Book excerpt: The potential sources of organic matter to bed sediment of the Tualatin River in northwestern Oregon were investigated by comparing the isotopic fractionation of carbon and nitrogen and the carbon/nitrogen ratios of potential sources and bed sediments. Samples of bed sediment, suspended sediment, and seston, as well as potential source materials, such as soil, plant litter, duckweed, and wastewater treatment facility effluent particulate were collected in 1998-2000. Based on the isotopic data, terrestrial plants and soils were determined to be the most likely sources of organic material to Tualatin River bed sediments. The 13C fractionation matched well, and although the 15N and carbon/ nitrogen ratio of fresh plant litter did not match those of bed sediments, the changes expected with decomposition would result in a good match. The fact that the isotopic composition of decomposed terrestrial plant material closely resembled that of soils and bed sediments supports this conclusion. Phytoplankton probably was not a major source of organic matter to bed sediments. Compared to the values for bed sediments, the 13C values and carbon/nitrogen ratios of phytoplankton were too low and the 15N values were too high. Decomposition would only exacerbate these differences. Although phytoplankton cannot be considered a major source of organic material to bed sediment, a few bed sediment samples in the lower reach of the river showed a small influence from phytoplankton as evidenced by lower values than in other bed sediment samples.

Book excerpt: This study characterized the amount and quality of organic matter in the Clackamas River, Oregon, to gain an understanding of sources that contribute to the formation of chlorinated and brominated disinfection by-products (DBPs), focusing on regulated DBPs in treated drinking water from two direct-filtration treatment plants that together serve approximately 100,000 customers. The central hypothesis guiding this study was that natural organic matter leaching out of the forested watershed, in-stream growth of benthic algae, and phytoplankton blooms in the reservoirs contribute different and varying proportions of organic carbon to the river. Differences in the amount and composition of carbon derived from each source affects the types and concentrations of DBP precursors entering the treatment plants and, as a result, yield varying DBP concentrations and species in finished water. The two classes of DBPs analyzed in this study—trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs)—form from precursors within the dissolved and particulate pools of organic matter present in source water.

Book excerpt: Nutrient pollution may perhaps be one of the oldest water quality problems and has recently been considered as one of the greatest threats to estuarine and coastal waters. Excessive nutrient loads have had a vast array of impacts on estuarine and coastal ecosystems globally. Direct negative effects include: shading out of benthic plant communities, hypoxia and anoxia due to increased biological oxygen demand, compositional change in plant and fauna! community structure and increased occurrences of harmful algal blooms. This has lead to decreased biodiversity, habitat, fisheries, tourism and aesthetics. So far environmental managers have had to rely on a posteriori assessments of the status of nutrient pollution, using indicators such as taxonomic shifts and changes in biological abundance, which have already occurred. By the time nutrient pollution is detected, restoration of habitats is costly and sometimes no longer an option. Therefore, there is a need for management tools to assess sources of nutrient loads before damage to estuarine and coastal ecosystems progresses beyond recovery. Early work using stable isotopes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in groundwater samples demonstrated the potential for using stable isotopes to identify anthropogenic sources of nitrogen. These studies revealed that nitrogen sources such as fertilizers, soil organic nitrogen and wastewater nitrogen have isotopically distinct signatures that could be used to assess anthropogenic nitrogen contributions. Therefore, application of nitrogen stable isotope methods could potentially provide information on the anthropogenic nitrogen sources stimulating nutrient pollution in estuarine and coastal waters. However, when I assessed this approach for application, two sources of errors became apparent. First, laboratory isolation of dissolved inorganic nitrate from seawater delivered results depleted in 15N relative to the standard used to assess the method. Second, isotopic fractionation associated with nitrogen cycle processes complicates usage of an isotopic mass balance to solve for the nitrogen source and its fractional contribution based on isotopic data alone. As a result, isotopic analysis alone of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to determine anthropogenic sources of nutrient loads to estuarine and coastal waters is not a practical approach to obtain management information concerning nutrient pollution.

Book excerpt: This thesis uses a variety of natural abundance isotope measurements to expand our understanding of nitrogen and organic carbon cycling within the ocean. Chapters 2 & 3 use stable isotopes of nitrate to investigate recent trends in nitrogen cycling in the southern California Current System (sCCS). In Chapter 2 we show that surface ocean warming during the 2015-2016 El Niño event led to reduced nitrate supply and increased reliance on recycled nitrate produced via euphotic zone nitrification. We also identified spatial and temporal variability in euphotic zone nitrate utilization associated with iron limitation of phytoplankton. Chapter 3 uses a time series of stable isotopes of nitrate along with other physical and chemical measurements to examine recent biogeochemical changes in a partially isolated marine basin off the coast of California, whose bottom waters become deoxygenated between annual flushing events. Our data confirm an unprecedented increase in water column denitrification in basin bottom waters in recent years that was likely caused by a long-term trend of decreasing oxygen concentrations outside the basin. Chapter 4 uses a variety of chemical and isotopic measurements to characterize organic matter across oxygen gradients in the eastern tropical North Pacific (ETNP). This work describes unique organic matter dynamics along the oxycline and shows that optical properties of dissolved organic matter effectively identify locations where intense oxic remineralization takes place, whereas most other bulk measurements of organic matter do not provide insight into unique processes within these environments. We also document the impact of a passing hurricane on water column properties. Chapter 5 uses thermal oxidation in conjunction with a chemical processing method to show that the current paradigm of marine DOC cycling needs revision. Our results show that even the most 14C-depleted DOC fraction exhibits a vertical radiocarbon gradient, suggesting the addition and removal of DOC from this reservoir on shorter timescales than current models predict. We propose a new hypothesis for marine DOC cycling that would revise the water column lifetime of marine DOC to only 2,300 years, approximately doubling the estimated flux of carbon through the deep ocean.
