Book Synopsis Indicator Plants of Coastal British Columbia by : A. Ceska
Download or read book Indicator Plants of Coastal British Columbia written by A. Ceska and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original work makes unprecedented use of some of the most important research to date in plant ecology. It is a guide for assessing site quality, that is, the climate and soil of particular forest and non-forest ecosystems. Foresters have long been interested in using plants as indicators in predicting the growth performance of reforestation sites, but the data have not been readily available. Indicator Plants of Coastal British Columbia fully discusses how indicator plants are recognized and demonstrates how indicator plants can be used in site diagnosis. The book presents colour illustrations and descriptions of 419 selected vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens of coastal British Columbia. Indicators with similar values are grouped into indicator species groups which are used to evaluate site quality. These data are supplemented by information on geographic distribution, life-form, shade tolerance, and other ecological characteristics of the species. Three methods are given on how to use indicator plants for the purpose of site diagnosis. Indicator Plants of Coastal British Columbia summarizes original research in a format which both students and practitioners will find easy to use.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional intercomparisons between ecosystems on different continents can be a powerful tool to better understand the ways in which ecosystems respond to global change. Large areas are often needed to characterize the causal mechanisms governing interactions between ecozones and their environments. Factors such as weather and climate patterns, land-ocean and land-atmosphere interactions all play important roles. As a result of the strong physical north-south symmetry between the western coasts of North and South America, the similarities in climate, coastal oceanography and physiography between these two regions have been extensively documented. High Latitude Rain Forests and Associated Ecosystems of the West Coast of the Americas presents current research on West Coast forest and river ecology, and compares ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest with those of South America.

Book Synopsis Global to Local: Ecological Land Classification by : Richard A. Sims
Download or read book Global to Local: Ecological Land Classification written by Richard A. Sims and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Land Classification (ELC) refers to the description of land resources at a range of spatial resolutions (i.e. global to local) and for a range of purposes or values. The emerging science of ELC is in fact a very carefully integrated blend of vegetation and earth sciences, climatology, cartography and ecology with a range of new technologies and methodologies including computer-based geographic information systems, remote sensing and simulation modelling. This publication defines the current `state-of-the-art' of ELC. It provides particular insight into the role of ELC in current and future forest resource planning and management, and emphasizes its application and usefulness at various spatial scales, for a variety of geographic locations, and under a range of management scenarios/constraints. The book is an invaluable and substantial reference source about the current trends in ELC and will be of particular value to ecologists, foresters, geographers, resource managers, wildlife biologists, GIS and remote sensing specialists, educators and students.

Book Synopsis The Sunflower Family (Asteraceae) of British Columbia by : George W. Douglas
Download or read book The Sunflower Family (Asteraceae) of British Columbia written by George W. Douglas and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sunflower family is one of the largest families of plants and includes many well-known species such as the dandelion, wormwood, goldenrod, chrysanthemum, and camomile. Over 300 sunflower family species are found in British Columbia. After an introduction reviewing the general characteristics of the sunflower family, this volume provides detailed taxonomic descriptions of species found in British Columbia from four tribes of this family: Astereae (including asters and daisies), Anthemideae (including sagebrush and tansy), Eupatorieae (including bricklebrush), and Inuleae (including filago and everlasting). An important purpose of this guide is to enable non-botanists to identify different species, and it includes identification keys, illustrations of various parts of the plants, and maps of the plant's known geographic range in the province. An appendix includes a glossary, lists of species and synonyms, and a list of excluded taxa.
