Many urban souls feel the stirrings of spirituality but don’t have the tools they need to create deeper, more meaningful connections—with themselves and with the world around them. Urban Soul Warrior is an interactive book about living an extraordinary and powerful life, becoming aware of the miraculous state of existence we live in, and using that awareness to live fully, completely, and magnificently. Both a workbook and a sacred space for writing, the book provides simple and effective insights, advice, and creative exercises that are designed to infuse readers’ lives with rich meaning and beauty. Ultimately, the guide works to empower readers to become active participants in the conscious mapping of their own inner journeys. Written in an urban voice, its ancient and modern concepts are intertwined to familiarize readers with techniques to effectively chart the course of the experiences they desire.

Book excerpt: Luke is sure his martial arts training is worthless. That's why he quit. But when Dirk and his thugs move into his school, Luke quickly realizes that he may be the only one who can save Lucy, Chuck, and his other friends from their relentless and violent gang. Only Luke can make the ultimate decision to help his friends and stand up to the gang. It's a stark choice, and one he can't make alone. "A Warrior's Soul" is Luke's journey as he struggles to cope with the gang, teachers who don't understand the threat, disbelieving parents, and his own lack of confidence. Will he have the courage to return to the dojo and resume his training? Will he have the wisdom to know when to confront the gang? About the Author SR Staley travels internationally, giving speeches and presentations on a wide range of topics. He is married with two teenage children, and is also the author of the young adult novel "The Pirate of Panther Bay." He currently splits his time between Dayton, Ohio, where he trains at the SKH Quest Center for Martial Arts, and Tallahassee, Florida, where he teaches at Florida State University. Endorsement "Staley's gritty and gripping story brings to life the kind of dilemmas today's kids can face on a daily basis. He also provides important lessons for how martial arts training can become a touchstone in finding our way through life. Bullying is a dirty blight in our society, and Luke's story doesn't shy away from the threats they pose to boys and girls, and the adults in their lives. I enjoyed reading the martial arts action scenes, which are believably intense. As founder of the To-Shin Do martial art, based on Japan's historical ninja defensive combat principles and techniques, I am personally excited to see "A Warrior's Soul" illuminate the impact of modern-day bullying, martial arts, and personal growth." -- Stephen K. Hayes, Black Belt Hall of Fame, Founder, To-Shin Do Martial Arts

Book excerpt: I am a member of Christian Stronghold Church, located at 4701 Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia, where Dr. Willie Richardson is Senior Pastor and Pastor Christopher Bell Sr. is Assistant Pastor. I crossed over from darkness to light on January 22, 1975, in Atlanta, Georgia. I have been walking the streets of many of our major cities for over forty years, sharing the gospel with primarily young black men. Inside the pages of this book, I share with you much of the statistics and data on the condition of the black man of America. I believe there are many factors involved in shaping him into the condition he is in today. The findings and experience I have undergone don't speak to the condition of all black men, but rather to those who were left fatherless and raised by a single parent or grandparents. Covered also is the gross disparity of the justice system, mass incarceration of black men, why black men are attracted to the Islamic religion, and the failed educational system, which all in many ways contributed to the condition of the fatherless men. I have a deep passion in my soul to help these young men see through the hearing of gospel. They can be delivered from the power of darkness into the kingdom of God (Acts 26:18). In most of the ministries that I serve in, my church consists of working with young problematic men. I teach evangelism in our church institute, teach in drug and alcohol rehabilitation houses, prison ministries, and am leader of a team of men called Urban Soul Warriors, a ministry that goes out in the nighttime hours, reaching out to drug addicts and dealers. We focus our ministry work primarily in the hood, which I consider the most neglected mission field in America.

The book provides close readings of cultural formations as diverse as Shakespearean drama, the Statue of Liberty, contemporary plays by women, African-American performance, and feminist interventions in video, performance and installation. The texts discussed include: * installations by Mary Kelly and Dawn Dedeaux, * plays by Ntozake Shange, Rochelle Owens, Adrienne Kennedy, Marsha Norman and Amiri Baraka * performances by Robbie McCauley, Jordan, Orlan, and Carmelita Tropicana * stage, film and video productions of King Lear, Othello, Romeo and Juliet and All's Well that Ends Well.

When threatening e-mails result in danger, the fiery sparks between Piper and Grey grow scorching hot. They must defend the throne from a deadly invisible attacker, but will their raging desire keep them together . . . or will their burning suspicions tear them apart?

Starita successfully balances the many facts with vivid narrative passages that put the reader inside the very thoughts and emotions of La Flesche." —Chicago Tribune On March 14, 1889, Susan La Flesche Picotte received her medical degree—becoming the first Native American doctor in U.S. history. She earned her degree thirty-one years before women could vote and thirty-five years before Indians could become citizens in their own country. By age twenty-six, this fragile but indomitable Native woman became the doctor to her tribe. Overnight, she acquired 1,244 patients scattered across 1,350 square miles of rolling countryside with few roads. Her patients often were desperately poor and desperately sick—tuberculosis, small pox, measles, influenza—families scattered miles apart, whose last hope was a young woman who spoke their language and knew their customs. This is the story of an Indian woman who effectively became the chief of an entrenched patriarchal tribe, the story of a woman who crashed through thick walls of ethnic, racial and gender prejudice, then spent the rest of her life using a unique bicultural identity to improve the lot of her people—physically, emotionally, politically, and spiritually. Joe Starita's A Warrior of the People is the moving biography of Susan La Flesche Picotte’s inspirational life and dedication to public health, and it will finally shine a light on her numerous accomplishments.

Book excerpt: THE FIRST PSY/CHANGELING NOVEL from the New York Times bestselling author of Shards of Hope, Shield of Winter, and Heart of Obsidian... The book that Christine Feehan called "a must-read for all of my fans." In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation”—the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion—and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities—or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…
