Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vassar College Bulletin, Vol. 9: The Fifth General Catalogue of the Officers and Alumnae of Vassar College; May, 1920 The information given in the biographical and address section is based on que'stionnaires which were sent to all alumnae who could be reached. Whenever necessary three attempts were made to get into communication; two notices were sent from the office direct and the third via class representatives. Altogether eighty-one per cent of the living alumnae responded. Where the three attempts all failed, the committee entered in the register simply the name and latest te corded address, since biographical information gathered indirectly was bound to be incomplete and very possibly incorrect. Information about alumnae who had died was taken from the 1910 catalogue and from Statements sent in by relatives or close friends. Late questionnaires, corrections and additions continued to come to the office long after the register copy had been sent to the printers. In some instances it was possible to make the corrections requested when the proof sheets were being read, but such instances, unfortunately, Were the exception rather than the rule.
