Book Synopsis The People's Agents and the Battle to Protect the American Public by : Rena Steinzor
Download or read book The People's Agents and the Battle to Protect the American Public written by Rena Steinzor and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reasonable people disagree about the reach of the federal government, but there is near-universal consensus that it should protect us from such dangers as bacteria-infested food, harmful drugs, toxic pollution, crumbling bridges, and unsafe toys. And yet, the agencies that shoulder these responsibilities are in shambles; if they continue to decline, lives will be lost and natural resources will be squandered. In this timely book, Rena Steinzor and Sidney Shapiro take a hard look at the tangled web of problems that have led to this dire state of affairs. It turns out that the agencies are not primarily to blame and that regulatory failure actually stems from a host of overlooked causes. Steinzor and Shapiro discover that unrelenting funding cuts, a breakdown of the legislative process, an increase in the number of political appointees, a concurrent loss of experienced personnel, chaotic White House oversight, and ceaseless political attacks on the bureaucracy all have contributed to the broken system. But while the news is troubling, the authors also propose a host of reforms, including a new model for measuring the success of the agencies and a revitalization of the civil service. The People’s Agents and the Battle to Protect the American Public is an urgent and compelling appeal to renew America’s best traditions of public service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Radclyffe Hall was originally published in 1926 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Miss Ogilvy Finds Herself' is a novel about a woman who struggles to find her identity after the conclusion of the First World War. Marguerite Radclyffe Hall was born on 12th August 1880, in Bournemouth, England. Hall's first novel The Unlit Lamp (1924) was a lengthy and grim tale that proved hard to sell. It was only published following the success of the much lighter social comedy The Forge (1924), which made the best-seller list of John O'London's Weekly. Hall is a key figure in lesbian literature for her novel The Well of Loneliness (1928). This is her only work with overt lesbian themes and tells the story of the life of a masculine lesbian named Stephen Gordon.
Download or read book Avenge written by Roy Westall and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the characters in the book were real seventeenth century people, the majority living in Manchester, a town that did not have a Member of Parliament. Charles I was an autocratic king who believed that there was no one above him but God, and so when Parliament asked for a greater say in running the country he refused, leading to disenchantment in many parts of the country, especially in the South-East of Lancashire. When Lord Strange, the son of the 6th Earl of Derby, and the King's representative for Lancashire, marched into Manchester with his troops to demand the retrieval of his armoury, Richard Perceval a hand-loom weaver from Kirkmanshulme, a hamlet situated between Manchester & Stockport, pulled a Royalist of his horse and was shot. Lord Strange was later to be hung in Bolton for this crime, and when Parliament heard of Richard Perceval's death they announced that a 'Civil War' has begun. Jenny Grimshawe, a member of a fictitious family living on the Ancoats Hall Estate of Nicholas Mosley, Lord of the Manor of Manchester, was due to marry Richard Perceval, but on hearing of his killing, avowed to avenge his death. She cross-dressed, joined the Royalist army, was present at the siege of Liverpool, the massacre at Bolton and obtained revenge at the battle of Marston Moor, three miles West of York.
