Book Synopsis Use of a Field Model to Analyze Probable Fire Environments Encountered Within the Complex Geometries of Nuclear Power Plants by :
Download or read book Use of a Field Model to Analyze Probable Fire Environments Encountered Within the Complex Geometries of Nuclear Power Plants written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fire in a nuclear power plant (NPP) can damage equipment needed to safely operate the plant and thereby either directly cause an accident or else reduce the plant's margin of safety. The development of a field-model fire code to analyze the probable fire environments encountered within NPP is discussed. A set of fire tests carried out under the aegis of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is described. The results of these tests are then utilized to validate the field model.

Book Synopsis Fire Models for Assessment of Nuclear Power Plant Fires by :
Download or read book Fire Models for Assessment of Nuclear Power Plant Fires written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in available fire models for the assessment of nuclear power plants fires. The advantages and disadvantages of three basic types of fire models (zone, field, and control volume) and Sandia's experience with these models will be discussed. It is shown that the type of fire model selected to solve a particular problem should be based on the information that is required. Areas of concern which relate to all nuclear power plant fire models are identified. 17 refs., 6 figs.

Book Synopsis Verification & Validation of Selected Fire Models for Nuclear Power Plant Applications by : U.s. Nuclear Regulation Comion

This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the use of fire modeling increases in support of day-to-day nuclear power plant (NPP) applications and fire risk analyses, the importance of verification and validation (V&V) also increases. V&V studies build confidence in a model by evaluating its underlying assumptions, capabilities, and limitations, and quantifying its performance in predicting the fire conditions that have been measured in controlled experiments. This volume documents a V&V study for the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, for applications relevant to NPPs. Guidance has been provided by ASTM E 1355, Standard Guide for Evaluating the Predictive Capability of Deterministic Fire Models, including the basic structure of this report. FDS was developed, and is maintained, by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Version 4 was officially released in July 2004, and several minor updates had been released as of the time of publication of this report. All of the simulations performed for the current V&V study were done with Version 4.06. With support from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the FDS Technical Reference Guide for Version 4 was rewritten to follow the basic outline suggested by ASTM E 1355. However, the Guide does not specifically address NPPs. The primary purpose of this report is to document the accuracy of FDS in predicting the results of six sets of large-scale fire experiments that are relevant to NPPs. These results are found in Appendix A and discussed in Chapter 6 of this report. Chapters 2 through 5 provide brief summaries of corresponding chapters within the FDS Technical Reference Guide, which discuss the underlying theory and the numerical methods.
Book Synopsis Fire Dynamics Tools Quantitative Fire Hazard Analysis Methods for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Fire Protection Inspection Program by : U.s. Nuclear Reglatory Commission
Download or read book Fire Dynamics Tools Quantitative Fire Hazard Analysis Methods for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Fire Protection Inspection Program written by U.s. Nuclear Reglatory Commission and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has developed quantitative methods, known as “Fire Dynamics Tools” (FDTs), for analyzing the impact of fire and fire protection systems in nuclear power plants (NPPs). These methods have been implemented in spreadsheets and taught at the NRC's quarterly regional inspector workshops. The FDTs were developed using state-of-the-art fire dynamics equations and correlations that were preprogrammed and locked into Microsoft Excel® spreadsheets. These FDTs enable inspectors to perform quick, easy, first- order calculations for potential fire scenarios using today's state-of-the-art principles of fire dynamics. Each FDTs spreadsheet also contains a list of the physical and thermal properties of the materials commonly encountered in NPPs.
