Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of the urban government system in Bangladesh, focusing on its upper tier, the City Corporation (CC), and the institutional and legal frameworks within which it operates. Along with a discussion of the scale and magnitude of urbanization, the book presents a comprehensive analysis of the reform agendas of CCs including their functional assignments, local political leadership, local control over administration and service delivery, local fiscal autonomy and local financial management, and local participation and accountability mechanisms. Very few efforts have been taken to analyze the comprehensive reform agenda required to make the CCs effectively discharge their duties and responsibilities in the context of Bangladesh. This book therefore not only fills this gap in the literature, but also provides recommendations on each reform agenda.

This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the key livelihood and governance challenges that the urban poor experience while navigating public spaces in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Using data collected through extensive fieldwork in Bangladesh, the book contributes to the emerging scholarship of resilient cities, gendered space, spatial justice, and poverty in cities of the Global South. The book assesses the everyday politics of survival for the urban poor; how the poor negotiate different levels of formal and informal modes of power and governance; and the dynamics of gender. It explores how tenuous counter-spaces are created when these factors combine to provide a valuable framework for work in other urban contexts in the Global South beyond Bangladesh. Using cross-disciplinary perspectives, this book investigates the issues of human development, urban governance, urban planning and the gendered nature of urban space to outline how these issues enable or constrain poor people’s livelihood practices and their rights to be in the city. Exploring debates surrounding placemaking and inclusive cities and their connection to poor people’s livelihoods, this book will be of interest to scholars in the field of Sociology, Development Studies, Planning, Geography and Anthropology.

Book Synopsis State, Market and Society in an Emerging Economy by : Quamrul Alam
Download or read book State, Market and Society in an Emerging Economy written by Quamrul Alam and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic and social development that Bangladesh has achieved in the past two decades has made Bangladesh a development paradox. This book tries to explain this paradox through a political economy lens. The book explains the linkages between the state, changing society and emerging private sector, and examines whether the social transformation taking place in Bangladesh has the potential to live up to the expectations of a middle- income country. The early part of the book unravels the myriad relations between the state, society and market to project the aspirations of a newly independent nation. It analyzes how political turmoil, militarization of politics, politicization of institutions, reforms initiatives, industrial and social development policies, and the power nexus influenced the nature of the political economy of Bangladesh. The book goes on to examine how domestic appetite for capital and raw materials, the digital revolution, and the capacity of the local market to absorb expanded economic activities have created an environment that catalyzes innovation and entrepreneurship. The book also explains how the country has attempted to transform from an agrarian to a manufacturing- based economy, with rapid growth in the ready- made garment industry, pisciculture, pharmaceuticals and the ICT sector. Bangladesh’s journey from an emerging economy towards a developed country would interest those researching on development economics and those in policy making.
Book Synopsis Informal Services in Asian Cities by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Informal Services in Asian Cities written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While supporting the livelihoods of most of the developing world’s urban poor, the informal sector also deprives them of basic services and social protection. Rendered vulnerable to socioeconomic threats, people in the urban informal sector have suffered disproportionately during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and face a highly uncertain future. Informal Services in Asian Cities explores informality’s forms and constraints. It describes the pandemic’s effects on the informal sector and how leveraging informal services can enable urban resilience. Drawing on interdisciplinary research, the book illustrates the transformative potential of urban planning and governance that addresses informality. It also details measures that could boost the informal sector’s inclusive and sustainable growth potential.
Book Synopsis Urban Informalities by : Michael Waibel
Download or read book Urban Informalities written by Michael Waibel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together an interdisciplinary and international group of researchers working on a wide variety of cities throughout Asia, Latin America and Europe, this book addresses, rethinks and, in some cases, abandons the notions of formal and informal urbanism. This collection critically interrogates both the ways in which 'informal' and 'formal' are put to work in the governing and politicisation of cities, and their conceptual strengths and weaknesses. It does so by focusing on a wide variety of topics, from specific forms of housing and labour often traditionally linked to the formal/informal divide, to urban political negotiations, cultural practices, and ways of being in the city. The book takes stock of and reflects on how contemporary urban informality/formality relations are being produced and are/might be understood, and puts forward an enlarged and comprehensive understanding of urban informality.

Book Synopsis Health in Megacities and Urban Areas by : Alexander Krämer
Download or read book Health in Megacities and Urban Areas written by Alexander Krämer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diverse driving forces, processes and actors are responsible for different trends in the development of megacities and large urban areas. Under the dynamics of global change, megacities are themselves changing: On the one hand they are prone to increasing socio-economic vulnerability due to pronounced poverty, socio-spatial and political fragmentation, sometimes with extreme forms of segregation, disparities and conflicts. On the other hand megacities offer positive potential for global transformation, e.g. minimisation of space consumption, highly effective use of resources, efficient disaster prevention and health care options – if good strategies were developed. At present in many megacities and urban areas of the developing world and the emerging economies the quality of life is eroding. Most of the megacities have grown to unprecedented size, and the pace of urbanisation has far exceeded the growth of the necessary infrastructure and services. As a result, an increasing number of urban dwellers are left without access to basic amenities like clean drinking water, fresh air and safe food. Additionally, social inequalities lead to subsequent and significant intra-urban health inequalities and unbalanced disease burdens that can trigger conflict and violence between subpopulations. The guiding idea of our book lies in a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to the complex topic of megacities and urban health that can only be adequately understood when different disciplines share their knowledge and methodological tools to work together. We hope that the book will allow readers to deepen their understanding of the complex dynamics of urban and megacity populations through the lens of public health, geographical and other research perspectives.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Partnerships in Sanitary Services Delivery for the Urban Poor in Bangladesh Cities: Governance and Capacity Building Submitted by Mallik Akram Hossain For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy At The University of Hong Kong August 2007 Currently less than 40 percent of the population in Asia is living in urban areas. Projections indicate that more than 50 percent of the Asian people will be living in urban centers by 2030. In South Asia, the surge of urban population has also been very high. One of the major sources of this unfettered urban population growth is rural-urban migration. One consequence of this rapid urbanization is the spontaneous growth of informal settlements, with minimal urban services. Inadequate urban services for the urban poor residing in slums and squatters have led to their ill health, lower productivity, reduced incomes and lower quality of life, often termed as the 'brown agenda'. Chronic shortage of sanitary services for the slum poor and their consequent environmental and health impacts are common phenomena in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The prime objective of this research is to find an effective approach through which improved sanitary services can be provided in the slum settlements in the cities of Bangladesh. The slums of two cities: Khluna and Rajshahi were studied. An investigation and field surveys were made to see if partnerships arrangements worked in the socio-political contexts of the two cities. Focusing on the case studies of the two cities, this research argues that urban governance-the relationships between the city government and the civil society- does play an important role in making the variations in partnerships performance. The study finds that the two cities vary in SSD, probably a result of the specific partnerships arrangements. Rajshahi city performs better than Khulna city when measured by two indicators: participation and sense of ownership. The factors that emerge as having an influence on partnerships performance are the capacity of the city governments, leaderships of the people representative and active civil society organizations. This study demonstrates the importance of including the civil society and the local context when the relationships between urban governance and partnerships arrangements are investigated. The study also argues that in improving sanitary conditions in slums, the city authority which lacks the financial resources to provide adequate sanitary facilities should not just rely on donor-driven projects. The capacity of the city authority to facilitate partnership arrangements at the community level is of crucial importance. Leadership of the mayor, capacity to raise local finance, strong sense of ownership and ability of community members to cooperate in the cleaning and maintenance works are important factors in sustaining sanitation services delivery in slums.
