Book Synopsis Fiction as History by : Vasudha Dalmia
Download or read book Fiction as History written by Vasudha Dalmia and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains the Hindi novel’s role in anticipating and creating the story of middle-class modernity and modernization in North India. Vasudha Dalmia offers a panoramic view of the intellectual and cultural life of North India over a century, from the aftermath of the 1857 uprising to the end of the Nehruvian era. The North’s historical cities, rooted in an Indo-Persianate culture, began changing more slowly than the Presidency towns founded by the British. Dalmia takes up eight canonical Hindi novels set in six of these cities—Agra, Allahabad, Banaras, Delhi, Lahore, and Lucknow—to trace a literary history of domestic and political cataclysms. Her exploration of the emerging Hindu middle classes, changing personal and professional ambitions, and new notions of married life provides a vivid sense of urban modernity. She argues that the radical social transformations associated with post-1857 urban restructuring, and the political flux resulting from social reform, Gandhian nationalism, communalism, Partition, and the Cold War shaped the realm of the intimate as much as the public sphere. Love and friendship, notions of privacy, attitudes to women’s work, and relationships within households are among the book’s major themes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life: A Conflict reflects the struggles faced by people. Every person has to struggle in one way or the other. Some struggle to survive in the society whereas others struggle to survive within the family. People are living in different social orders, and they are bound to them. Most of the time, these struggles are not known to the world, or we all ignore it because we were not involved in it. We can think about the struggles that a person faces in his entire life, but what about animals? Animals too have to struggle to live their lives as people are becoming more and more self-centered, and they are not caring about their own families' feelings, let alone animals. This book also reflects the struggle that animals face and how they manage to live. It is a collection of untold stories that show the reality of our society. My memories take me back into my past. I grew up traveling to various towns and studying there. I clearly recognized the differences in the multiple traits of people such as lifestyle, way of conversation, food habits, and even the patterns of abuse. When my memories didn't fade away with time, I decided to write them down and share them with the world. I believe that the readers of this book would have come across such events and memories. Thus, as a reader, you will be able to connect with the stories.

Book excerpt: Set in the last century, starting from the mid-thirties to the end of the millennium, this is a story of a Marathi Brahmin Family that goes through many ups and downs through the sands of time. Over the years due to variety of reasons, Brahmins have lost their foothold in the same land they call their own, starting from social boycott for their religious fanaticism, coming out of their vanity about superiority over the other castes, to the total devastation after Gandhi’s assassination and land reforms. The matriarch of the family, though undereducated by today’s standards, is worldly-wise and carries the burden of entire families from both sides courageously and comes out valiant in her efforts to keep the dignity of her husband’s family intact. She has a secret hidden deep down in the labyrinths of her mind that, if surfaced, would have not only devastated the entire family but would have tarnished the image held so far in high esteem. While doing so, she has to make many sacrifices on her personal front, which she braves nonchalantly without compromising either on her poise or intelligence. All in all, The Heir is the story of marginalized Brahmins in today’s context, who, too, had to face the hell to reach where they are today through their perseverance and intelligence!

Book Synopsis Everything Will Be Alright by : Shubhanku Kochar
Download or read book Everything Will Be Alright written by Shubhanku Kochar and published by Author's Ink India. This book was released on with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel is about two lovers cum friends Nihal and Bhoomi who leave their houses in search of fulfillment. They both have a dream. Nihal wants to win a gold medal in Mega events on an international platform; whereas Bhoomi wants to search her biological parents as she is an adopted child. Both of them meet at a certain point and fall in love and decide to get married even after the divine forces have declined for their match. Along with this runs a parallel story of Antra and Apurava who come from different backgrounds. They also fall in love with their own terms for getting married. The story is full of magic realism where God and human being, myth and reality participate collectively towards a certain direction. The attempt here is to experiment with the phrase: Everything will be alright. Actually, human beings have the tendency of saying to each other that “Don’t worry, Everything will be alright,” in our sheer exuberance, we keep on challenging the unseen forces represented by God. The question that the novel poses before the reader is “Can everything be alright?” Moreover, the intervention of God or Nature at various places is symbolic in asserting that human being should not try to behave like the Lord of Universe.

Download or read book PandaLeaks written by Wilfried Huismann and published by Nordbook. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WWF, renowned global nature conservancy brand, greenwashes the ecological crimes of corporations currently destroying the last remaining rainforests and natural habitats on earth; and it accepts their money. This business model of the famous “eco” organization does more to harm nature than to protect it. The WWF cannot refute the facts gathered by esteemed journalist and filmmaker Wilfried Huismann during his two-year research expedition to all corners of the green empire. A journalistic tour de force unearthing the grim secrets behind the warm and cuddly façade of the WWF, Huismann’s exposé went straight to the German bestseller list. The book is now available in English, unabridged and updated. Huismann also dug deep into the early history of the world’s most powerful nature conservancy organization and found several skeletons in the closet: the elite secret club known as “The 1001” and a private military commando unit deployed in Africa against big game poachers – and against black African liberation movements. In the name of environmental protection the WWF has participated in the displacement and cultural extinction of indigenous peoples the world over.

Book Synopsis Nation and Its Modes of Oppressions in South Asia by : Sajal Nag
Download or read book Nation and Its Modes of Oppressions in South Asia written by Sajal Nag and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines nationhood as a concept and how it became the basis of political discourse in South Asia. It studies the emergence of nationalism in modern states as a powerful, omnipotent, and omnipresent form of political identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book examines the idea of a nation, as it originated in medieval Europe, as an unending process of 'othering' individuals, groups, and communities to establish its hegemony, exclusivity, and absolute power within a political discourse. It sheds light on how these new political frameworks in the name of nationalism resulted in conflicts and bloodshed. It unleashed politics of retribution and facilitated majoritarianism, minority persecution, and collective authoritarianism which devastated individuals and collectivities. Further, the author also discusses various prominent ideas and contemporary theories on nationalism alongside pivotal socio-cultural factors which have significantly shaped the formation of modern nation states and their politics. Topical and nuanced, this book will be indispensable to researchers, scholars, and readers interested in nationalism, political science, modern history, political theory, political philosophy, political sociology, political history, post-colonial studies, and South Asia studies.
