Book excerpt: Excerpt from Up and Down the London Streets As we had the honour to be born within the sound of Bow bells, a fellow-citizen of Sir Thomas More, John Milton, Alexander Pope, and Johnny Gilpin, we have, e'en from our boyish days, ' taken pleasure to seek in books and odd places the story of Old London City; and having come to the belief that what has had for us so many attrae tions might possibly be made to interest others, we have compiled the following pages; and we desire it to be understood, that we only ask recog nition for our industry, and not commendation for any original discoveries. We have freely gleaned from antiquaries, poets, historians, and compilers who have preceded us, thereby creating, mayhap, a desire for more knowledge of the old City. Book Synopsis Down and Out in Paris and London by : George Orwell
Download or read book Down and Out in Paris and London written by George Orwell and published by A G Printing & Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were eccentric characters in the hotel. The Paris slums are a gathering-place for eccentric people—people who have fallen into solitary, half-mad grooves of life and given up trying to be normal or decent. Poverty frees them from ordinary standards of behaviour, just as money frees people from work. Some of the lodgers in our hotel lived lives that were curious beyond words. There were the Rougiers, for instance, an old, ragged, dwarfish couple who plied an extraordinary trade. They used to sell postcards on the Boulevard St Michel. The curious thing was that the postcards were sold in sealed packets as pornographic ones, but were actually photographs of chateaux on the Loire; the buyers did not discover this till too late, and of course never complained. The Rougiers earned about a hundred francs a week, and by strict economy managed to be always half starved and half drunk. The filth of their room was such that one could smell it on the floor below. According to Madame F., neither of the Rougiers had taken off their clothes for four years.

Download or read book Down and Out in Paris and London written by George Orwell and published by Modernista. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through George Orwell's firsthand accounts, readers are exposed to the harsh realities of life as a member of the destitute underclass. Orwell works various menial jobs, as dishwasher and plongeur in Parisian restaurants, and encounters a cast of characters from all walks of life. These include fellow down-and-outs, as well as the exploitative and indifferent employers and landlords who profit from their desperation. Down and Out in Paris and London sheds light on the daily challenges faced by those living in poverty, from the constant struggle to secure food and shelter to the lack of dignity and respect afforded to the working poor. Orwell's experiences also serve as a critique of societal structures and attitudes that perpetuate poverty and inequality, offering insight into the systemic failures that marginalize and oppress the most vulnerable members of society. GEORGE ORWELL was born in India in 1903 and passed away in London in 1950. As a journalist, critic, and author, he was a sharp commentator on his era and its political conditions and consequences.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round London: Down East and Up West IT was the intention of the author of this book to add to it, by way of preface, a few lines of assurance to its readers that every story and every incident contained in it is based upon actual fact, and that only so much disguise has been anywhere assumed as was absolutely necessitated by the exigencies of publication. Un happily, the severe illness against which Montagu Williams has been struggling with so much courage and fortitude for so long a time prostrated him immediately after the last sketch was written, and he was consequently unable to do anything with regard to the little preface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unnoticed London Bond Street, because they are obsessed by the idea that to see London requires some occult store of knowledge and energy, and their eyes are sealed to the interest and beauty that lie around their path. Finally there are people like the old lady who, when she heard I was writing a book about old London, asked with astonishment, Is there anything old left in London? I hasten to add that I have not tried in the following pages to tell of every interesting place or even of all there is of interest in the places visited, - only enough, I hope, to make people go and see for themselves and have the pleasure of discovering the rest. I am not afraid that if they once go to the Chapter House they will miss any of its beauties: my dread is lest they fail to go there, from the vision of a plethora of things they think they have no time to see. For I want more than anything else to prick the curiosity of the travellers up and down the streets of the city who miss so much pleasure that they might have so easily, because they are not alive to all the interesting and un expected things that wait for their coming just round the corner.
