To enrich further the positivity of life, I wish to imbibe the spirit of survival with a poetic line from a poem by Sri Rabindranath Tagore which states, “No one should fear the black cloud in the sky, you all know that there is always the shining Sun behind the cloud.” It is you and only you who is the architect of your own fate. This book is a gift to my grandson, to guide him when he finds himself in tough times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the second half of the twentieth century through today, no family has defined Chicago in the public's eye more than the Daleys. Between Richard J. Daley and his son, Richard M. Daley, a member of this prominent Bridgeport family served as the city's mayor for 43 out of a total 57 years from 1955–2011. When Richard M. Daley, also known as "Richie", made a surprise announcement in 2011 that he would not seek re-election, he had surpassed his father's record tenure of 21 years in office. Daley: A Retrospective explores the fascinating, storied career of Richard M. Daley: the longest-serving, and arguably, most important mayor in the city's own long, storied history. From Richie's childhood in his father's shadow to his infamous teenaged run-in with the law, this book begins with the earliest years in the life of Richard J. Daley's eldest son. It follows the rise of Daley's political career as a state senator and as the state's attorney through his 1989 election as mayor. The bulk of Daley: A Retrospective focuses on Daley's lengthy, imperial reign over Chicago politics, in which he developed his own unique and powerful personality. Transitioning from a perceived simulacrum of his father into one of the most dominant, idiosyncratic, and quotable individuals in American politics, Daley made his name by making bold moves, waging hard-fought battles, and forging commanding, if not celebrated, consensus between the multitudes of citywide officials and organizations. Comprised of 60 years of Chicago Tribune reporting, this story is unique to Chicago and told by none better than the reporters, editors, and notable commentators who covered Daley's entire career. Touching on race relations, education, gang violence, crime, environmentalism, gay marriage, local sports, and the murky world of Chicago politics, Daley: A Retrospective is a captivating read. It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive exploration of Mayor Richard M. Daley's legacy, and it will serve as a significant resource as Daley continues to be reexamined and reevaluated for years to come.

Book excerpt: The brilliance of a master historian shines through this “elegant and engaging memoir” of a lifetime’s work (Richard Aldous, Wall Street Journal). Over a remarkable career Bernard Bailyn has reshaped our understanding of the early American past. Inscribing his superb scholarship with passion and imagination honed by a commitment to rigor, Bailyn captures the particularity of the past and its broad significance in precise, elegant prose. His transformative work has ranged from a new reckoning with the ideology that powered the opposition to British authority in the American Revolution, to a sweeping account of the peopling of America, and the critical nurturing of a new field, the history of the Atlantic world. Illuminating History is the most personal of Bailyn’s works. It is in part an intellectual memoir of the significant turns in an immensely productive and influential scholarly career. It is also alive with people whose actions touched the long arc of history. Among the dramatic human stories that command our attention: a struggling Boston merchant tormented by the tensions between capitalist avarice and a constrictive Puritan piety; an ordinary shopkeeper who in a unique way feverishly condemned British authority as corrupt and unworthy of public confidence; a charismatic German Pietist who founded a cloister in the Pennsylvania wilderness famous for its strange theosophy, its spartan lifestyle, and its rich musical and artistic achievement. And the good townspeople of Petersham, whose response in 1780 to a draft Massachusetts constitution speaks directly to us through a moving insistence on individual freedoms in the face of an imposing central authority. Here is vivid history and an illuminating self-portrait from one of the most eminent historians of our time.

Book excerpt: In this searing, frank and funny memoir, Catherine Simpson describes what it’s been like to live in her woman’s body, and to reach the realisation that all that time she’d spent trying to change her body to conform - often to unattainable standards - could be seen from a completely different perspective. By the time she reached her fifties, Catherine Simpson and her body had gone through a lot together—from period pain and early menopause to shaming and harassment. But there had been success, joy, love, and laughter too: far more freedoms than her mother had, a fulfilling family life and career, and even the promise of further gains for her daughters. So when a cancer diagnosis upends her life, Catherine is forced to reflect on her body, then and now. From growing up on a farm where veterinarians were more common than doctors, and where illness was “a nuisance,” she finds herself faced with the nuisance of a lifetime. One Body is the demystifying, relatable, often hilarious and sometimes hair-raising story of how Catherine navigates her treatment and takes stock of the emotions and reflections it provokes. And how she comes to appreciate the skin she is in—to be grateful for her body and all that it does and is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first comprehensive study of Norwegian humanities education employs systems theory to analyze its transformation from a form of teacher training to its modern status as research-oriented generalist education. Using historical documents and statistical analyses, Vidar Grøtta shows that the expansion of the post-war research system in Norway led to an increase in admissions to humanities education in the 1960s and an ensuing research drift in humanities curricula. Interacting with certain political dynamics and the knowledge economy that has emerged since the 1970s, this research drift resulted in a shift in humanists' career patterns and a transformation of the societal functions of the humanities. The most recent developments in Norwegian humanities education, from 2000 to 2018, are outlined and discussed in the afterword to this volume.
