Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: Good, Bahir Dar University (College of Agriculture and Environmental Science), course: Agricultural economics, language: English, abstract: This study was aimed at analyzing value chain of Groundnut in Pawi Woreda, Metekel Zone, Beni-shangul Gumuz Region with specific objectives of identifying groundnut value chain and examining the performance of actors in the chain; analyzing the determinants of groundnut supply to the market in the study area; and identifying and map marketing channels. The data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data for this study were collected from 155 farmers, 30 traders and 25 consumers through using questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and Econometrics models were used to analyze the collected data. Results show that the main groundnut value chain actors in the study area groundnut producers/farmer, input suppliers, local assembler, wholesalers, retailers, Processers and consumers. It is also found out that groundnut passes through several intermediaries with little value being added before reaching the end users. The chain is governed by wholesalers and Processers who have capital advantage over the other chain actors. Therefore, farmers are forced to capture a lower share of profit margin. The result of OLS regression model indicated that marketable supply is significantly affected by sex of household head, age of household head, agricultural extension service, owner ship of transport facility, distance of the nearest market and quantity of groundnut produced. Therefore, policy aiming at increasing farmers’ access to modern inputs, developing and improving infrastructure, gender consideration, and improving extension system are recommended to accelerate the chain’s development.

Book excerpt: Value-added agriculture has attracted considerable attention in recent years as a means to stabilize farm incomes since the traditional selling system, commodities pushing into the marketplace, largely isolated from the consumer demands and preferences and products may often be sold into a crowded market. As a result, the traditional marketing system undermines the farm income that could have gained by farm households. However, value chain promotion and concept builds on the basic premise that only the market success of farmers and are capable of providing a sustainable solution to the problem of instable farm income and productivity. Therefore, this book presents the value chain analysis of groundnut. In this book, factors influencing groundnut productivity, marketing channel choice and its effect on gross income of producers are evaluated. Moreover, groundnut value chain performances including different actors based on ILO approach are analyzed. The analysis should help the development practitioners and donors who are working in the area of agricultural value chain as well as who would like to grasp the concept of value chain in agriculture.

Book excerpt: Dissemination of legume technologies to Sub-Saharan farmers by NGOs and research institutes has stimulated farmers to grow grain legumes, thereby providing farmers with substantial harvest and income. During the second quarter of 2012, N2AFRICA a project that provides farmers in Africa with technologies to grow grain legumes extended their project activities to Sierra Leone. N2AFRICA provided Sierra Leonean small scale farmers with the following grain legumes; groundnuts, cowpeas and soybeans, because these legumes are rich in protein and have the ability to fix nitrogen to the soil. After production some of these legumes are consumed by the farmers and the rest is sold. Therefore N2AFRICA decided to research the value chains of the mentioned legumes from inputs to the final consumer. This research investigates the value chains of the groundnut, cowpea and soybean in Sierra Leone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The groundnut value chain is of major economic, social and political importance in Senegal. Most rural households grow the crop, and its transport, storage or processing is a key source of nonfarm employment in both formal and informal enterprises. Senegal's groundnut sector was originally developed by colonial authorities, using a monopoly over exports to control the domestic market. For groundnuts in Senegal, the French-owned oil processor was nationalized to form SONACOS in 1975, which proved increasingly costly to operate and was eventually privatized in 2005 to form SUNEOR in 2007. That too has suffered increasing losses and in January 2010 the government finally ended the monopoly system, allowing farmers to sell to competing firms for either direct export or processing. Despite turmoil in the groundnut processing sector, groundnut production itself remains a mainstay of the rural economy. This report builds on a number of previous studies to inform ongoing changes in the sector. Most notably, we build on the diagnostic analysis of the groundnut value chain that was conducted in 2014 (World Bank 2015) and addressed a set of key reform proposals. The focus of this report is detailed in its Terms of Reference (Annex 4).

As it produces reasonable yields even under conditions of drought and low soil fertility, it is also a climate-smart crop. Previously underutilized, BGN is the subject of growing interest among researchers and consumers for its balanced nutritional profile. Indigenous consumers of BGN report medicinal benefits from the plant; however, such knowledge is at risk of being lost with the urbanization and changing lifestyles of younger generations. To date, there is no comprehensive resource on the Bambara groundnut, despite market demand for plant proteins around the globe. Authored by scientists who have researched and developed patents using BGN, Bambara Groundnut: Utilization and Future Prospects aims to fill this gap. The text provides in-depth coverage on breeding, food and feed utilization, medicinal benefits and future research prospects. Drawing on both indigenous knowledge and cutting-edge research, Bambara Groundnut is the first book to fully explore the potential of this remarkable crop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book shares impact stories - testimonies from various value chain actors who have been part of the Tropical Legumes (TL) projects, over the past twelve years. The Tropical Legumes projects led by ICRISAT in three parts (TLI, TLII and TLIII), constitute a major international initiative supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and jointly implemented by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) partners from Sub-Saharan Africa and India. The project developed improved cultivars of common bean, cowpea, chickpea and groundnut (but also soya bean and pigeon pea cultivars in its initial phases) and delivers their seed to smallholders in BMGF-focus areas. It also strengthens the NARS and CGIAR's breeding programs and seed platforms to enhance their ability to deliver high and sustained outputs to smallholder farmers. The book compiles the experiences of a diversity of actors within the grain legume value chains, with a focus on groundnut and common beans in Tanzania and Uganda, groundnut and cowpea in Nigeria, and groundnut in Ghana. All stakeholders involved share their thoughts on being part of a decade-long development project family. National agricultural research institutes, knowledge brokering organizations, NGOs, public and private seed companies, agro-dealers, individual seed entrepreneurs, farm-implement makers, farmer cooperatives, farmer groups, individual men and women farmers, middlemen, processors, traders and consumers were all involved in this project, and as such this book provides valuable insights for development workers, technical staff, and project managers. Book excerpt: This two-volume set discusses recent approaches and technological innovations for sustainable agriculture in smallholder farming systems impacted by climate change. The systems covered include crop-based agricultural production, as well as aquaculture and livestock production as related systems using similar techniques to combat food security issues brought about by climate change and resource overuse. The chapters detail innovations involving crop diversification, soil resilience management, geoinformatics and land suitability monitoring for smart farming, information technology in livestock production, and nutrient resource management in fishery aquaculture. Researchers, practitioners and industries will be able to use this information to implement socially and economically sustainable practices to achieve food security in impoverished areas vulnerable to climate change, while also learning about the rapid evolution in information technology that is applicable for and available to small holder farmers. Volume 1 focuses on current innovations in agricultural and livestock practices in response to climate change. It covers the technological challenges, approaches and mitigation strategies encountered by both scholars and practitioners working in livestock and agricultural production systems impacted by climate change.
