Book excerpt: Written by the creators of the popular website, this rigorously fact-checked, accessible, and fully illustrated guide is essential for anyone with a pussy. If the clitoris and penis are the same size on average, why is the word “small” in the definition of clitoris but strangely missing from the definition of penis? Sex probably doesn't cause yeast infections? But racism probably does cause BV? Why is masturbating so awesome? How hairy are butt cracks . . . generally? Why is labiaplasty on a global astronomical rise? Does egg freezing really work? Should I stick an egg-shaped rock up there or nah? There is still a shocking lack of accurate, accessible information about pussies and many esteemed medical sources seem to contradict each other. Pussypedia solves that with extensive reviews of peer-reviewed science that address old myths, confusing inconsistencies, and the influence of gender narratives on scientific research––always in simple, joyful language. Through over 30 chapters, Pussypedia not only gives the reader information, but teaches them how to read science, how to consider information in its context, and how to accept what we don't know rather than search for conclusions. It also weaves in personal anecdotes from the authors and their friends––sometimes funny, sometimes sad, often cringe-worthy, and always extremely personal––to do away with shame and encourage curiosity, exploration, and agency. A gift for your shy niece, your angsty teenager, your confused boyfriend, or yourself. Our generation's Our Bodies, Ourselves, with a healthy dose of fun.

Book excerpt: In 2015, building on the advances of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals that include an explicit commitment to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. However, enormous gaps remain between what is achievable in human health and where global health stands today, and progress has been both incomplete and unevenly distributed. In order to meet this goal, a deliberate and comprehensive effort is needed to improve the quality of health care services globally. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm: Improving Health Care Worldwide focuses on one particular shortfall in health care affecting global populations: defects in the quality of care. This study reviews the available evidence on the quality of care worldwide and makes recommendations to improve health care quality globally while expanding access to preventive and therapeutic services, with a focus in low-resource areas. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm emphasizes the organization and delivery of safe and effective care at the patient/provider interface. This study explores issues of access to services and commodities, effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and equity. Focusing on front line service delivery that can directly impact health outcomes for individuals and populations, this book will be an essential guide for key stakeholders, governments, donors, health systems, and others involved in health care.

This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An optimal female reproductive tract (FRT) microbiome represents a cornerstone for successful reproductive and sexual health. Although understanding the link between the microbiota and our health is the focus of a growing number of research programs and research has advanced in the last decade, the FRT microbiome remains relatively poorly defined. This is despite it being one of the most critical factors impacting fertility and the health of the future generation. Important gaps in our knowledge remain about women-specific microbial niches, such as the lower FRT. The vaginal microbiome of healthy women is almost exclusively dominated by Lactobacillus species, making these species synonymous with vaginal health. Largely thanks to their capacity to produce high levels of lactic acid, lactobacilli are thought to inhibit most invading bacterial and viral pathogens. Nonetheless, the dogma that all Lactobacillus species are key beneficial species in the vaginal niche has been questioned, based on the association with disease for some of the major players in the niche, for example L. iners, particularly in non-European or Caucasian cohorts. Further, the ability of other (mostly anaerobic) species besides lactobacilli, to maintain similar homeostasis in the vaginal niche raises the question of what we define as optimal or healthy vaginal microbiota. Answering this question is essential since a non-optimal or dysbiotic vaginal microbiome has been linked to the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), infertility, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. To confront these healthcare challenges we should be able to distinguish between an optimal and non-optimal microbiome. With the advance of sequence-based technologies, as well as other omics methodologies, including metaproteomics, metabolomics and culturomics, we are now able to begin to correlate the presence, as well as the activities, of specific organisms and microbial communities with health or disease. However, we are only beginning to understand the complexity of interactions between bacterial community members with each other and the human host. A better understanding of these relationships within this specialized environmental niche and in relation to female sexual and reproductive health is critical for the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics to create and maintain an optimal FRT microbiome.

Book excerpt: These consolidated guidelines on HIV prevention, testing, treatment, service delivery and monitoring bring together existing and new clinical and programmatic recommendations across different ages, populations and settings, bringing together all relevant WHO guidance on HIV produced since 2016. It serves as an update to the previous edition of the consolidated guidelines on HIV. These guidelines continue to be structured along the continuum of HIV care. Information on new combination prevention approaches, HIV testing, ARV regimens and treatment monitoring are included. There is a new chapter on advanced HIV disease that integrates updated guidance on the management of important HIV comorbidities, including cryptococcal disease, histoplasmosis and tuberculosis. The chapter on general HIV care, contains a new section on palliative care and pain management, and up to date information on treatment of several neglected tropical diseases, such as visceral leishmaniasis and Buruli ulcer. New recommendations for screening and treating of cervical pre-cancer lesions in women living with HIV are also addressed in this chapter. Guidance on service delivery was expanded to help the implementation and strengthening the HIV care cascade. Importantly, this guidance emphasizes the need for differentiated approaches to care for people who are established on ART, such as reduced frequency of clinic visits, use of multi-month drug dispensing and implementation of community ART distribution. The adoption of these efficiencies is essential to improve the quality of care of people receiving treatment and reduce the burden on health facilities, particularly in resource limited settings.

Book excerpt: There is a significant deficiency among contemporary medicine practices reflected by experts making medical decisions for a large proportion of the population for which no or minimal data exists. Fortunately, our capacity to procure and apply such information is rapidly rising. As medicine becomes more individualized, the implementation of health IT and data interoperability become essential components to delivering quality healthcare. Quality Assurance in the Era of Individualized Medicine is a collection of innovative research on the methods and utilization of digital readouts to fashion an individualized therapy instead of a mass-population-directed strategy. While highlighting topics including assistive technologies, patient management, and clinical practices, this book is ideally designed for health professionals, doctors, nurses, hospital management, medical administrators, IT specialists, data scientists, researchers, academicians, and students.
