Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel Letters From New Zealand, Australia and Africa Saturday, january 4, 1913. - This is written in the Pacific ocean, on the ship Sonoma, two days out of Sydney, Australia, where we expect to land next Mon day. We have been on the ship seventeen days, and the passengers and servants seem as familiar as people with whom we have associated many years. In the main, we have had a pleasant voyage, although the weather was somewhat boisterous the first few days out of San Francisco. We stopped eight hours at Honolulu, and five hours at Pago Pago, in the Samoa Islands. There was an elaborate celebration on board on Christ mas day, which included a big dinner, speeches, and a dance, and we also had a similar New Year celebration, although we actually had no New Year's day. At a late hour on the 3lst of December we crossed the l80th meridian, and, when we awoke the following morning, the date was January 2, 1913. Ships sailing westward drop a day on crossing the 180th meridian, and ships going eastward add a day. In traveling toward the sun, the day increases in length, and, in a trip around the world, this increase amounts to exactly twenty four hours. Every day we set our watches back from twenty to thirty minutes, and when we reach Canton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Southern Cross, or Travels in Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Samoa, and Other Pacific Islands Of frivolous ones. To an observant person nothing can be more instructive than travel; in fact it may be said to be the only royal road to learning. Travel is a magician, - it both enchants and dis enchants; Since while it delights the eye, it often' proves the winding-sheet of many cherished illu sions. There is always some bitter to be tasted with every sweet; but even the bee which finds a thorn on every rose comes home laden with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel and Talk, Vol. 1 of 2: My Hundred Thousand Miles of Travel Through America, Australia, Tasmania, Canada, New Zealand, Ceylon, and the Paradises of the Pacific These volumes speak for themselves: those who are interested in me and my travels and observations will read them, and the others can leave them alone. Writers are sometimes vain enough to imagine that what amuses them must necessarily amuse other people I am under no such delusion, and am there fore quite prepared to receive with resignation and meekness the neglect of the public and the strictures of the Press, or vice vend. I have yielded, perhaps rashly, to the representa tions of my publishers, and admitted two portraits. For the first I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. Frederick A. Atkins, editor of 'the Young Man, ' and for the second to the eminent photographers, Messrs. Russell Sons of Baker Street. These volumes only include my travels outside Europe from 1885 to 1895. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel and Talk, Vol. 2 of 2: My Hundred Thousand Miles of Travel Through America, Australia, Tasmania, Canada, New Zealand, Ceylon, and the Paradises of the Pacific MY third voyage - I had just written so far how little man knows, especially on the ocean, what a day may bring forth (or bring up) As I drew near to New York Harbour, I plucked up courage to look back at my diary. There were awful gaps in those five days. I knew what they meant. Kathleen Who was Kathleen Once more I look over the Side of our giant ship along with the rest. We are still waiting for the mails off Queenstown - the sea is like glass - Kathleen, in a boat far down below, looks up, holding out Irish lace, shawls, &c., Hibernian textiles. Buxom, merry, saucy, pretty Kathleen, with your clear, ringing Voice. There are other red-checked, dark-eyed Irish girls with you, and a swain or two sorting the flounces and tippets - but you are the queen of barterers. Here's a fine piece Of lace for that lady beside you. Catch the rope, gentleman I'll position the basket. Pull it up; let the ladies see. Pass it round look at the pattem - the arms of Brian Boru, as I'm alive! And the blessed shamrock it will bring luck to the lady! What will you give? You shall take it for 355. 205. N o, sir I couldn't get the price of a turkey out of it. There, 303. No! Well, there's a good-looking gentleman beside you he shall have it for 281. I'm giving it away, sir, to you, because you're so handsome. Won't have it? Hope you'll be better looking next time. Well, there, lady, 2 to you! Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Axe and Rope in the New Zealand Alps The author trusts that the publication of the same in book form, together with a map of the locality and a few photographic reproductions, will supply a want in the shape of a guide-book to the Alpine mountain district which is already beginning to be felt by tourists in New Zealand; and he hopes that the con tents may not prove uninteresting to the general public, more especially to Swiss and Caucasian climbers, few of whom are perhaps aware of the extent and nature of the New Zealand Alpine chain.
