Book Synopsis Institutions, Technology and Development in Africa by : Jeffrey James
Download or read book Institutions, Technology and Development in Africa written by Jeffrey James and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive literature has demonstrated that technologies in sub-Saharan Africa are largely inappropriate: that is, that they are typically capital- and import-intensive rather than labour- and local input-intensive. These technologies have created a pattern of development that is highly unequal, with widespread unemployment and under-employment. In this literature, however, relatively little attention has been paid to the institutions that govern the generation, adoption and use of technology. This book draws on historical analysis and case studies to evaluate how institutions in different countries, including those in Africa itself, generate technologies that vary in their characteristics and suitability for the region. Through these case studies, insight is gained into the characteristics of ‘appropriate’ institutions that might underlie a more balanced pattern of technology and development than currently exists. The findings of the book clearly confirm a major tenet of institutionalist theory: namely, that institutions developed in one set of circumstances are unlikely to be appropriate to conditions in a markedly different set. This book will be of interest to economists, social historians and anyone with an interest in modern African development.

In this wide-ranging book, Hannah Reid offers a rich compendium of real life scenarios and brings home the realities of how poor people are suffering from and coping with climate change impacts today. Drawing on case studies gathered by the UP in Smoke group - a powerful coalition of global environment and development organizations including Greenpeace, Oxfam, Practical Action and the WWF - this book provides new models for human development in a climate-change-constrained future as well as positive solutions to tackling climate change at the macro-level with proposals from luminaries such as Professors Wangari Maathai, Manfred Max-Neef and Jayati Ghosh.

Book Synopsis Knowledge Systems of Societies for Adaptation and Mitigation of Impacts of Climate Change by : Sunil Nautiyal
Download or read book Knowledge Systems of Societies for Adaptation and Mitigation of Impacts of Climate Change written by Sunil Nautiyal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is broadly recognized as a key environmental issue affecting social and ecological systems worldwide. At the Cancun summit of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 16th Conference, the parties jointly agreed that the vulnerable groups particularly in developing countries and whose livelihood is based on land use practices are the most common victims as in most cases their activities are shaped by the climate. Therefore, solving the climate dilemma through mitigation processes and scientific research is an ethical concern. Thus combining the knowledge systems of the societies and scientific evidences can greatly assist in the creation of coping mechanisms for sustainable development in a situation of changing climate. International Humboldt Kolleg focusing on “knowledge systems of societies and Climate Change” was organized at ISEC. This event was of unique importance, as the year 2011-12 was celebrated as the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between India and Germany with the motto "Germany and India - Infinite Opportunities." This volume is the outcome of the papers presented during the IHK 2011 at ISEC, India.
