Book Synopsis Dartmouth Veterans by : Phillip C. Schaefer
Download or read book Dartmouth Veterans written by Phillip C. Schaefer and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are tales of what it was like for young men to go from the bucolic hills of New Hampshire to a land wracked by war and violence. The result is a collection of more than fifty accounts, showing the variety of experiences and reactions to this dramatic period in American history. Some soldiers were drafted, some volunteered; some supported the war, but many turned against it. Common to all the stories is the way in which war changes men, for good and ill, and the way in which the Vietnam experience colored so much of the rest of these writers' lives.
Book Synopsis Riverace... Cold Warrior by : Thomas J. Highstreet
Download or read book Riverace... Cold Warrior written by Thomas J. Highstreet and published by Harry. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They called him Chief. After almost seventeen years in the United States Navy, the United States Army wanted him for duty in Vietnam. A lifetime of an association with boats from Chris Craft in his home town in Michigan, to years at sea and ashore with the Navy, he was now about to jump to the Officer level in the Army from a non-commissioned petty officer rank in the Navy. But boats would continue to be the major factor in his life as he also moved from Cold Warrior to Hot Warrior in an advisory role fro the South Vietnamese, and along the rivers and marshes and jungle of an Asian country at war. There would be live ammunition and dead soldiers, but Thomas J. Highstreet, Warrant Officer 1, wasn't going to waste his energy as a newly appointed warrant officer on matters not within his control. He had only a few years left in his military career and had no intention of allowing them to slip by without a total commitment to the duty he had accepted. He fully believed he would not die trying, he would live doing. He was ready, and, he would survive. He was a warrior.
Book Synopsis Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 3 million U.S. military personnel were sent to Southeast Asia to fight in the Vietnam War. Since the end of the Vietnam War, veterans have reported numerous health effects. Herbicides used in Vietnam, in particular Agent Orange have been associated with a variety of cancers and other long term health problems from Parkinson's disease and type 2 diabetes to heart disease. Prior to 1997 laws safeguarded all service men and women deployed to Vietnam including members of the Blue Navy. Since then, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has established that Vietnam veterans are automatically eligible for disability benefits should they develop any disease associated with Agent Orange exposure, however, veterans who served on deep sea vessels in Vietnam are not included. These "Blue Water Navy" veterans must prove they were exposed to Agent Orange before they can claim benefits. At the request of the VA, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) examined whether Blue Water Navy veterans had similar exposures to Agent Orange as other Vietnam veterans. Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure comprehensively examines whether Vietnam veterans in the Blue Water Navy experienced exposures to herbicides and their contaminants by reviewing historical reports, relevant legislation, key personnel insights, and chemical analysis to resolve current debate on this issue.
