to determine the size distribution, in contrast to the usual optical procedures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems documents the proceedings of the 6th Colloquium held at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, 22-26 August 1977. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the International Academy of Astronautics. The scientific program included over one hundred papers. The contributions in this volume are organized into four parts. Part I contains papers on gaseous detonations. It covers topics such as theoretical model of a detonation cell; spherical detonations in hydrocarbon-air mixtures; and shock wave propagation in tubes filled with water foams. Part II presents studies on explosions, such as the detonation of hydrogen azide and propagation of a laser-supported detonation wave. Part III examines condensed phase detonations. It includes papers on the mechanism of the divergent and convergent dark waves originating at the charge boundary in detonating liquid homogeneous explosives with unstable detonation front; and initiation studies in sensitized nitromethane. Part IV presents discussions on turbulent detonations, covering topics such as the computational aspects of turbulent combustion and problems and techniques in turbulent reactive systems.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A laser-Doppler velocimeter has been used to quantify the velocity characteristics of an unconfined recirculating flame with an heat load around 150 kW formed downstream of an annular jet propane gas surrounded by a co-axial swirling air flow, which was set at Re = 58000. The results characterize the aerodynamics of disc-stabilized non-premixed flames within a swirling air flow and include the analysis of the rate of heat transfer in these flames. To achieve these objectives, the laser velocimeter was combined with digitally-compensated fine-wire thermocouples, which have also allowed to quantify the extent of the degree of internal mixing obtained in annular swirling flames. The results were obtained for fuel-lean conditions (AFR = 44.7) and identify an annular swirling flow associated with a double vortical structure established in the wake of the baffle with maximum negative velocities around 0.20 U sub 9 at r/D sub 9 = 0.45 and positive centerline velocities up to +0.1 U sub 9. The diffussion of heat in the radial direction is shown to follow conventional scalar-viscosity concepts, but there are large zones of the reacting shear layer where the results show axial counter-gradient diffusion of heat.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of a laser-Doppler velocimeter has been extended to the analysis of turbulent heat transfer in a strongly sheared disc-stabilized propane-air flame through its combination with either laser Rayleigh scattering or digitally-compensated fine-wire thermocouples. The laser velocimeter was based on a conventional forward scattering system from the green light of a 5W Argon-Ion gas laser, while the Rayleigh signals used the blue line of the same laser. The procedure for the numeric compensation of the thermocouple signals included analysis of the effect of velocity and temperature on the time constant of the thermocouple and was optimized to allow combined velocity-temperature samples acquired by a purpose-built digital interface with a frequency up to 2000 Hz without deterioration of the thermocouple by particle accretion. The maximum effective data rate for the combined Rayleigh/LDV system is shown to be around 130 Hz, which corresponds to a data rae of valid Doppler signals around 400 Hz. The results obtained with the two systems agree qualitatively, although the use of thermocouples attenuates the measured velocity-temperature correlations. The results are used to assess the extent to which turbulent mixing in flames is altered by the accompanying heat release and quantify the processes of non-gradient diffusion in a strongly recirculating premixed flame.
