Book excerpt: To a brain wearied by the din of the city, the clatter of wheels, the jingle of street cars, the discord of bells, the cries of venders, the ear-splitting whistles of factory and shop, how refreshing is the heavenly stillness of the country! To the soul tortured by the sight of ills it cannot cure, wrongs it cannot right, and sufferings it cannot relieve, how blessed to be alone with nature, with trees living free, unfettered lives, and flowers content each in its native spot, with brooks singing of joy and good cheer, with mountains preaching divine peace and rest!

Thus musing one evening, soon after my arrival at a lone farmhouse in the heart of the Green Mountains, I seated myself at the window to make acquaintance with my neighbors. Not the human; I wished for a time to turn away from the world of people, to find rest and recreation in the world outside the walls of houses. My room was a wing lately added to the side of the cottage farthest from the life that went on in it, from the kitchen and dairy, from the sight of barns and henhouses. It was, consequently, as solitary as it could be, and yet retain a slight hold upon humanity. It was connected with the family and farm life by two doors, which I could shut at will, and be alone with nature, and especially with the beloved birds.

Book excerpt: Do not sell the angel with the smeared lips, Granny Flo instructs her friend Rose, as she leaves to buy supplies to make more of the dolls that hung on the tree growing right through the middle of her house in Crystal Springs, Arkansas. Even though its lips are smeared, Granny knows there is something special about this dollsomething in the way her eyes sparkle. But within an hour, the doll is in Tina Dotts car on the way to New York, along with all of Grannys other dolls. Feeling guilty, Tina gives the angel to Lisa, a neighbor girl in a cast, but finds she immediately regrets it. Meanwhile, Lisa develops a special bond with the doll and, finding Granny Flos name on the dolls tag, writes her a letter asking for advice on how to correct the smeared lips. Through their letters, the two become friends. When the doll goes missing, Lisa believes Tina Dott has taken the doll for herself. As she looks for the doll, it becomes clear that the doll seems to change those who come in contact with it for the better. What could make the doll so magical?
Book Synopsis Treetops at Risk by : Margaret Lowman
Download or read book Treetops at Risk written by Margaret Lowman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-22 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest canopies not only support high terrestrial biodiversity but also represent a critical interface between the atmosphere and the earth. They provide goods and services to support diverse human communities and offer opportunities to explore sustainable use of these resources for many generations of local livelihoods. Forest canopies are important carbon sequestration units, and in this sense, serve as climate control for the planet. Canopies are important energy production centers for the planet, and serve as the basis for many food chains. The canopy can also act as a hook for education outreach and conservation, inspiring ecotourism through recreation and other sustainable uses such as treetop walks, zip lines, and birding. Despite these critical services provided by forest canopies, almost no dedicated research in the treetops was initiated until as recently as the late 1970s when single rope techniques were developed by mountaineering professionals and adapted for use in the canopy. Subsequently, an array of canopy access tools was designed in the 1980s and early 1990s that have opened up this “eighth continent” for global exploration and discovery. This volume uses the major findings of the 5th international canopy conference as a platform for organization, but it does not mimic the sessions and presentations of the conference itself. Instead, it builds on the important themes that emerged from the conference and solicits articles that represent future priorities and advancements for canopy science in the next decade. Despite the global efforts of hundreds of forest scientists over the past 3 decades, forests are degrading at an accelerated rate and biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities. Given these trends - despite the very best efforts of the world’s best scientists - other approaches must be taken. This volume summarizes the issue of “treetops at risk” and assembles a global authorship to examine past accomplishments and future initiatives critical in forest conservation.
