Participants from ?ve continents came together to celebrate this annual event. Thepaperspublishedintheconferenceinthisvolumere?ectthenewprogress in the following aspect. Research in developing cooperative applications is currently focusing on two directions. One is the cooperation in the software development process and the other is the variety of the targeted cooperative software products. Many papers address how to facilitate cooperation in the software engineering process p- ticularly global software engineering. The importance of sharing information in cooperation is emphasized by the authors. For example, papers that addressed the developmentof sharing mental models, tools for easilyshared projects,sh- ing links for cross-media information spaces, sharing resources and transfer of knowledge among team members etc. have attracted special attention. Many papers presented in this volume are the research results of tackling problems in developing a great variety of cooperative software products. The targeted systems are cooperative support for music creation, cooperative process m- agement systems, cooperative visualization systems for geographic information, cooperative cultural information sharing platforms, cooperative reasoning s- tems, cooperative sensor networks for environment monitoring, remote coop- ative video vehicle monitoring systems etc. Another aspect of the papers in this volume is dealing with the problems in ?ner phases in the cooperative product production life cycle. The topics addressed range from partner selection for - operation at the beginning, requirement gathering, requirement negotiation, to cooperativedesign, production to cooperative testing, and ?nally to cooperative system operation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SystemVerilog is a rich set of extensions to the IEEE 1364-2001 Verilog Hardware Description Language (Verilog HDL). These extensions address two major aspects of HDL based design. First, modeling very large designs with concise, accurate, and intuitive code. Second, writing high-level test programs to efficiently and effectively verify these large designs. This book, SystemVerilog for Design, addresses the first aspect of the SystemVerilog extensions to Verilog. Important modeling features are presented, such as two-state data types, enumerated types, user-defined types, structures, unions, and interfaces. Emphasis is placed on the proper usage of these enhancements for simulation and synthesis. A companion to this book, SystemVerilog for Verification, covers the second aspect of SystemVerilog. 'The development of the SystemVerilog language makes it easier to produce more efficient and concise descriptions of complex hardware designs. The authors of this book have been involved with the development of the language from the beginning, and who is better to learn from than those involved from day one?' Book excerpt: An introduction to a powerful and flexible network modeling tool for developing and understanding complex systems, with many examples from a range of industries. Design structure matrix (DSM) is a straightforward and flexible modeling technique that can be used for designing, developing, and managing complex systems. DSM offers network modeling tools that represent the elements of a system and their interactions, thereby highlighting the system's architecture (or designed structure). Its advantages include compact format, visual nature, intuitive representation, powerful analytical capacity, and flexibility. Used primarily so far in the area of engineering management, DSM is increasingly being applied to complex issues in health care management, financial systems, public policy, natural sciences, and social systems. This book offers a clear and concise explanation of DSM methods for practitioners and researchers.

Organized into three sections (history, current tools and concepts, and existing efforts and research issues), this resource provides the field of building product modeling with a standard reference as well as a single, comprehensive text for university courses. Until now, all the efforts in building modeling have been reported in research journals and conference proceedings or been made available as draft standards on the Internet. Building Product Models is the only book available on this vital field, bringing together essential aspects of major efforts from the early 1970s to the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes the papers presented at the fifth International Conference on Application of Natural Language to Information Systems (NLDB 2000) which was held in Versailles (France) on June 28-30. Following NLDB95 in Versailles, NLDB96 i n Amsterdam, NLDB97 i n Vancouver, and NLDB99 i n Klagenfurt, NLDB 2000 was a forum for exchanging new research results and trends on the benefits of integrating Natural Language resources in Information System Engineering. Since the first NLDB workshop in 1995 it has become apparent that each aspect of an information system life cycle may be improved by natural language techniques: database design (specification, validation, conflict resolution), database query languages, and application programming that use new software engineering research (natural language program specifications). As information systems are now evolving into the communication area, the term databases should be considered in the broader sense of information and communication systems. The main new trend in NLDB 2000 is related to the WEB wave: WEB querying, WEB answering, and information retrieval. Among 47 papers submitted from 18 countries, the program committee selected 29 papers to be presented during the conference. Besides these regular papers, two invited talks (given by Pr. Reind P. van de Riet and Pr. Maurice Gross), and a set of posters and demonstrations are also included in these proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product design is characterized by a steady increase in complexity. The main focus of this book is a structural approach on complexity management. This means, system structures are considered in order to address the challenge of complexity in all aspects of product design. Structures arise from the complex dependencies of system elements. Thus, the identification of system structures provides access to the understanding of system behavior in practical applications. The book presents a methodology that enables the analysis, control and optimization of complex structures, and the applicability of domain-spanning problems. The methodology allows significant improvements on handling system complexity by creating improved system understanding on the one hand and optimizing product design that is robust for system adaptations on the other hand. Developers can thereby enhance project coordination and improve communication between team members and as a result shorten development time. The practical application of the methodology is described by means of two detailed examples.

Book excerpt: Building Intelligent Information Systems Software shows scientists and engineers how to build applications that model complex information, data, and knowledge without the need for coding. Traditional software development takes time and leads to inflexible, complicated applications that almost, but don't exactly, meet the intended needs. Requirements can change, sometimes mid-development, and adapting existing systems can be difficult. Individual solutions can be incompatible, leading to information silos and inefficiency throughout an organization. This book offers a solution – the Information Unit Model, an innovative architecture for translating domain knowledge into applications. By encapsulating the complexities of computing, the Unit Model allows engineers to focus on business or experimental needs. Author Tom Feigenbaum, inventor of the Unit Modeler, demonstrates this innovative software architecture for rapid application design and development. His approach promotes repurposing pre-existing tools and libraries, and collaborating across the cloud, to promote information sharing and efficient development practices. Each concept is illustrated with examples including file management, data management, and 3D visualization. - Turn your domain knowledge into applications without heavy coding - Design and develop information systems applications in a fraction of the time of traditional methods - Leverage previously-built components to jump start new projects - Includes access to a trial version of the Information Unit Modeler tool for rapid application development
