Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Apocalyptic' is a key concept for 20th century interpretation of Paul, embracing several major figures and strands of inquiry. But the category 'apocalyptic' has itself of late come in for scrutiny, which in turn reflects back on 'apocalyptic' interpretation of Paul. This study offers a review of interpretation, ranging beyond Pauline studies to address 'apocalyptic' interpretation generally. Sustained attention to what interpreters are doing with this category, placed alongside what is claimed as being done, reveals a hermeneutical story of considerable interest and wide relevance, which situates the whole interpretive dialogue.
Book Synopsis The Apocalyptic Paul by : Jamie Davies
Download or read book The Apocalyptic Paul written by Jamie Davies and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apocalyptic Paul is rapidly becoming one of the most influential contemporary approaches to the apostle's letters, and one which has generated its share of controversy. Critiques of the movement have come from all sides: Pauline specialists, scholars of Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature, and systematic theologians have all raised critical questions. Meanwhile, many have found it a hard conversation to enter, not least because of the contested nature of its key terms and convictions. Non-specialists can find it difficult to sift through these arguments and to become familiar with the history of this movement, its most important contemporary voices, and its key claims. In the first part of this book, New Testament scholar Jamie Davies offers a retrospective introduction to the conversation, charting its development from the turn of the twentieth century to the present, surveying the contemporary situation. In the second part, Davies explores a more prospective account of the challenges and questions that are likely to energize discussion in the future, before offering some contributions to the apocalyptic reading of Paul through an interdisciplinary conversation between the fields of New Testament scholarship, Second Temple Jewish apocalypticism, and Christian systematic theology.

Book Synopsis Paul Among the Apocalypses? by : J. P. Davies
Download or read book Paul Among the Apocalypses? written by J. P. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant and growing field of discussion in contemporary New Testament studies is the question of 'apocalyptic' thought in Paul. What is often lacking in this discussion, however, is a close comparison of Paul's would-be apocalyptic theology with the Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature of his time, and the worldview that literature expresses. This book addresses that challenge. Covering four key theological themes (epistemology, eschatology, cosmology and soteriology), J. P. Davies places Paul 'among the apocalypses' in order to evaluate recent attempts at outlining an 'apocalyptic' approach to his letters. While affirming much of what those approaches have argued, and agreeing that 'apocalyptic' is a crucial category for an understanding of the apostle, Davies also raises some important questions about the dichotomies which lie at the heart of the 'apocalyptic Paul' movement.
Book Synopsis Paul and the Apocalyptic Imagination by : Ben C. Blackwell
Download or read book Paul and the Apocalyptic Imagination written by Ben C. Blackwell and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-twentieth century, apocalyptic thought has been championed as a central category for understanding the New Testament writings and the letters of Paul above all. But “apocalyptic” has meant different things to different scholars. Even the assertion of an “apocalyptic Paul” has been contested: does it mean the invasive power of God that breaks with the present age (Ernst Käsemann), or the broader scope of revealed heavenly mysteries, including the working out of a “many-staged plan of salvation” (N. T. Wright), or something else altogether? Paul and the Apocalyptic Imagination brings together eminent Pauline scholars from diverse perspectives, along with experts of Second Temple Judaism, Hellenistic philosophy, patristics, and modern theology, to explore the contours of the current debate. Contributors discuss the history of what apocalypticism, and an “apocalyptic Paul,” have meant at different times and for different interpreters; examine different aspects of Paul’s thought and practice to test the usefulness of the category; and show how different implicit understandings of apocalypticism shape different contemporary presentations of Paul’s significance.

Book excerpt: Romans 5-8 revolve around God's dramatic cosmic activity and its implications for humanity and all of creation. Apocalyptic Paul measures the power of Paul's rhetoric about the relationship of cosmic power to the Law, interpretations of righteousness and the self, and the link between grace and obedience. A revealing study of Paul's understanding of humanity in light of God's apocalyptic action through Jesus Christ, Apocalyptic Paul illuminates Romans 5-8 and shows how critical this neglected part of Romans was to Paul's literary project.

Book Synopsis Paul, Theologian of God's Apocalypse by : Martinus C. de Boer
Download or read book Paul, Theologian of God's Apocalypse written by Martinus C. de Boer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays argues that Paul’s articulation of Christ and his saving work makes use of the categories and perspectives of ancient Jewish apocalyptic eschatology. Such eschatology is concerned with the expectation that God will finally and irrevocably put an end to the present order of reality (“this age”) and replace it with a new, transformed order of reality (“the age to come”). In Paul’s view, God has initiated this eschatological act of cosmic rectification in the person and work of Christ. The essays included, two of them previously unpublished, investigate and illuminate various aspects of Paul’s christologically focused appropriation of ancient Jewish apocalyptic eschatology, particularly in his letters to the Galatians and the Romans. The collection begins with the author’s seminal essay on the two tracks of Jewish apocalyptic eschatology (forensic and cosmological) from 1989 and ends with an essay from 2016 containing the author’s retrospective restatement and elaboration of his views.

Book Synopsis The Jewish Apocalyptic Tradition and the Shaping of New Testament Thought by : Benjamin E. Reynolds
Download or read book The Jewish Apocalyptic Tradition and the Shaping of New Testament Thought written by Benjamin E. Reynolds and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary study of Jewish apocalypticism today recognizes the wealth and diversity of ancient traditions concerned with the “unveiling” of heavenly matters‒‒understood to involve revealed wisdom, the revealed resolution of time, and revealed cosmology‒‒in marked contrast to an earlier focus on eschatology as such. The shift in focus has had a more direct impact on the study of ancient “pseudepigraphic” literature, however, than in New Testament studies, where the narrower focus on eschatological expectation remains dominant. In this Companion, an international team of scholars draws out the implications of the newest scholarship for the variety of New Testament writings. Each entry presses the boundaries of current discussion regarding the nature of apocalypticism in application to a particular New Testament author. The cumulative effect is to reveal, as never before, early Christianity, its Christology, cosmology, and eschatology, as expressions of tendencies in Second Temple Judaism.
Download or read book Paul written by J. Christiaan Beker and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two main schools of thought organize the field of play for Paul - apocalyptic and narrative. Apocalyptic, rooted in Second Temple mystical Judaism, emphasizes the disjunctive. Both the cross and resurrection are read as cosmic commentary on abolishment of all and the advent of the brand new. Narrative, rooted in the Old Testament's covenant promises, emphasizes continuity. The cross and resurrection are read inside covenant to show fulfillment. Here, in one volume of two acclaimed Pauline scholars - J. Christaan Beker and N. T. Wright - the difference becomes evident. While agreeing the cross and resurrection Jesus stand at the very center of Paul's theological enterprise, they disagree as to how to interpret the death and resurrection: as apocalyptic or as covenant fulfillment. Let the debate begin.
Book Synopsis Apocalypse as Holy War by : Emma Wasserman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reassessment of early Christian apocalypticism arguing that the texts are not so much myths about good versus evil as about divine politics and heroic submission Prevailing theories of apocalypticism assert that in a world that rebels against God, a cataclysmic battle between good and evil is needed to reassert God's dominion. Emma Wasserman, a rising scholar of early Christian history, challenges this interpretation and reframes these apocalyptic texts as myths about divine politics and heroic submission. A major scholarly contribution that ranges across Mediterranean and West Asian religious thought, this volume rethinks Paul's Christ-myth as well as his most distinctive ethical teachings.

Book Synopsis The 'Apocalyptic' Paul by : David A. Shaw
Download or read book The 'Apocalyptic' Paul written by David A. Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common critique of the so-called 'apocalyptic' reading of Paul has been terminological in nature, since the term is taken to imply a relationship to Jewish apocalypses. Yet advocates of the apocalyptic Paul use the term to signal a connection to an interpretive genealogy - primarily descended from Ernst Kasemann and J. Louis Martyn - and to affirm a set of theological convictions in relation to Paul's gospel. This invites a different engagement with the apocalyptic reading of Paul, leaving aside questions of nomenclature to explore those genealogical claims, and to examine how well those theological convictions are grounded in Paul. Therefore, David A. Shaw analyses contemporary accounts of the apocalyptic Paul in relation to the interpretive tradition with which they identify, and in relation to Romans 5-8, which has become the locus classicus of apocalyptic readings of Paul.

Book Synopsis Living in the Flesh by the Spirit by : Brian H. Thomas
Download or read book Living in the Flesh by the Spirit written by Brian H. Thomas and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Paul mean by "the flesh"? There is a great deal of confusion among laymen and disagreement among scholars on this issue. Christians know that we are supposed to "walk by the Spirit" so that they will not gratify the desires of the flesh, but it is not entirely clear what these expressions mean. Furthermore, Paul can also be confusing when he addresses the Christian's relationship to the flesh--are we in the flesh or not? This book clarifies these issues for us by exploring the different meanings of "flesh" throughout the Bible, and analyzing the influence both of Old Testament conceptions of "flesh" as well as new salvation-historical realities on Paul's thinking, especially in the context of the controversy over circumcision in Galatians. By carefully following Paul's thought, we will also gain greater insight into other Pauline themes that intersect with his theology of the flesh: new creation and his view of this age and the one to come. Most importantly, we will discover Paul's own program for our spiritual transformation so that we may live a life of Christlike love and service despite the moral weakness of our flesh.
