Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume offers a definitive new history of European economies at war from 1914 to 1918. It studies how European economies mobilised for war, how existing economic institutions stood up under the strain, how economic development influenced outcomes and how wartime experience influenced post-war economic growth. Leading international experts provide the first systematic comparison of economies at war between 1914 and 1918 based on the best available data for Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands. The editors' overview draws some stark lessons about the role of economic development, the importance of markets and the damage done by nationalism and protectionism. A companion volume to the acclaimed The Economics of World War II, this is a major contribution to our understanding of total war.

Book excerpt: This volume was first published by the American Battle Monuments Commission in 1938 and was republished by CMH in 1992 to commemorate the American Expeditionary Forces' seventy-fifth birthday. American Armies and Battlefields in Europe, a facsimile edition to commemorate the seventy-fifth birthday of the American Expeditionary Forces, is a unique, illustrated volume that captures the AEF's lessons of battle during World War I. Based on the series of battlefield tours conducted for staff officers at General John J. Pershing's headquarters, the operational chapters describe the military situation, giving detailed accounts of actual fighting supported by maps and sketches, and a summary of events and service of combat divisions. Topical chapters on the Services of Supply, the U.S. Navy, military cemeteries and memorials, and other interesting and useful facts conclude the narrative. For scholars and students of the Great War, as well as veterans and their descendants wishing to find battle sites of long ago, this guidebook remains the most authoritative and easily usable source for visitors to the AEF's battlefields. The American Battle Monuments Commission, a small independent agency established by Congress in 1923 at the request of General John J. Pershing, is the guardian of America's overseas commemorative cemeteries and memorials. Its mission is to honor the service, achievements, and sacrifice of the United States armed forces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Operations of United States Relief Commission in Europe, 1914 It was found that there were about Americans in Holland awaiting transportation to America by the holland-america Line and via England. Special trains had come in from Berlin and Munich, and it seemed that Holland was the normal point of egress for all Americans coming from Germany. It was determined to direct our efforts to gettin Amuicans out of Germany and perhaps even from Austria into olland, where we could send them home direct or through England. As was everywhere the case, the Ameri can legation had been working under a tremendous load. The women of the family even, with a large force of volunteers, had been labor ing from morning until midnight assistin their compatriots. Dr. Van Dyke, our minister at The Hague, had een able to arrange With the Dutch banks to cash American letters of credit and travelers' checks to reasonable amounts by indorsing the paper himself. Capt. A. H. Sunderland and Capt. E. D. Ardery were detailed to take over the transportation problem, and was left with them. By the courtesy of the Dutch Government we were offered a special train to the German border. Ca t. B. Enochs and Mr. Winslow, private sec retary to Hon. J ames Gerard, the American ambassador to Ger many, had accompanied a special train of Americans from Berlin to Holland and were of reat assistance in arran ing the details of transportation for us. Oth Capt. Enochs and r. Winslow deserve great credit for their management of the special trains that had been sent from Berlin to Holland before our arrival. At Bentheim we were taken over by the German railroad authorities. By the courtesy of the Dutch and German Governments in supply ing special trains for us, we were enabled to make the journey from The Hague to Berlin in 16 hours, which is only five hours more than the regular running time of fast through trains, whereas 32 hours was the best time made by trains since the beginning of hostilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Service of Love in War Time: American Friends Relief, Work in Europe, 1917-1919 This book does not profess to be a history of the work of relief and reconstruction which Friends have done in France and Russia and in other countries since the fateful autumn of 1914. Only one who has been in the thick of the work on the field can write the final, intimate history of any one of the major relief undertakings of Friends. And as the work since 1917 has been a joint endeavor of English and American Friends the complete history of it must be composite, i.e. written by both English and Americans. It is to be hoped that persons of leisure will be found in the not distant future who can tell with sufficient detail the interesting story of the labors of this large band of volunteers who have rebuilt homes, revived agriculture, restored the spirits of depressed refugees, saved the lives of many children and reconstructed extensive areas of the desolated war-zones, who have gone out with living faith and with efficient relief into some of the darkest regions of the suffering world, both in war-time and in the no less appalling period which has followed the armistice. My attempt is much more modest. I am merely endeavoring here to interpret the effort which American Friends have made to express their spirit of human love to a part of the world - an innocent part - caught in the awful tangle of the tragedy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling biography: a “complete and powerful assessment” of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency (Booklist, starred review). Drawing on newly declassified documents and thousands of pages of unpublished material, The Age of Eisenhower tells the story of a masterful president guiding the nation through the great crises of the 1950s, from McCarthyism and the Korean War through civil rights turmoil and Cold War conflicts. This is a portrait of a skilled leader who, despite his conservative inclinations, found a middle path through the bitter partisanship of his era. At home, Eisenhower affirmed the central elements of the New Deal, such as Social Security; fought the demagoguery of Senator Joseph McCarthy; and advanced the agenda of civil rights for African-Americans. Abroad, he ended the Korean War and avoided a new quagmire in Vietnam. Yet he also charted a significant expansion of America’s missile technology and deployed a vast array of covert operations around the world to confront the challenge of communism. As he left office, he cautioned Americans to remain alert to the dangers of a powerful military-industrial complex that could threaten their liberties. Today, presidential historians rank Eisenhower fifth on the list of great presidents, and William Hitchcock’s “rich narrative” shows us why Ike’s stock has risen so high. He was a gifted leader, a decent man of humble origins who used his powers to advance the welfare of all Americans (The Wall Street Journal).
