Book excerpt: RAHIM Sufi/Bhakti Poet & Khan-i-Khanan of Mughal Emperor Akbar & his Circle of Poets SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith 'Abd'ur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan (1556-1627) was a Sufi/Bhakti poet and scholar and linguist and great patron of the arts under Emperor Akbar and under Emperor Jahangir. He was the commander-in-chief of the army of Akbar against Sultan Muzaffar of Gujarat. Rahim was known for his strange manner of giving alms to the poor. He never looked at the person he was giving alms to, keeping his gaze downwards in all humility. He was famous for his poetry and generosity even at the court of Abbas the great, the Persian Shah of the time. His ghazals are said to have surpassed those of Naziri and many are Sufi and Bhakti in nature. He also composed many dohas in Hindi (Braj Bahasa... an early form of Urdu). Popularly known as Rahim and immortalised through his dohas or couplets, Rahim was among the most important ministers in Akbar's court. His tomb sits prominently along the Mathura Road, formerly the Mughal Grand Trunk Road, and is in close proximity to the Dargah of Nizam ud-din Auliya and Humayun's Tomb in South Delhi. Here is a selection of ruba'is, a ghazal, songs on Krishna, but mainly of his dohas, a rhymed couplet that is a wise, complete thought in itself. He was with Kabir, Tulsidas, Baba Farid and Vrind a master of this simple but powerful form. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept in all poems. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 268 pages. Book excerpt: SUFI POETS OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY Selected Poems Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Prophet Mohammed's nephew and son-in-law Hazrat 'Ali (598-661) was the first Imam of the Shi'ites and the fourth of the true caliphs of the Sunnis. Sufi Masters believe in 'Ali as one of the 'Seven Great Ones' in the first generation of teachers and many in orders of Dervishes trace their spiritual ancestry back to him. His ghazal that follows contains the essence of all the Sufi poetry in this book that came after him. You do not know it, but in you is the remedy; you cause the sickness, but this you don't see. You are but a small form... this, you assume: but you're larger than any universe, in reality. You are the book that of any fallacies is clear, in you are all letters spelling out, the mystery. You are the Being, you're the very Being... It: you contain That, which contained cannot be! Book excerpt: SEVEN 'SHAHS' OF SUFI POETRY Selected Poems Mas'ud Shah, Shah Ni'mat'ullah, Shah Da'i, Qutub Shah, Shah Latif, Bulleh Shah & Nur 'Ali Shah Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Mas'ud Shah (1048-1122) originally came from Hamadan. In the beginning he was at the court of the prince of Ghazneh and governor of India Sayfu'-daula Mahmud and quickly progressed in wealth and honour. When he was forty he was thrown into prison after being wrongfully accused along with his patron of treachery by Sultan Ibrahim. He became a 'Servant of God' or a Sufi and a bit of a hermit. His famous Habsiyyat, (prison-songs) are among the most interesting poems in the Persian language. Shah Ni'mat'ullah (1330-1431) was the founder of an order of Sufis that is today the largest in Iran. As well as a Sufi Master he was a poet who at times used 'Sayyid' as his takhallus or pen-name. He was influenced by Ibn 'Arabi and Hafiz.. He composed many prose works on Sufism and his Divan contains over 13,000 couplets, mostly ghazals and ruba'is. Shah Da'i (1406-1464) was born and passed away in Shiraz. He was initiated into Sufism by Abu Ishaq Bahrami known as 'The Shaikh of Four Books', a leader or representative of Shah Ni'mat'ullah. Among Shah Dai's works are a number of risalahs (Essays) including interpretations of Koranic verses, a translation of a short work of Ibn 'Arabi. Qutub Shah (1565-1611) was the fifth sultan of the Qutub Shahi dynasty of Golconda in South India. He founded the city of Hyderabad. Qutub Shah was a scholar of Arabic and Persian. He wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian. Qutub Shah had the distinction of being the first Urdu poet and is credited with introducing a new sensibility into prevailing genres of Persian/Urdu poetry. He was also a mystic or Sufi poet. Shah Latif (1689-1752) was a Sufi Master and is considered by many to be the greatest poet of the Sindhi language. His book of poetry is called the Risalo. His shrine is located in Bhit and attracts hundreds of pilgrims every day. He is the most famous Sindhi poet and Sufi. Bulleh Shah (1680-1758) was a Sufi poet who composed in Punjabi and settled in Kasur, now in Pakistan. His Spiritual Master was Shah Inayat. The poetic form Bulleh Shah used is called the Kafi, a style of Punjabi poetry used not only by the Sufis of Sindh and Punjab, but also by Sikh gurus. Nur 'Ali Shah (1760-1796). The 36th Qutub or Perfect Master or 'Pole' of the Ni'matullah Sufi Order was born in Isfahan. The Ulama of Kirmansh 'Ali Bihbahani who was nick-named 'the Sufi killer' saw the Sufi Poet Nur 'Ali Shah as a threat and he was poisoned. Book excerpt: THE ROYAL SUFI POETS OF MUGHAL INDIABabur, Humayan, Kamran, Akbar, Qutub Shah,Jahangir, Dara Shikoh, Makhfi & Zafar.SELECTED POEMSTranslation & Introduction Paul SmithThe Mughal Empire was an imperial power in South Asia that ruled a large portion of the Indian subcontinent. It began in 1526, invaded and ruled most of India by the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and ended in the mid-19th century. Babur, the first 'Mughal' emperor (who wrote some poetry influenced by Sufism) learned about the riches of Hindustan and conquest of it by his ancestor, Timurlane, in 1503 at Dikh-Kat, a place in the Transoxiana region. Babur's son Humayun (another who composed Sufi-influenced poetry) succeeded him in 1530. The 'classic period' of the Empire started in 1556 with the accession of Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, better known as Akbar the Great. It ended with the death of the last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, both Sufis and poets. The prince and ruler of Golconda Qutub Shah (1565-1611) who built the city of Hyderabad was a great Sufi poet as were Prince Dara Shikoh who composed books on Vedanta and Sufism before his fundamentalist younger brother Aurangzeb had him killed. He was greatly loved by his niece Princess Zeb-un-Nissa, the poetess 'Makhfi', and was a profound influence on her becoming a Sufi and a wonderful poet. She spent many years jailed by her father. Other poets include Prince Kamran and Emperor Jahangir. Introduction: The Mughal Empire, Sufis & Dervishes: Their Art and Use of Poetry, The Main Forms in Persian & Urdu Poetry of Mughal India.
