Book Synopsis Revisiting U.S. Trade Policy by : Alfred E. Eckes
Download or read book Revisiting U.S. Trade Policy written by Alfred E. Eckes and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In trade policy, as in many other areas of public policy, decision makers often confront present and future problems with little understanding of how similar disputes were resolved in the past. Too often, busy public officials had no time to write or record negotiating histories. Revisiting U.S. Trade Policy, which is certain to become a classic in the literature of trade negotiations, is just such a record. Built on the oral histories of thirty-five former U.S. trade policymakers -- including Michael Blumenthal, Alonzo McDonald, William Roth, and Robert S. Strauss -- this unique record, prepared for publication by Alfred E. Eckes, revisits some of the most important moments of America's trade liberalization program in the years after World War II. From GATT to the World Trade Organization, these major players look back in candid hindsight at their decisions concerning trade policy and the effects that those decisions had on shaping the new international economic order.

Book Synopsis Trade Policy in a Changing World Economy by : Robert E. Baldwin
Download or read book Trade Policy in a Changing World Economy written by Robert E. Baldwin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade policy issues are no longer solely the concern of a few government specialists and academics. Manufacturers, businesspeople, educators, and government officials must keep abreast of laws and regulations relating to trade, the economic consequences of various trade measures, and current trends in policy, but there have been few coherent sources for such information. Trade Policy in a Changing World Economy provides a clear introduction to complex trade issues, covering theoretical issues of trade policy, the changing nature of American trade policy, the changing nature of American trade policy since World War II, multilateral trade negotiations, and trade strategies. The volume is particularly timely as the world's nations enter a new round of GATT negotiations for the reduction of trade barriers.

U.S. Trade Issues: A Reference Handbook is a timely exploration of this vital and politically sensitive question, one that emerged as a crucial issue in the 2008 presidential election. Written by a former chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission, it provides an authoritative, accessible, and unbiased review of the defining events, principal players, and key controversies in U.S. trade policy. U.S. Trade Issues describes American trade policies from the days of the republic to the present, focusing most intently on the post-World War II era. It explores a number of current issues, including the Doha Round of Multilateral Negotiations, NAFTA, and the president's trade authority. In addition, the handbook looks at American trade policy in the context of an increasingly globalized world economy.

Book Synopsis Free Trade Agreements by : Jeffrey J. Schott
Download or read book Free Trade Agreements written by Jeffrey J. Schott and published by Peterson Institute for International Economics. This book was released on 2004 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this conference volume, distinguished economists and trade policymakers address the US initiatives to enter into free trade negotiations with a broad range of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the Western Hemisphere, and Africa. The sheer number of these initiatives is unprecedented and has provoked major policy questions concerning US interests in the negotiations, the setting of priorities among the many contenders for concluding free trade agreements (FTAs) with the United States, the objectives of those trading partners, and the implications that these agreements could have for broader initiatives such as the Doha Round in the World Trade Organization and the Free Trade Area of the Americas. The papers in the volume were presented during a conference on FTAs and US trade policy, sponsored by the Institute in May 2003. The editor, Jeffrey Schott, summarizes the policy implications drawn from the conference papers and discussions, which are organized around several topics: the conceptual case for FTAs and how they have worked in the past; what FTAs imply for the broader global system; the specific agreements that are already being pursued (Australia, Central America, Morocco, southern Africa) or considered (ASEAN, Brazil, Egypt, Korea, and Taiwan). The volume includes a technical appendix with results of GTAP and gravity model simulations of the trade and welfare effects of the prospective agreements.
Download or read book Talking Trade written by Robert S Walters and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges from Japan, opportunities in the new European Community, and prospects for developing countries’ economies all revolve around trade and all have implications for U.S. economic strengths and interests. The cases in this book have been selected to illustrate a variety of contemporary trade policies, practices, and partners. The volume begins with an overview of the multilateral trade regime embodied in the GATT; it then moves on to specifics, including two different cases of U.S.-Japanese exchanges (goods versus services), trade strategies of Brazil as a newly industrializing country, and the EC as the world’s largest trader. Throughout the cases, larger themes are traced, connecting trade with economic policy, foreign policy with domestic politics, and change in U.S. economic strength with the rise of new economic powers in the world arena.
