Book Synopsis The News at the Ends of the Earth by : Hester Blum
Download or read book The News at the Ends of the Earth written by Hester Blum and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Sir John Franklin's doomed 1845 search for the Northwest Passage to early twentieth-century sprints to the South Pole, polar expeditions produced an extravagant archive of documents that are as varied as they are engaging. As the polar ice sheets melt, fragments of this archive are newly emergent. In The News at the Ends of the Earth Hester Blum examines the rich, offbeat collection of printed ephemera created by polar explorers. Ranging from ship newspapers and messages left in bottles to menus and playbills, polar writing reveals the seamen wrestling with questions of time, space, community, and the environment. Whether chronicling weather patterns or satirically reporting on penguin mischief, this writing provided expedition members with a set of practices to help them survive the perpetual darkness and harshness of polar winters. The extreme climates these explorers experienced is continuous with climate change today. Polar exploration writing, Blum contends, offers strategies for confronting and reckoning with the extreme environment of the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan,Scott Zieher discovered a pile of photographs among theeffects of a recently deceased tenant. These photographs, presented for the first time in Band of Bikers, offer anintimate portrait of a group of gay bikers in the city and thewoods, and a touching snapshot of an entire generation atits carefree zenith. Newly aware of muscle and biker magazines and their heavy-handederoticism, photographer and photographed brimwith a subtly vibrant, chromatic pride. The photographs asa whole bring into focus a brief, specific period of relativeinnocence, when middle-of-the-road Americans more oftenthan not failed to perceive the homoerotic undertones oftheir most heterosexual of institutions. With conceptual lightcast by issues ranging from anonymity in homosexuality andunderground motorcycle chic, to vernacular photography'spop-culture ramifications, a warm and generous spiritof camaraderie pervades this subterranean survey. Likea real-world set forScorpio Rising casually captured byan unpretentious extra, presented as Band of Bikers andaccompanied by an essay by Zieher, this found cache ofold-school, leather party snapshots attains archeologicalsignificance.
Book Synopsis The Private Presses by : Colin Franklin
Download or read book The Private Presses written by Colin Franklin and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renaissance of printing is generally accepted as starting in 1891, the date of the first publication from William Morris's Kelmscott Press. In that year, Morris printed his own Story of the Glittering Plain, so beginning a movement that was to continue until 1939. The author begins his survey with the Daniel Press, started by the Provost of Worcester College, Oxford, and traces the development of the private movement in printing which flourished between 1891 and 1914: these presses include Kelmscott, Ashendene, Essex House, Vale and Doves. Between the wars in Britain three presses stand out: the Gregynog Press, Shakespeare Head, and Golden Cockerel. This book is the only one of its kind to trace the history and development of these presses, publishers of some of the finest examples of printing of English books that has ever been known.

Download or read book Printed Ephemera written by John Lewis and published by ACC Distribution. This book was released on 1990 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was first published in 1962 it was not only the first book on the subject, but John Lewis unwittingly invented the term 'Printed Ephemera'. This is virtually a facsimile of that original 1962 edition but with many of the former monochrome subjects now printed in full colour and with a new foreword by the Author. The book surveys the art of the jobbing printer, from Caxton's time to the 1960's, by studying the changing uses of type and letter forms in English and American printing. Handbills, certificates, tickets and trade cards are all illustrated showing the changes in design of type faces and the changing relationships between text and illustration. The book contains a fully illustrated chronological glossary of type and a fully classified index under six headings: General; Artists, Designers and Typographers; Engravers and Lithographers; Printers; Type-founders; Type designers; Type-setters; Type faces. 'Printed Ephemera' is a classic book and the essential work of reference on a subject which has become increasingly popular and collectable. Many Printed Ephemera societies now exist in countries as far apart as the U.S.A., Canada and Australia.
