Der Mittelstand ist Arbeitgeber und Berufsausbilder Nummer eins in Deutschland. Über 99 Prozent aller Unternehmen in Deutschland weisen mittelständische Wesensmerkmale auf. Aufgrund dieser immensen Bedeutung für die deutsche Volkswirtschaft lässt sich erahnen wie wichtig finanziell gesunde mittelständische Unternehmen sind. Mittelständische Unternehmen haben sich in den vergangenen 60 Jahren als Entwickler neuer Produkte sowie als Nischenbesetzer und Revolutionäre in ihrer jeweiligen Branche ausgezeichnet. Was jedoch vielfach vergessen wurde, war die Auseinandersetzung mit der unternehmenseigenen Finanzierung. Es wurden oftmals Investitionsentscheidungen getroffen ohne eine gesicherte und substantielle Finanzierung. Dies ist grundsätzlich als betriebswirtschaftlich unvernünftig anzusehen. Ausgangspunkt dieser Arbeit ist die These, dass die Schwierigkeiten bei der Finanzierung einer Unternehmung in erster Linie aus einem Fehlverhalten der Unternehmensführung resultieren. Folglich ist die erschwerte Kapitalbeschaffung Ergebnis dieser Fehlleistung. Diese Arbeit setzt sich mit den Ursachen für diese Schwierigkeiten, den Auswirkungen auf die Kapitalbeschaffung und möglichen Lösungsansätzen auseinander. Dass die Lösung der Finanzierungsprobleme ein Wettbewerbsvorteil in umkämpften Märkten sein kann, soll diese Arbeit belegen. Zudem soll sie den Sinn für die Lösung dieser Probleme schärfen.
