Book excerpt: The proceedings of June 1993 international symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia, called specifically to develop and standardized evaluation procedures for non-destructive methods of testing pavements. The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. Also includes a history of the quest for a standard and the status of that effort. Reproduced from typescripts. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Synopsis Pavement Evaluation Concepts Using Nondestructive Structural Evaluation and Pavement Condition Index by : Jim W. Hall
Download or read book Pavement Evaluation Concepts Using Nondestructive Structural Evaluation and Pavement Condition Index written by Jim W. Hall and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A logical method for pavement evaluation utilizing both nondestructive procedures for structural analysis and pavement condition distress to identify maintenance needs is presented. Alternatives for maintaining desired serviceability are categorized as routine maintenance, major maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. The alternatives are selected based on levels of the pavement condition index and results of nondestructive testing structural evaluation. A flowchart outlining the decision process of identifying appropriate alternatives is presented. Specific treatments are selected as a function of the pavement type and the severity level of the distress. Keywords: Airfield pavement; Condition survey; Roads and streets.

Book excerpt: Minnesota has a large network of aggregate roads. The majority of the system is maintained by counties and townships. Some of the aggregate roads need to be upgraded with a sealed surface for dust control or to provide a smoother driving experience, as well as for local economic development. Local road officials are often faced with the responsibility of upgrading the roads with a limited budget. Light surface treatments (LSTs) are considered an economical alternative to the conventional upgrade approaches using hot-mixasphalt (HMA) or concrete pavements. The currently used methods in Minnesota for the structural design of LSTs for aggregate roads were originally developed for structural design of flexible pavements. This research evaluated the design methods that can be used to design LSTs for aggregate roads. The methods evaluated include the MnDOT granular equivalent (GE) method and the MnDOT mechanistic-empirical method (MnPave design software), which are used in Minnesota, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) flexible pavement design method and South Dakota aggregate road design method, which are practiced in other places in the United States. The results include a discussion of the applicable situations for each method. The research team also conducted a survey that was distributed to the county engineers in Minnesota to document their experiences with LSTs. Recommendations for improving the current design methods when applied to LSTs on aggregate roads are suggested based on the survey results.
