Book excerpt: When describing something that spans from being versatile to miraculous, you're talking about an entity that starts with a broad, adaptable capability and then elevates to a level of performance or impact that is extraordinary and awe-inspiring. For example, a versatile tool might handle a wide range of tasks effectively, but when it accomplishes something so innovative or effective that it seems almost impossible, it becomes miraculous. Similarly, a person who is versatile in their skills may, under certain circumstances, achieve something so exceptional that it transcends ordinary expectations, entering the realm of the miraculous.

Book excerpt: Both what leaders do--management--and what they plan for the future--leadership--is faulty today. Performance is low, commitment to excellence is lacking, our expectations are low, unchallenging, and unrealistic. That said, Gilbert W. Fairholm goes on to propose a new philosophical conception of leadership--one that is values-driven, change-oriented, and developmental. Fairholm contends that past theories fail to consider group values as a constraint on leadership performance, and he proposes the constitutional values of respect for life, freedom, happiness, justice, and unity as the basis for a suitable philosophical leadership model. In short, leaders make a priority of one or more of these founding values in addition to any others used in setting their organization's vision. In turn, that vision is the basis of a leader-set organizational culture that applies these values to interpersonal relationships. Values Leadership uses current literature and independent research to provide the rationale for this new thinking on leadership. Divided into three major sections, this twelve-chapter volume reviews the current values-oriented leadership theories; proposes a philosophy of what leaders should think about and value in performing this important, innovative task into the twenty-first century. It details some of the new technologies modern leaders must adopt in striving for excellence in their leadership. The last chapter defines and elaborates the results sought by values leadership theory. Scholars and students in management, public administration, organizational behavior, and psychology as well as professionals in management roles will find this evolving theory of leadership a unique tool for the tasks and missions of the next century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video is the main driver of bandwidth use, accounting for over 80 per cent of consumer Internet traffic. Video compression is a critical component of many of the available multimedia applications, it is necessary for storage or transmission of digital video over today's band-limited networks. The majority of this video is coded using international standards developed in collaboration with ITU-T Study Group and MPEG. The MPEG family of video coding standards begun on the early 1990s with MPEG-1, developed for video and audio storage on CD-ROMs, with support for progressive video. MPEG-2 was standardized in 1995 for applications of video on DVD, standard and high definition television, with support for interlaced and progressive video. MPEG-4 part 2, also known as MPEG-2 video, was standardized in 1999 for applications of low- bit rate multimedia on mobile platforms and the Internet, with the support of object-based or content based coding by modeling the scene as background and foreground. Since MPEG-1, the main video coding standards were based on the so-called macroblocks. However, research groups continued the work beyond the traditional video coding architectures and found that macroblocks could limit the performance of the compression when using high-resolution video. Therefore, in 2013 the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) also known and H.265, was released, with a structure similar to H.264/AVC but using coding units with more flexible partitions than the traditional macroblocks. HEVC has greater flexibility in prediction modes and transform block sizes, also it has a more sophisticated interpolation and de blocking filters. In 2006 the VC-1 was released. VC-1 is a video codec implemented by Microsoft and the Microsoft Windows Media Video (VMW) 9 and standardized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). In 2017 the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) released a call for proposals for a new video coding standard initially called Beyond the HEVC, Future Video Coding (FVC) or known as Versatile Video Coding (VVC). VVC is being built on top of HEVC for application on Standard Dynamic Range (SDR), High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 360° Video. The VVC is planned to be finalized by 2020. This book presents the new VVC, and updates on the HEVC. The book discusses the advances in lossless coding and covers the topic of screen content coding. Technical topics discussed include: Beyond the High Efficiency Video CodingHigh Efficiency Video Coding encoderScreen contentLossless and visually lossless coding algorithmsFast coding algorithmsVisual quality assessmentOther screen content coding algorithmsOverview of JPEG Series

Book excerpt: A new kind of manifesto for the working woman, with tips on building wealth and finding balance, as well as inspiration for harnessing the freedom and power that comes from a breadwinning mindset. Nearly half of working women in the United States are now their household's main breadwinner. And yet, the majority of women still aren't being brought up to think like breadwinners. In fact, they're actually discouraged--by institutional bias and subconscious beliefs--from building their own wealth, pursuing their full earning potential, and providing for themselves and others financially. The result is that women earn less, owe more, and have significantly less money saved and invested for the future than men do. And if women do end up the main breadwinners, they've been conditioned to feel reluctant and unprepared to manage the role. In Think Like a Breadwinner, financial expert Jennifer Barrett reframes what it really means to be a breadwinner. By dismantling the narrative that women don't--and shouldn't--take full financial responsibility to create the lives they want, she reveals not only the importance of women building their own wealth, but also the freedom and power that comes with it. With concrete practical tools, as well as examples from her own journey, Barrett encourages women to reclaim, rejoice in, and aspire to the role of breadwinner like never before.

This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Values are inescapable. They pervade and shape our psychology, our agency, and our lives as reflective and self-knowing subjects. This book explores the crucial ways in which values figure within reflection and thereby shape our theoretical and practical lives, against the backdrop of an expressivist moral psychology that is sensitive to the vicissitudes of valuing. Combining a discussion of the role that values play within reflection with a critique of a range of influential contemporary views in moral psychology and the theory of agency, Dunn shows how such views obscure or distort the nature of that role and that there is a ‘natural fit’ between an expressivist account of values and the best account of the role of values in the lives of reflective agents. Writers discussed include Simon Blackburn, Michael E. Bratman, Donald Davidson, Harry Frankfurt, Christine Korsgaard, Thomas Nagel and J. David Velleman. The book is also an important addition to the literature on self-knowledge. Dunn argues that, by reasoning about truth and values, we possess a unique, non-observational way of coming to know our own minds and hearts, together with what we are going to make happen in the world. The discussion criticizes recent contributions to the theory of self-knowledge by Richard Moran and J. David Velleman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Officer is a Leader: Transforming Leadership in Police, Justice, and Public Safety, authored by leadership expert Terry Anderson and several well known leaders in the law enforcement and criminal justice profession, responds to the need for a comprehensive leadership development model for the education and training of police, justice and public safety supervisors, managers and front line officers. He examines how leadership development has a profound impact on the morale and performance of individual officers, teams, and organizations, illustrating in depth and detail how police and other justice and public safety leaders (in corrections, fire, customs, immigration, security, courts, etc.) can implement the Transforming Leadership process, skills, and principles. The recent focus (during the past 10 years) on community policing initiatives has made competency based leadership skills training essential for front line officers. The author's innovative contribution is a focus on the necessity to build "a leadership organization" before - and to an extent, while - you move ahead into building a "learning organization" that is responsive to community and internal organizational needs. The personal, team, and organization development skills discussed in this book are necessary pre-requisites to successful implementation of any neighborhood or community policing initiatives. Every Officer is a Leader: Transforming Leadership in Police, Justice, and Public Safety provides a model for integrating other models into a holistic leadership development framework. It furnishes a map for developing critical leadership skills with self-assessment, includes the developmental aspects of leadership expert Terry Anderson's previous book on Transforming Leadership, and applies them to law enforcement and criminal justice. Anderson and his contributing authors add clarity, perspective, and examples to show how individual leaders can develop themselves, and one another, into high-performance team leaders and officers who motivate others to respond to issues that affect the morale, health, and safety of the communities in which they serve. This new focus adds a perspective on security issues that affect police, justice and public safety organizations.
