Book Synopsis Acidification and Hypoxia in Marginal Seas by : Xianghui Guo
Download or read book Acidification and Hypoxia in Marginal Seas written by Xianghui Guo and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image is modified based on Figure 1a of Lucey et al. (this Research Topic) and Figure 7b of Niemi et al. (this Research Topic). (A) Graphical depiction of atmospheric warming and increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2atm), which drives ocean warming, contribute to the decreases in dissolved oxygen (DO), and lowers pH and saturation state index of calcium carbonate (Ω). The partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) increases due to increasing atmospheric CO2 that is absorbed into the seawater (i.e., ocean acidification), along with other biological processes in the marine environment. Book Synopsis Coping With Extreme Environments: A Physiological/Psychological Approach by : Costantino Balestra
Download or read book Coping With Extreme Environments: A Physiological/Psychological Approach written by Costantino Balestra and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding how humans cope in extreme environments has expanded our knowledge of the physiological and psychological challenges involved and helped us to quit our comfortable paradigms built on “steady states”. Furthermore, measuring our reactions to intermittent stressors and determining the oscillations of our coping mechanisms has led us to unexpected understandings. This methodology has also directly improved our translational or multidisciplinary approach to the subject. Studying healthy individuals in extreme environments could improve our understanding of patients with impaired physiological capacities (who are coping with an environment that becomes extreme to them) and also improve our understanding of physiology and psychology in the elderly. This eBook collects articles that address this translational multidisciplinary approach in an integrative way. As a whole, this Research Topic aims to better understand human/animal physiology and psychology.

Book Synopsis Precision medicine approaches for heterogeneous conditions such as autism spectrum disorders (The need for a biomarker exploration phase in clinical trials - Phase 2m) by : David Quentin Beversdorf
Download or read book Precision medicine approaches for heterogeneous conditions such as autism spectrum disorders (The need for a biomarker exploration phase in clinical trials - Phase 2m) written by David Quentin Beversdorf and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-04-17 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many therapeutic interventions for autism spectrum disorder fail when they are examined in a clinical trial. Frequently, there is a subset of patients that responds very well to the intervention, while others do not, and the overall result does not yield a positive result. As autism spectrum disorder is highly heterogeneous in its underlying genetics and other etiological risk factors, as well as its heterogeneous phenotypic manifestation, this variability in response to any specific treatment is not entirely surprising. However, it remains a challenge to meaningfully subtype this heterogeneity for targeted treatment. The purpose of this research topic is to solicit articles that address the heterogeneity in autism spectrum disorder in a manner that may meaningfully contribute to targeted treatment approaches. Studies that address the heterogeneity of autism that could theoretically lead to targeted treatment, and studies that more directly address the use of a marker in association with response to a treatment, are both aspects that will contribute to this purpose. It is hoped that this Research Topic will yield articles that can help advance the field towards precision medicine in autism spectrum disorders. Manuscripts that contribute to the specification of the heterogeneity of autism spectrum disorder in a manner that could theoretically lead to targeted treatment would be appropriate for this research topic. Additionally, articles that utilize subtyping in relation to response to treatment would be appropriate for this research topic.

Book Synopsis The Role of Physical and Biological Gut Barriers in Modulating Crosstalk between the Microbiota and the Immune System by : Marika Falcone
Download or read book The Role of Physical and Biological Gut Barriers in Modulating Crosstalk between the Microbiota and the Immune System written by Marika Falcone and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intestine has several means for maintaining immune homeostasis and for avoiding inflammation despite massive antigenic stimulation by food components and by commensal bacteria residing in the gut mucosa. These mechanisms include physical and biological barriers such as (i) the intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB); (ii) the gut vascular barrier (GVB) and (iii) the mucus layer. In particular, the mucus layer does not simply act as a diffusion barrier but has important dynamic functions that regulate the type of commensal bacteria residing in the inner mucus layer, enabling the passage of food and bacterial products into the gut tissue and systemic circulation. Importantly, the mucosal layer also has key immune regulatory functions. A healthy mucus structure is fundamental for promoting the presence of beneficial commensal bacteria, such as the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA)-producing bacteria which are known to promote immune tolerance. Moreover, the mucus layer contains anti-microbial peptides (AMPs) and mucins that have key immune modulatory functions. The integrated response of these combined defense systems is fundamental for containing microbes and their products within the intestine; for avoiding their systemic spread and for suppressing their capacity to activate systemic immune and autoimmune responses.
