Download or read book Process for Assessing Proper Functioning Condition written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical reference outlines the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM's) process for assessing the functioning condition of riparian areas on public lands. Emphasis is placed on the interaction of vegetation, landforms/soils, and hydrology in defining capability and potential of an area. The importance of using an interdisciplinary team is also stressed. The document describes all four categories of functioning condition--proper functioning condition, functional--at risk, nonfunctional, and unknown, and discusses management strategies for each.

Book Synopsis Let the Water Do the Work by : Bill Zeedyk
Download or read book Let the Water Do the Work written by Bill Zeedyk and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let the Water Do the Work is an important contribution to riparian restoration. By "thinking like a creek," one can harness the regenerative power of floods to reshape stream banks and rebuild floodplains along gullied stream channels. Induced Meandering is an artful blend of the natural sciences - geomorphology, hydrology and ecology - which govern channel forming processes. Induced Meandering directly challenges the dominant paradigm of river and creek stabilization by promoting the intentional erosion of selected banks while fostering deposition of eroded materials on an evolving floodplain. The river self-heals as the growth of native riparian vegetation accelerates the meandering process. Not all stream channel types are appropriate for Induced Meandering, yet the Induced Meandering philosophy of "going with the flow" can inform all stream restoration projects. Induced meandering strives to understand rivers as timeless entities governed by immutable rules serving their watersheds, setting their own timetables, and coping with their own realities as they carry mountains grain by grain to the sea. Anyone with an interest in natural resource management in these uncertain times should read this book and put these ideas to work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riparian Areas of the Southwestern United States: Hydrology, Ecology, and Management provides hydrologists, watershed managers, land-use planners, educators, policymakers, and non-governmental organizations with a comprehensive account of the multiple benefits and conflicts arising from the uniquely structured ecosystems of arid and semi-arid regions. The text describes the inhabitants of southwestern riparian ecosystems and addresses the research, planning, and management concerns for these fragile ecosystems in relation to the impacts of water and sediment flows, livestock grazing, and other human activities, and the maintenance of key wildlife and fish habitats.

Book Synopsis Advancing Knowledge on Cyanobacterial Blooms in Freshwaters by : Elisabeth (Savi) Vardaka
Download or read book Advancing Knowledge on Cyanobacterial Blooms in Freshwaters written by Elisabeth (Savi) Vardaka and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanobacterial blooms are a water quality problem that is widely acknowledged to have detrimental ecological and economic effects in drinking and recreational water supplies and fisheries. There is increasing evidence that cyanobacterial blooms have increased globally and are likely to expand in water resources as a result of climate change. Of most concern are cyanotoxins, along with the mechanisms that induce their release and determine their fate in the aquatic environment. These secondary metabolites pose a potential hazard to human health and agricultural and aquaculture products that are intended for animal and human consumption; therefore, strict and reliable control of cyanotoxins is crucial for assessing risk. In this direction, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that determine cyanobacterial bloom structure and toxin production has become the target of management practices. This Special Issue, entitled “Advancing Knowledge on Cyanobacterial Blooms in Freshwaters”, aims to bring together recent multi- and interdisciplinary research, from the field to the laboratory and back again, driven by working hypotheses based on any aspect of mitigating cyanobacterial blooms, from ecological theory to applied research.
