Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Melville J. Herskovits award (African Studies Association) Throughout southwestern Nigeria, Yoruba men and women create objects called aale to protect their propertiesfarms, gardens, market goods, firewoodfrom the ravages of thieves. Aale are objects of such unassuming appearance that a non-Yoruba viewer might not register their important presence in the Yoruba visual landscape: a dried seedpod tied with palm fronds to the trunk of a fruit tree, a burnt corncob suspended on a wire, an old shoe tied with a rag to a worn-out broom and broken comb, a ripe red pepper pierced with a single broom straw and set atop a pile of eggs. Consequently, aale have rarely been discussed in print, and then only as peripheral elements in studies devoted to other issues. Yet aale are in no way peripheral to Yoruba culture or aesthetics. In Vigilant Things, David T. Doris argues that aale are keys to understanding how images function in Yoruba social and cultural life. The humble, often degraded objects that comprise aale reveal as eloquently as any canonical artwork the channels of power that underlie the surfaces of the visible. Aale are warnings, intended to trigger the work of conscience. Aale objects symbolically threaten suffering as the consequence of transgressionthe suffering of disease, loss, barrenness, paralysis, accident, madness, fruitless labor, or deathand as such are often the useless residues of things that were once positively valued: empty snail shells, shards of pottery, fragments of rusted iron, and the like. If these objects share suffering and uselessness as constitutive elements, it is because they already have been made to suffer and become useless. Aale offer would-be thieves an opportunity to recognize themselves in advance of their actions and to avoid the thievery that would make the "useless" people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking the university explores and develops key critical debates in the humanities (concerning, for example, postmodernism, New Historicism, political criticism, cultural studies, interdisciplinarity and deconstruction) in the context of the various crises widely felt to be facing academic institutions. The analysis of the characteristic features of today's university is guided by a close reading of Derrida's work on the question of the academic institution, particularly with regard to the motifs of leverage and disorientation. This important topic has been the subject of heated debate in recent years and Rethinking the university offers clear and concise summaries of current work in the field as well as exploring original and challenging lines of enquiry on a number of issues of contemporary concern. In particular, Wortham argues that while Derrida's image of a university 'walking on two feet' presents us with a potentially paralysing problem, nevertheless it also enables a strong affirmation of the possibilities of academic life, work and effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An thorough introduction to Zen Buddhist practice—in a reader-friendly question-and-answer format—by two highly regarded teacher-writers This unique introduction to Zen teaching and practice is structured as a Q&A, making it a most useful reference for new and seasoned practitioners to look things up. The questioner (Susan Moon) and the answerer (Norman Fischer) are Buddhist teachers and old friends, each with a unique gift for articulation. Their friendly conversation covers not only the basics of Zen Buddhism but a range of issues unique to Zen in America in the twenty-first century, including: • What is zazen and how do you do it? • Where did Zen start and where did it come from? • Will I have an enlightenment experience? • What is the law of karma in a nutshell? • What do Zen Buddhists say about rebirth? • How do you recognize a good, solid Zen teacher? Moon and Fischer’s conversations are both humorous and informative, providing a good basic education in Zen—not only the history, theory, and practice but also contemporary issues such as gender inequality, sexual ethics, and the tension between Asian traditions and the modern American reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us is hopelessly trapped inside of a particular language matrix, until we become consciously aware of how this inexorable process relentlessly operates. This book presents an unified conception of what language is universally, for all sentient beings, in all of its forms and aspects; and how language phenomena operate, through unconsciously projected four-dimensional (time-space) gestalts, in specific situations in the real world, to produce meaningful perceptual closures and useful results. This book operationally identifies the universal "fundamental particles" (NOT phonemes, nor letters of the alphabet, etc.) of any language; and how these fundamental phenomenal "particles" combine, by the activity of unconsciously projected, four-dimensional, perceptual gestalts, to form the more complex language "atoms" (NOT necessarily, "words", etc.), and "molecules" (NOT necessarily, sentences, etc.), which interconnect further with the other culturally "mandated" physical artifacts imbedded in the specific situation, and operate physically, to produce the culturally prescribed, "meanings", and useful objects of intention, of the individuals of whatever species, which are intercommunicating, and inter-operating in the situation. Examples of many kinds are presented, often in terms of concerns, activities, and operations relating to libraries. This book is multidisciplinary in scope.
