Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is an attempt to arrange a mappable presentation of the distribution of soils and soil conditions in a region of the Arctic in which little previous pedologic information was available. This was accomplished by field investigations during the 1961, 1962, and 1963 summer seasons, and by partial characterization of soil individuals through use of chemical, physical, and mineralogical techniques in the laboratory. The findings of this report are presented in chapter form. Chapter One includes a brief description of the area of primary study, the Howard Pass Quadrangle. As they are known, the bedrock geology, surficial geology, physiography, climate, an vegetation are presented. Chapter Two is composed of literature reviews and discussions of soil mapping attempts in the Alaskan Arctic, frost phenomena, the soil-vegetation relationships, aerial photographic interpretation for soil mapping purposes, and the recognized genetic soil groupings. Definitions and descriptions of the individual mapping units and the primary legend are also included in Chapter Two. Chapter Three includes maps of soil distribution and discussions of the maps. Chapter Four is morphological, chemical, and physical data accumulated in the study and its interpretation. Chapter Five presents supplementary studies from areas other than the Howard Pass Quadrangle. (Author).

Book excerpt: Concepts of Arctic pedology are applied to the glaciated and unglaciated terrains in the vicinity of the Okpilak River, northeastern Alaska. Two types of frost action in Arctic soils are considered: (1) the surficial configurations or patterned ground, and (2) the morphological characteristics of the seasonally thawed soil and the upper zone of perennially frozen ground. About 55 types of soil conditions and surface features are described and mapped in an area encompassing both the northern Brooks Range and the southern Foothill Provinces. These include the genetic soils of Arctic Alaska, numerous soil conditions, and many of the common sorted and nonsorted circles, nets, polygons, steps, and stripes. In the glaciated and periglacial areas, sorted features predominate on the coars-textured substrata. The Arctic brown soils are distributed on the well-drained sites along valley traverses and across mountain gradients. On a sequence of valley moraines, acid parent material is considered more important than time and mesoenvironments in influencing the depth and development of the characteristic brown solum. Weakening of the soil-forming processes with increasing altitude is suggested in the mountains. In the valleys, a podzol-like soil is observed in close proximity to the Arctic brown soils and in association with acid parent materials, dwarf birch-heath vegetation and protected microrelief positions. A combination of peaty soils associated with icewedge polygons constitutes an organic terrain. The developments of these soils under the Arctic environment are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Analyses of relationships between hydric soils and wetland plant species were made at a site in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range, Alaska, as part of a cooperative effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Soil Conservation Service to develop methods for field identification of wetlands and hydric soils. The site is considered to be representative of broad regions of acidic tussock tundra in the foothills. Seven soil types (subgroups) were identified at the site. All except two are considered hydric.

Book excerpt: One hundred thirty forests stands ranging in age from 1 month postfire to 200 years were sampled and described by successional series (white spruce and black spruce) and by developmental stage (newly burned, moss-herb, tall shrub-sapling, dense tree, hardwood, and spruce). Patterns of change in the two successional series are described. In addition, 12 mature forest communities are described in quantitative and qualitative terms.
