Book excerpt: Aluminum oxide(Al2O3) particles of known size distribution were cast into a solid propellant which burned at temperatures less than the melting point of Al2O3. Thus, particles of known size distribution existed at the nozzle inlet and in the plume. Malvern particle sizing instruments were used to make measurements at these two location using a windowed subscale motor and the results were compared to the known distribution. In the motor, measurements were limited due to disruptive flow from the window purge gas. However, the unaffected larger modes were properly measured. In the plume, the measurements of the modes were quite accurate, but low signal strength resulted in some inaccuracies for the mass contained in each mode. A phase Doppler particle analyzer was adapted to an existing plume probe. Initial measurements at two radial locations were in good agreement with the expected size distribution.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
Book Synopsis Automatic Particle Sizing from Rocket Motor Holograms by :
Download or read book Automatic Particle Sizing from Rocket Motor Holograms written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microscopic particles within an optical hologram reconstruction have been successfully measured using an image digitizer and a PC/AT computer. The hologram was recorded during a test burn of some solid rocket fuel and captured a 2 in x 2 in volume of burning particles as they lift from the fuel surface during combustion. The computer processes the digitized images using feature identification algorithms and sizing in the feature's horizontal dimension, its vertical dimension and area. The operation of the algorithms have been validated against calibration objects. Statistical tests show that about 1,300 particles from several image frames are required to obtain a representative size distribution. Overlying speckle degrades the resolution of the image and can be reduced by a variety of techniques. The performance of these speckle-reduction techniques has been measured and compared in the areas of speckle reduction, loss of resolution, and processing time. Program sizes and processing times have been compared for both FORTRAN and C-language versions of the processing program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical particle s1z1ng is undoubtedly a fascinating field of research of the utmost practical importance. In the Universe fluids are nearly everywhere, and when they occur they almost invariably contain particles. Inside our bodies we can take the example of blood transporting a vi tal procession of red and white cells. Around us, we can find various particles in the air we breathe, bubbles in the champagne or the soda we drink, or natural and artificial (polluting!) particles in the lakes we swim in. Industrial processes and systems are also concerned with particles, from pulverized coal flames to fluidized beds, in a range of applications involving rocket exhausts, pneuma tic transport and more generally the infinite realm of mul tiphase situations. Such an obviously vast field would require a whole volume like this one merely to attempt to describe it superficially. To be sure, we would need a scientific Prevert to catalogue such an endless inventory. Finally, even outside our terrestrial spaceship particles can be detected in alien atmospheres or between stars. Theorists will enjoy analyzing the richness of light/particle interact. ion, a subject which is very far from being exhausted. Experimental researchers will love designing and studying various probing instruments with a laser source at the input and a computer at the output, two requisites of today' s technological revolution.
Book Synopsis Measurement of Particle Size in a Gas-particle Flow by an Optical Transmission Test by : RICHARD A. DOBBINS
Download or read book Measurement of Particle Size in a Gas-particle Flow by an Optical Transmission Test written by RICHARD A. DOBBINS and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental method of determining the volumeto-surface mean diameter, D32, in a gas-particle flow is described. The method involves the use of an experimental determination of optical transmission and the use of the primary dependence of the average scattering coefficient on D32. An error analysis was performed to show the manner in which errors propagate in the data reduction process. The optical depth due to particles produced in the gas-particle flow resulting from solid propellant rocket motors using metallic fuel additives was found to vary strongly with particle size. The theory is applied to experimental data recently published and the provisional results between actual D32 and the value yielded by transmission tests are considered very encouraging. Instrumentation is described to perform transmission tests on rocket exhaust gases where particles are strong emitters of thermal radiation and where the optical depth of the particle cloud is moderate. Book Synopsis Measurement of Size Distribution of Submicron Particles Using New Laser Diagnostics by : James F. Driscoll
Download or read book Measurement of Size Distribution of Submicron Particles Using New Laser Diagnostics written by James F. Driscoll and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The one year research program described here was a direct extension of work completed during the 1977 AFOSR/ASEE Summer Faculty Research program at AFRPL. During that program the author and Dr. David Mann, AFRPL, performed the first is situ size measurements of submicron alumina (Al2O3) particles that have been published to date. The new laser diagnostic technique used, Diffusion Broadening Spectroscopy, represents a new advance in the state-of-the-art of submicron particle sizing. The goal of the research described herein was to develop a data reduction procedure to extend the applicability of the technique, so that size distribution half width can be measured, in addition to particle mean diameter. The computer routine was developed to determine particle mean diameter and size distribution half width, given light scattering data obtained at two scattering angles. Sensitivity of the results was investigated and feasibility of future use of the technique in rocket motors and plumes was deduced. (Author).
