Book excerpt: Microcomputer-based labs, the use of real-time data capture and display in teaching, give the learner new ways to explore and understand the world. As this book shows, the international effort over a quarter-century to develop and understand microcomputer-based labs (MBL) has resulted in a rich array of innovative implementations and some convincing evidence for the value of computers for learning. The book is a sampler of MBL work by an outstanding international group of scientists and educators, based on papers they presented at a seminar held as part of the NATO Special Programme on Advanced Educational Technology. The story they tell of the development of MBL offers valuable policy lessons on how to promote educational innovation. The book will be of interest to a wide range of educators and to policy makers.

Topics covered include the use of games in science and technology education, transfer of information using readily available technology, and networking. The concepts of global learning and distance learning are also discussed, along with the use of video techniques and computer technology to transfer information. This volume is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of the information society, the usability of information, and the efficiency of information transfer. The discussion then turns to the use of games to teach science and technology; the most readily available technology for transferring information from teachers to students; and networking as a means to transfer information. The following chapters explore the concept and practice of global learning in the perspective of dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge in response to human needs; the use of microcomputers in the teaching of science; and some of the features of distance learning. The final chapter is devoted to teaching information technology in the classroom. This monograph will be of interest to planners, practitioners, researchers, and other professionals in the field of science education and information technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A widely shared belief among many policy makers, educators, parents, and the general public is that microcomputers have the potential to help pull U.S. education out of its current state of mediocrity (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983), and subsequently improve its quality. A number of barriers, however, impede the widespread implementation of microcomputers in classrooms. Along with cost, the major barrier to full implementation is the lack of knowledge possessed by researchers and educational practitioners alike regarding the nature of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes a teacher must have to use microcomputers successfully in classroom instruction. This paper addresses the standard implied in such an evaluation, that is, the nature of 'successful' classroom microcomputer use that might be embodied in the teaching of widely recognized, expert or master teachers. From the teachers' standpoint, microcomputers are an educational technology used as an instructional tool. Thus, the application of the instruction tool should be central to such an evaluation, within the broader context of ongoing classroom instruction.
