Book excerpt: CAPS (Computer Aided Prototyping System) is an integrated set of software tools that generate prototypes directly from real time requirements. The success of CAPS depends on being able to generate the prototype quickly so that it can be evaluated, leading to the construction of a program built on true requirements thereby resulting in a better software product. The key to developing prototypes quickly is having a significant software base to choose reusable components from. The problem with the current version of CAPS is that there exists no software base storage facility. This thesis utilizes the Ontos database to build the object oriented conceptual design for the data object repository and uses TAE to create the graphical user interface to access the repository. It further explores various searching techniques to deterniine the best possible implementation of the repository search engine. The results of this thesis are a conceptual design that can be used to implement the software base and an interface which provides a fluid, intuitive, interactive environment in which the user will be able to manipulate the database when actually built It further identifies the multi-level filtering technique as the best candidate for searching the database, because of its high recall, high precision, and reduced search time.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the design and implementation of a new interface editor for the Computer-Aided Prototyping System (CAPS), which de- couples the user interface from the real-time prototype. Using this design, a CAPS user creates a prototype with an interface development tool and a Prototyping System Description Language (PSDL) editor. This real-time prototype executes on two processors using a client/server architecture; the user interface executes on a client, and the real-time PSDL application executes on a server. In addition, this thesis includes demonstrations, with source code, which implement the design. The demonstrations show that Java development tools can be used to create a high-quality user interface for a PSDL application. A socket connection was used to implement the client/server communication. The demonstrations were successful, but the socket programming model is too primitive for the new design. Therefore, a high-level client/server architecture, such as the Common Object Resource Broker Architecture (CORBA), is required for future development of the design.

Book excerpt: The Computer-Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) is an integrated collection of software tools that support the development of software systems utilizing the prototype paradigm. Central to CAPS is the Prototype System Description Language (PSDL). The PSDL Editor supplied in CAPS Release 1 provided a unique combination of a graphical interface for editing PSDL data flow diagrams and an attribute-grammar based text editor to enforce syntactically correct PSDL prototypes. Feedback from CAPS users highlighted on productivity impacts due to the dual user interface as well as the steep learning curve required to become proficient with the attribute- grammar based text editor. This research initiates the development of the next generation of the CAPS PSDL Editor, focusing on the graph editor. Our approach provides a single graphical user interface with pull-down menus for editing both graphical and text information. Automatic syntax generation and validation as well as limited semantic validation is provided by a background syntax/semantics checker. The result of this research is a working graph editor meeting all the new requirements. When integrated with a the new syntax/semantics checker, CAPS release 2 will have a PSDL Editor with enhanced capabilities and expected productivity improvements.
