Book Synopsis Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality by : Ayon Maharaj
Download or read book Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality written by Ayon Maharaj and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Ramakrishna is widely known as a nineteenth-century Indian mystic who affirmed the harmony of all religions on the basis of his richly varied spiritual experiences and eclectic religious practices, both Hindu and non-Hindu. In Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality, Ayon Maharaj argues that Sri Ramakrishna was also a sophisticated philosopher of great contemporary relevance. Through a careful study of Sri Ramakrishna's recorded oral teachings in the original Bengali, Maharaj reconstructs his philosophical positions and analyzes them from a cross-cultural perspective. Sri Ramakrishna's spiritual journey culminated in the exalted state of "vijñana," his term for the "intimate knowledge" of God as the Infinite Reality that is both personal and impersonal, with and without form, immanent in the universe and beyond it. This expansive spiritual standpoint of vijñana, Maharaj contends, opens up a new paradigm for addressing central issues in cross-cultural philosophy of religion, including divine infinitude, religious pluralism, mystical experience, and the problem of evil. Sri Ramakrishna's vijñana-based religious pluralism--when grasped in all its subtlety--proves to have major philosophical advantages over dominant Western models. Moreover, his mystical testimony and teachings not only cut across long-standing debates about the nature of mystical experience but also bolster recent defenses of its epistemic value. Maharaj further demonstrates that Sri Ramakrishna's unique response to the problem of evil resonates strongly with Western "soul-making" theodicies and contemporary theories of skeptical theism. A pioneering interdisciplinary study of one of India's most important philosopher-mystics, Maharaj's book is essential reading for scholars and students in philosophy of religion, theology, religious studies, and Hindu studies.

Download or read book Truth written by Paramhangsa Soham Swami and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRUTH is a philosophical poem on the subject of non-dualism as elucidated by Vedanta. First published in 1913, it is the first philosophical English work in poetry. Though it was the normal practice among the ancient and medieval Indian authors to present not only the philosophical thoughts in verses but almost every Sanskrit work had been composed in the form of poetry, but in the English literary tradition versifying philosophies and discourses of academic importance is unheard of. In TRUTH, the Vedantin Parmahangsa Soham Swami for the first time used the poetic form to present the philosophy of Vedanta in English. TRUTH is unique. It does not introduce the reader to the precepts of Vedanta at the onset. The poet clarifies his intention in the initial lines - Truth have I realized so truth shall tell.To free thy mind from superstitious spell; He bewares the reader of the risks entailed in such revelations when he writes -Against my Truth they only may protest, Who think of nothing but self-interest. The greatest obstacle to free thinking is irrational belief. Soham Swami writes - That blind faith checks the free-thoughts of the mind And hinders progress all, of humankind;Through logical arguments the poet clarifies -To manufacture God, it's broadEfficient cause is man, Material's fancy, somewhere fraud, Now realize those who can. When the reader with 'unbiased' mind observes and judges "all in Truth's brilliant light," the reader realizes -Religions, cults and rites, - the gilded gyves, Fetter the people, whereby priesthood thrives; And that Benevolence and science can't allayThe grief, and thirst for more, and death, decay; The reader now desperate to know the truth asks What is creation, and its cause, Who am I, my supreme vocation? This is the right time to introduce the bewildered reader to the philosophy of Vedanta. Once again the poet uses logical arguments to demonstrate the Truth - Brahm thou art, nor portion, nor apart, Realize, restraining mind, that "that thou art'. For those interested in realizing the TRUTH, he guides them through the difficult terrain that leads to the Ultimate Truth that few are capable of traversing. About the Author: Paramhangsa Soham Swami (1858-1918) was a follower of the Indian tradition of non-dualism or Advaita Vedanta. Known as Shyamakanta Bandopadhyay (Banerjee) in his pre-monastic days, he was renowned for his extraordinary physical strength and exemplary courage. After graduating from Dacca College, he chose an unusual vocation - wrestling with wild tigers. He was revered by Indians and Europeans as Professor Banerjee, the first tiger tamer of India. However, at the age of 41, renouncing wealth, family and fame, he became an ascetic. Under the tutelage of his master Nabin Chandra Chakroborty alias Tibbatibaba he discovered the Absolute Truth. Download or read book Vedanta written by Hans Torwesten and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 1994-01-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vedanta is the most encompassing and open of the six orthodox systems of Hinduism and is considered the quintessence of Eastern thought and mysticism. An important part of modern intellectual Hinduism, Vedanta is often regarded as a truly universal religion and had many adherents in the West. At the center of Vedanta lie the texts of the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. Beginning with the premise that man is a divine being whose greatest source of strength is his intuition, Vedanta seeks not merely the accumulation of knowledge, but rather the annihilation of all knowledge. Its goal is an unclouded inner world that will allow us to exist untroubled by the complexity of the outside world. For those interested in the concise and intelligent overview, as well as those who seek a better understanding of what is at the heart of Hinduism, Vedanta is a unique and thought-provoking guide.
