Book excerpt: This article reports on a cluster-randomized controlled trial conducted in 120 villages in rural Burkina Faso evaluating a multifaceted intervention (SELEVER) that seeks to increase poultry production by delivering training in conjunction with the strengthening of village-level institutions providing veterinary and credit services to poultry farmers. The intervention is evaluated in a sample of 1,080 households surveyed following two years of program implementation. Households exposed to the intervention significantly increase their use of poultry inputs (veterinary services, enhanced feeds, and deworming), and report more poultry sold and higher revenue; however, there is no evidence of an increase in profits. This evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that the return to inputs in the poultry market may not be sufficient to counterbalance the market costs of these inputs.

Book excerpt: The Sultanate of Oman is experiencing a nutrition transition, characterized by shifts in diet, lifestyle and disease burden. The National Nutrition Strategy of Oman 2014-2050 and the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy SARDS 2040 have emphasized the importance of adequate intake of fruits and vegetables while decreasing the consumption of energy-dense foods. FAO collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) and Zubair Small Enterprises Centre (Zubair SEC) to conduct an inclusive Nutrition Sensitive Value Chain Analysis (NSVCA). The geographical focus was on Al Batinah North, one of the main agricultural governorates in Oman. Two commodities were selected by MAFWR and the Ministry of Health based on a scoring method: papaya and carrots. This NSVCA aimed at mapping the current landscape of constraints and opportunities in supply and demand of safe and nutritious food commodities across these two value chains. It focuses on SMEs related to food and agriculture, farmer organizations, smallholders and other actors along the value chains. The NSVCA contributes mainly to SO1, SO3 and SO4 through improved knowledge of the food system in Oman and providing a variety of evidence based intervention and investment opportunities along the value chain. The findings will allow decision-makers to identify specific policy interventions which will leverage the potential of these value chains for both income generation and better nutrition outcomes.

Book excerpt: This report provides rapid assessments of the earthquake’s effects on agriculture, specifically greenhouse-based tomato production in Samandağ (Hatay), fishing in Hatay’s coastal districts (Samandağ, Arsuz, İskenderun, Dörtyol), and milk production in Elbistan (Kahramanmaraş). It compares pre- and post-earthquake value chain functions to identify needed interventions and propose strategies for sustainability and resilience. The evaluation involved a desk review, field visits to affected districts, six focus group discussions, and 20 key interviews with diverse stakeholders. Key findings indicated a complete breakdown of the entire supply chain in the two months following the earthquakes across all three sectors. The report recommends key strategic interventions to bolster the sustainability – economic, social, and environmental – and resilience of producers within these three value chains across the two significantly affected provinces. The report defines three major outcomes: (i) enhanced economic sustainability and heightened competitiveness; (ii) social sustainability focusing on gender equality and improved livelihoods of vulnerable groups; and (iii) enhanced environmental sustainability of the value chains. To achieve these three major outcomes for each of the value chains, 33 interventions are proposed.

Book excerpt: Agricultural production needs to grow by 60 percent between 2005 and 2050 to feed the world’s growing population, which is expected to reach 9.3 billion by 2050. 6 billion out of 9.3 will live in urban areas, roughly meaning some part of 3 billion rural habitants (who are farmers) will feed 9.3 billion people, with limited land and water and against challenges of changing climate. Every year, USD 83 billion (in 2009 USD) should be invested in the developing world to double their agricultural production. UNDP, considering the demand from regional governments and international community, initiated a project for a tripartite regional consortium in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in agro-food industry. The first phase is concluded in October 2015 when the Memorandum of Understanding establishing the Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan (AKT) Agro-food Industry Consortium signed by the governments; and the AKT Agro-food Industry Consortium launched at Dushanbe in October 2015. As part of the Feasibility & Build Up Phase, a comprehensive feasibility study started immediately after the launch. This analytical and diagnostic work provides the most detailed assessment of agro-food value chains in in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to date, and identifies a set of concrete investment areas at the micro, meso and macro levels.

Uncertainties inherent to these contexts can further undermine the relevance, efficiency and effectiveness of agri-food value chain development interventions, programmes and projects.Investigating the connection between sustainable, resilient agrifood value chain development and the unique characteristics of the highly volatile situations in which they are operating, these practitioner guidelines propose a four-step approach for selection, analysis and design of agrifood value chains in conflict prone and conflict affected contexts. Book excerpt: This baseline report examines the Refugee Agricultural Value Chains for Economic Self-reliance (RAVES) project in Uganda. The programme adopts an innovative approach, with a focus on providing sustainable long-term solutions beyond humanitarian assistance that mitigate the negative effects of displacement, uplift refugees, and support host communities. The approach allows the refugees to contribute to the economy of the host community without creating social tension. The project supports both refugee and host communities to engage in high value crop value chains, linking them to private sector actors. This baseline report focuses on Uganda and is implemented in Kiryandongo district among both refugees and host communities. The district is predominantly agriculture based and has the biophysical conditions suitable for growing passion fruit. Our analysis suggests that the randomization between treatment and control was fully successful in host communities but less so in the refugees’ settlements. The variations we find between host communities and refugees’ settlements when it comes to demographics, food security, endowment of land and constraints in agricultural production hint towards large structural differences between the two groups. This calls for tailored approaches such as a gender-specific one to address the two communities' specific obstacles to participation in commercial value chains.
