Book excerpt: This volume represents a contemporary artist's tribute to the endangered plants and flowers of the world. It is both an ecological statement, and a call to arms. It focuses on plant life, of which an estimated 30-60,000 varieties are in imminent danger of extinction. The book's format - each illustration is given its own page - permits the reader to see the detail of each plant's structure. Captions describe the plants' history, uses, and status. Research and information about the threats to each plant's survival amplify the strong conservation message. The book provides both an appreciation of our remaining plant life, as well as an explanation of the facts of a relatively unreported global situation. An appendix provides more than 100 organizations to contact in the US and around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It happened in Manchester, May 12-14, 2004. - For the fifth time since the early 1990's the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Society of the Chemical Industry jointly held their 'flavours & fragrances' conference, this time in the Manchester Conference Centre of the UMIST Manchester. The meeting saw over one hundred participants from one dozen countries, and was the largest of the series so far. In two and a half days divided into five sessions, twenty-five speakers from academia and industry alike presented their recent research results related to this exciting field, including Natural Products, Foods and Flavors, Perfumery and Olfaction, and last but not least Fragrance Chemistry. Research is more than ever central to the F&F industry with its constant demand for innovation and its frequently changing trends. Especially, in the classic and well-explored domains of musks and amber odorants fascinating new discoveries were made only very recently, which proves the endless possibilities in the search for new aroma chemicals. This was also reflected in the logo of the conference, which featured Ambrocenide? as a new powerful ambery odorant that emerged from classical cedrene chemistry - and it is as well reflected in four of the sixteen conference papers that are collected in this special issue of Chemistry & Biodiversity. With its focus on biorelevant chemicals, Chemistry & Biodiversity was predestined to publish the diverse highlight papers of the 'flavours & fragrances' conference. Fragrance and fragrance materials by definition elicit a biological response, serve as versatile signals, trigger the sense of smell and taste in various ways - and every odorant design is nothing more than 'chemistry probing nature'. But Fragrance Chemistry can also document and even preserve the biodiversity of scents, as was the topic of the lecture of Roman Kaiser, which had been published in advance as the first full paper of Chemistry & Biodiversity.

Book excerpt: A Showcase of spectacular photographs of rare and little seen plants, raising awareness of their endangerment. South Africa has lost 116 indigenous flower species to three extinction categories: 'Extinct', 'Extinct in the Wild' and 'Critically Endangered, Possibly Extinct'. Mindful of the fact that extinctions are mainly due to people, Cape-based photographer Anneke Kearney compiled this photographic record of endangered plants to make people aware of the dire future of our beautiful plants, so that nobody can say, 'I didn't know'. Cape Town has more threatened species than any other area in the country. The most important other hotspots are Coega, Albany, Pondoland, KwaZulu-Natal midlands and Drakensberg, Magaliesberg, Sekhukhuneland-Drakensberg and Barberton. Renowned botanist and conservation campaigner, Dr Tony Rebelo, says in the Foreword that a call to action is not just for us. It is for our children. It is not just for esoteric and idealist reasons. Thousands of visitors come ... every year just for the biodiversity. Hundreds of thousands more have it as one of the reasons for their visit. Our health, our relaxation, our existence is enhanced by living in a biodiversity showcase. The Littlest Kingdom on earth must retain its splendour ... there is space for everyone, including the biodiversity that occurs nowhere else on earth. This book with its spectacular photographs of rare and little seen plants, is sure to make a huge contribution to raising awareness of and spreading critical information on our indigenous flora.

Book excerpt: 'I found myself turning the pages with an inward leap of joy' - Isabella Tree *WINNER of the Richard Jefferies Award for Nature Writing* *Shortlisted for the James Cropper Wainwright Prize for Conservation* 'Exquisite' GUARDIAN It was a tragic day for the nation's wildlife when England's last and loneliest golden eagle died in an unmarked spot among the remote eastern fells of the Lake District. But the fight to restore the landscape had already begun. Lee Schofield, ecologist and site manager for RSPB Haweswater, is leading efforts to breathe life back into two hill farms and their thirty square kilometres of sprawling upland habitat. Informed by the land, its turbulent history and the people who have shaped it, Lee and his team are repairing damaged wetlands, meadows and woods. Each year, the landscape is becoming richer, wilder and better able to withstand the shocks of a changing climate. But in the contested landscape of the Lake District, change is not always welcomed, and success relies on finding a balance between rewilding and respecting cherished farming traditions. This is not only a story of an ecosystem in recovery, it is also the story of Lee's personal connection to place, and the highs and lows of working for nature amid fierce opposition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • • • John Harper • • • Nature conservation has changed from an idealistic philosophy to a serious technology. Ecology, the science that underpins the technol ogy of conservation, is still too immature to provide all the wisdom that it must. It is arguable that the desire to conserve nature will in itself force the discipline of ecology to identify fundamental prob lems in its scientific goals and methods. In return, ecologists may be able to offer some insights that make conservation more practicable (Harper 1987). The idea that nature (species or communities) is worth preserv ing rests on several fundamental arguments, particularly the argu ment of nostalgia and the argument of human benefit and need. Nostalgia, of course, is a powerful emotion. With some notable ex ceptions, there is usually a feeling of dismay at a change in the sta tus quo, whether it be the loss of a place in the country for walking or rambling, the loss of a painting or architectural monument, or that one will never again have the chance to see a particular species of bird or plant.
